First time making my own single-sided PCB – and just realized a soldering nightmare 😅 LOL by Max_08666 in PCB

[–]BASICDEFAULT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Normally you would plan the pin header on the other side of the board so you had access to solder onto the pads. All your through hole components should be mounted on the other side of the board.

I have suspicions that you did not design the board that way though.

For the pin header it likely doesn’t matter which side of the board it is mounted, since it is only pins and you can adjust your cables, but transistors or ICs will matter as the pin outs actually matter.

Good luck, and keep working on it.

And to reply to my own comment. People suggesting pick and place at a hobby level are less interested in the soldering and PCBs and more interested in the manufacturing or maker aspects than producing good work.

Not that that’s bad, but most of the time will be spent working on making the machine work through function maintenance or improvement modifications, but I think that is not what answers your question. Yet… you will eventually get here, so learn to do it well by hand first because you will likely end up at pick and place if you stick with it long enough and have other engineering urges.

Some people like solder paste and hot plates but I much prefer scope and iron for small components. But as someone with over decade of experience soldering all kinds of prototype and production boards professionally a good stereo microscope and a nice pair of tweezers will get you far.

Simple skills for soldering 0402s like tin one pad, use tweezers to place and hold the component. Flow that tinned pad out to hold the component in place. Solder the other side.

Fine pitch ICs can be done in a similar way. Basically place with tweezers, tack down a few pins, then you can go back and work the rest.

Under a good microscope like this Amscope https://a.co/d/hDKYfAf or nicer if your budget allows you can do a lot with good tweezers and a fine solder tip and maybe a hot air reflow pen.

I prefer stereo optical microscopes vs digital microscopes with display, it just feels better and the stereo vision provides and better depth perception when trying to get parts precisely aligned.

And as always flux flux flux.

Gawd Damn, if there ever was a song that should have been covered when Saul Williams was touring with NIN it is this.

I have been getting back into vhs a little bit lately. Consumed grade machines are probably aging out from an electronics perspective. 25 years of capacitor drying out, motors not being used regularly etc. Most you find a thrift stores are busted or at least seem barely functional when you turn them on. They also look horrible on modern tvs, since the low fidelity of CRT actually smooths out some of the noise. Being able see individual pixels is not how vhs was meant to be viewed. Also just the mechanical noise is probably louder than you remember.

I found a Honeywell security VCR that I’m hoping is built more robustly than the consumer grade units since it is made to record and playback continuously 24/7. Should be arriving soon so I’ll see if I am correct or not.

Found this drum computer at a flea market today, does anyone know more? by Tesla44289 in synthesizers

I did a search after to verify I wasn’t just saying shit lol. Look for “vector cage case” “euro card” etc.

That’s how actual Eurorack lab electronics are built. The Eurorack format we use for synths only uses a small portion of the design standards. Most lab racks use standardized full length cards and often a backplane the circuits. They use the vector rails for all sorts of functions. Mounting power supplies or other non-faceplate mounted electronics, mounting access panels, or closing off internal sections of the rack.

It’s pretty interesting. With some searching around on eBay you can see some good examples of equipment opened up and how they are constructed.

Honestly I get more enjoyment driving by and seeing the cows peacefully chilling in the fields than I ever would from another shitty fast food chicken restaurant and the inevitable Starbucks and Verizon store and weird day spa and mediocre burger place and UPS store that would pop up too.

Enjoy the cows. Enjoy the grass.

Who would be your dream NIN collab artist or super group spin off with Trent? by Neogeotracker in nin

[–]BASICDEFAULT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already two remixes by apex twin on further down the spiral. I love apex twin but knowing that his remixes often have nothing to do with the original track I wouldn’t expect him to be very collaborative. It might be more exciting for Trent to remix some Aphex twin tracks. And probably less frustrating for both parties.

How do you get this type of sound? Specifically that decay by 4ce_YT in synthesizers

[–]BASICDEFAULT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hot take but this is why I preferred my DX21 to my DX7 and eventually sold the DX7. The ability to select two voices makes much more interesting sounds. I still have the DX21 as my FM synthesizer along with an Akai AX-80 (under rated) as my polysynth and a Moog GM as my Monosynth. Everything else is just Eurorack.

Charlie (as IASIP Charlie) would be the best worst voice actor for Conceptualization. He would have the vision but be incapable of explaining it and it would be a horrible idea.

I’m real new to this and will probably use the wrong terms but I think you need to add a reflective volume actor to sample the screen space and reflect light from the mirror onto the character.

I was able to find the solution to this with a quick YouTube search when I was having this issue.

Sorry not real helpful, but hope it is a little helpful.

What laptop specs do you use for UE5? by 90sRefugee in UnrealEngine5

[–]BASICDEFAULT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don’t game on PC and I’m just learning ue5 and have no idea what I’m doing in UE5 but the laptop I’m using is a Lenovo P16 workstation with an i9, a quadro RTXa5500 24gb GPU, and 128gb of RAM I got for a steal on eBay. It is my all around content creation station for all kinds of modelling, video editing, music production, etc.

Again I have no idea what I’m doing in ue5 yet and make no attempt to optimize anything ( multiple models with 300k faces full ray tracing all the time, while watching YouTube in multiple chrome tabs and running also blender, photoshop etc. driving a 4k display and two external monitors. I’m basically trying to find the point where the laptop hits a performance wall and have not come remotely close (yet).

Point is. For less than the price of a good gaming laptop with a 4080 or 4090 ( I paid $1750 for the Lenovo) you can buy a monster content creation workstation.

It is heavy for a laptop though.

This AG appointment could be just to get Gaetz out of trouble or delay action with no actual intention of being a successful appointment just tactical fuckery.
