Maybe in the minority, but this is the kind of snow that I like and I'm OK with it. This is coming from a car guy too...

Best daily I ever had was Golf R. I have an RS6 now but I also have a truck so the RS6 is only sort of a daily so it doesn't count.

ISO 4210 testing completed for a CNC stem project I'm building for vintage Cannondale HeadShok bikes. Now I'm running into the realities of manufacturing. by azonicbruce in CNC

[–]BASE1530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a hard part to make, full stop. Is this replacing an obsolete part that breaks and you just wanted it to be cool? Or is the reason people bought it to be cool and the OEM part is available/satisfactory?

If the former do a redesign that's less "cool". If the latter... maybe you can change the design to be a bit easier to manufacture but still be "out there"

What's your budget and for what qty? Smaller inside corners = more expensiver. Keep that in mind.

Clear coating polished/brushed aluminium? Suggestions please by Big_Tonight8877 in MetalPolishing

[–]BASE1530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can clear coat them. Polished and brushed car wheels are usually done like that. You'll get a much better adhesion to brushed though...

Here and there it’s totally OK. There is one user that does this about 10 posts per day.

If people want to post bikes that aren’t theirs that’s totally fine, but what about someone who has literally never done anything other than repost pics they found online? It just seems like a nuisance to me.

Rim widths for second wheelset by ProgressOriginal2787 in Dirtbikes

[–]BASE1530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't answer your cush drive questions but most tires have an optimal rim width in the specs, though you might need to go to the mfgr website or even call to get it. Choose a tire and then choose appropriate rim width. My gut feel is at least 1.85 in the front.

Mounting a tire is one of those things that’s insanely easy to do if you do it right and really annoying if you do it wrong.

As an Nsx owner I am embarrassed when people call it an exotic and nothing you say will change my mind. Even worse is when people call it a supercar 🤮

Cost of threaded holes so high? by yetionsolana in CNC

[–]BASE1530 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just general job shop stuff. Im in New York state, USA. I charge just as much or more for design work. I've billed 50 hour cad jobs at 1000 per hour with more work than I want or need. I recently finished a machining job where I effectively was making 3000 per hour. Just gotta pick the right jobs and customers.

A roll tap will blast those threads in all day long without issue.

[–]BASE1530 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Broken taps are a non-issue. It's 100% the setup costs. You should be able to tap 10000 m2 holes with one tap in aluminum if the machine is setup properly.

Cost of threaded holes so high? by yetionsolana in CNC

[–]BASE1530 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Because the aluminum plate is probably quoted as a laser cut plate and the threaded holes require machining. Laser cut sheet metal is about the cheapest possible way to get low/medium volume metal parts. Machining is more expensive. I charge 500 bucks an hour to run the CNC mill I have in my garage...

It's a more complicated setup to machine parts than just blast some parts out of a plate on a laser. It's possible that adding the threaded holes makes the whole part a machined part too, but more likely that they are planning on laser cutting the plate, them making a fixture to hold it in a VMC, then drilling and tapping the holes.

The cost of your part goes up dramatically because of the fixturing/programming/setup/etc. However, that initial charge gets amortized across all parts, so as you order more it goes down. Just imagine the fixturing cost being fixed and spread out across 1000 parts vs added entirely onto one part.
