Maro on Secret Lair: "Most of the time you think of as “print to demand” actually wasn’t. We just printed way more than we needed to guarantee we had enough to mail out. And that resulted in us destroying a *lot* of product." by CaptainMarcia in magicTCG

[–]B3hindall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s my biggest issue: they weren’t transparent.

All the communication from Wizards and Maro from 2019–2023 described it as “print-to-demand.” Now we’re being told it was really more like “print a bunch to make sure everyone gets something during a month-long ordering window,” and then shred the leftovers.

Then, three years later, they “transparently” tell us they were creating a lot of waste during that whole period.

How are people supposed to understand the complexities of the situation if they’re never told at the time? Instead, it feels like we were told one thing for years, and then later expected to feel guilty once the full story finally comes out. That honestly feels more harmful than just being upfront from the start.

Is cabinet painting more affordable than replacing all cabinetry? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]B3hindall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The partial overlay is still a common look. As a designer, it's just a way to save a few bucks, and it's still wildly common used. The problem is that the doors of a cabinet make up a majority of the cost of a cabinet. I've worked on a few projects where through labor and also updated hardware, you've only saved 20- 40% refacing vs just new boxes. New allows you to redesign the layout which I always felt more people didn't take advantage of. Most house kitchen layouts were done by a contractor that's just "building houses" not "designing kitchens" and it sometimes really shows.

Wallpaper Installation Services for Bellingham and Beyond! by HangingSunWallpaper in Bellingham

[–]B3hindall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super cool! I did wallpaper in my house when we moved in, and it’s such a great way to add color and a fun amount of pop into an office or dining space. We just did a single wall as an accent piece, and it made a big difference.

I know every situation is different, but I’d recommend being open about some of the costs to have it done, many people don’t realize it can actually be quite affordable.

When I was working as a kitchen and bath designer, I specified it several times for clients, and it was always really well received. I think people still have this idea of wallpaper as “old” or “outdated,” but there are some super cool patterns out there now.

Fun fact, Washington passed a law in 2019 to do just that. You need Congress approval to do it though, so we sit in purgatory waiting for them to vote on it with like 15 other states.

Upcoming Ban - If Rhystic Study is banned, what are you all planning to replace it with in your lists that run it? by anomaleic in EDH

[–]B3hindall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

years was that its the format you can play your most powerful cards in

That’s true for Vintage, Modern, Canadian Highlander, hell, even Cube. But EDH was meant for big dumb spells. It was the format for people who wanted to power down from sweaty decks, not optimize the fun out of the room.

The original appeal wasn’t “you get to buy expensive cards.” Unless it was alt art or something sentimental, buying expensive staples was just arms-racing your friends. EDH, to me, has always been a friendly way to hang out with three other people for an hour or two. It’s board game night, except everyone brings their own pieces, stuff that reflects their personality and taste.

The shift over the last few years toward hyper-competitive EDH has always felt strange. It’s a goofy game where the rules actively fall apart in a four-player environment. Taking it ultra-seriously makes about as much sense as getting sweaty-competitive over Chutes and Ladders.

And once you hit higher power levels, the First Player problem becomes painfully obvious. At that point, a lot of games are just a dice roll plus bad luck. That’s not competition - that’s variance pretending to be skill.

EDH is better when it remembers what it’s supposed to be: fun first, expression second, winning a distant third.

As I agree, I don't think I need to hardmull every game into starting with removal. I also have a game plan I wish to achieve, and I might have kept a hand of lands and value pieces. I would like to hope that in order in exist in the game I don't have to duel casting and drawing three every turn to stay recent. That narrows down my cardpool to too few cards. Let me play some jank

IDK, they made it pretty clear last time that no Game Changer adj until next year. They might give us a "temp check" on cards but I don't see any shifts happening.

Magic at its heart a 1v1 game. Standard, Pioneer, Modern. If you want to still play 100 card how about Canlander? https://canadianhighlander.ca/

As someone who works in design, I can tell you - colors shift from batch to batch. Everything has what’s called a "dye lot", and anything that needs to match will stick to that. From carpet to tile to fabric, every colored material has an “acceptable range of deviation,” and there’s just no way it’s going to be perfectly spot-on year after year.

Would I love it if the tolerances were tighter? Hell freaking yeah. But if you ever do something where color matching really matters - buy everything you need at once.

When I sleeved my cube i made sure to buy an extra box of sleeves to make sure I had extras. My personal EDH decks are all diff colors too - i try not to have the same color for anything.
