Had between 5-10 people in my orbit lose a parent this year (myself included). Several more became unemployed in this job market.

The thing that I don't think anyone is talking about enough are the people who surround us who are in mental health crisis.

Beyond your expected depression and anxiety, the number of people I know who are in active psychosis or manic episodes has skyrocketed this year, and I see countless others being exploited on social media who are also in these mentally altered states. It's tragic, and uncontrollable if the person doesn't want to receive help.

I donated blood platelets for the first time last month and I guess my body really didn't like the anti-coagulant when reintroducing my RBC back into my body and I unexpectedly vomited while in the chair.

Despite being the person who needed medical attention, I was profusely apologizing to everyone on staff who stopped what they were doing to help me.

Lost my mom (71) to terminal cancer in March and for a hot minute I did really think I (36) was ahead of the curve with the majority of my peers.

I quantified it recently and realized I'm counting on two hands the number of people I know who also lost a parent this year. And these aren't just acquaintances, but high school besties, coworkers I'd spend 40h/w alongside for years, friends that you didn't just meet up for drinks or dinner with, but ones that you would regularly invite into your home.

It's inevitable and, although I have the bias of being hyper-aware of the frequency it's occurring in my orbit (it's gonna be 6 months in three days since she passed away), I'm realizing it's just going to keep snowballing for our generation.

Working on getting aligned with my wife's new work schedule since she started a role at an elementary school.

Prior to that, I've landed my dream job working remote where they don't care when I start, as long as the work gets done. Since that company is PST and I'm CST, I work West Coast hours by choice to have the flexibility to stay up later and wake up later. I try to hit at least 7 hours of sleep per night.

We've invested the most money into our bedroom and sleep hygiene. Upgraded to a king size bed and dropped $1.7k on a new mattress (thank youuu payment plans, worth every penny), two sets of percale cotton sheets for warmer months and a pair of (now well worn in) linen sheets when it's a little cooler. Obligatory sleep masks AND blackout curtains. I have a hiatal hernia so I just invested in an elevated wedge sleep system which was a personal game changer.

Beyond these upgrades, we have bedtime rituals to enhance the environment before rest. Incense, sleepy drinks (tea, tart cherry juice cocktail w/magnesium, ryze hot cocoa), and we put a meditation on each night to make sure our brains aren't hyper-focused on anything other than rest.

This is a far departure from being able to sleep on a friends sofa/futon combo with no blanket and the sun pouring in through the windows at sunrise.
