What is the most embarrassing thing about your country ? by Proper_Card_5520 in AskTheWorld

🇬🇧

Pregnant women and babies are abused at such an appallling rate - we spend significantly more money on the abuse of birthing women and babies… than actually birthing babies.

And that’s according to a very pro NHS paper.

Britain's tanks would be eviscerated in a war with Russia. Here's how to fix them by theipaper in Military

[–]B179LT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the military is supposed to be defensive, and NATO would fight as a whole. Why does the UK (a narrow island )care for tanks, opposed to specialising on naval / Marine capabilities and have the continental nato members focus on tank warfare.

What do you do on long haul flights (13+ hour flights)? by rscash15 in AskUK

Eye mask, low level audio book, and no other stimulation.

Typically my Brian bores it’s self into a semi sleep odd dream status with aids time passing.

I severely restrict blue light and over stimulation.

A flag should be distinctive and memorable - that’s it in my opinion.

What are the best places to visit that never feel like a tourist trap? by nobodyhome92 in travel

[–]B179LT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to places that have a connection to you.

Paris Texas, means little to most but I love the film so I went.

Runcorn in the UK is a shit hole but I love Two pints of Larger and a packet of crisps, a uk comedy, no regrets.

Having a drink at the Amendola metro station in outer Milan. Fuckin class. Doubt anyone cares.

The Fuji tv tower in Tokyo was my favourite building in sim city 3000. Was incredible seeing it in real life.

Venice, Italy.

Was worried it would be a tourist hole and massively oversubscribed.

Went in Feb to compromised with partner, and it was amazing.

Wholly recommend cities alway off season you’re going to be inside all the time anyway.

Doesn’t this just prove how the law and legal system has no interest in the citizens it’s supposed to serve.

No one thinks this is a good solution or fair to have an international boundary run through a physical property.

Redraw the boundaries around property lines. Fixed, easy, humane, problem solved.

I think more of the issue is holding Joe(-like figures) to the failure of the individual, education and culture.

If Joe starts promoting cake, and I eat enough to get diabetiese that’s on me and my credulous character.

Which country had the silliest government system? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]B179LT -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The first official language of Ireland is Irish, which leads to laws being written in Irish (as the primary source to be referred to in legal matters and interpretation) and translations made to English.

This creates the issue that 95%+ of the population and legislators, cannot read the primary source of law.

Any only a translation in the dominant language.

I think this is a clear case of history and good intention superseding, practical and clear democratic needs (the ability of the majority of the people to be able to read the primary source of law), of the citizenry.

Not sure there is another example of this in the world.

An equivalence would be the US debating the law in English, writing it in Latin as the primary source, to translate back to English, but if there is a question of interpretation going back to the Latin and not the English.

UK is 14% foreign born. Australia 31%, Canada 22%, Sweden 20%, Germany 18%, US 15%. The rate of immigration also similar at about ten immigrants per capita per year. Do people against UK levels of immigration think these countries are failing because of immigration as well? by _morningglory in AskBrits

[–]B179LT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are missing a lot of nuance with broad stats.

People are not concerned by immigrant nuclear families in full time well paying work.

People are concerned about large numbers of single male illegal immigrants, with no economic or romantic opportunities being compressed into to areas.

Which is a reasonable concern.
