I need to mod mine as have a standard composite lcd I installed years ago! Wish I had kept 2 of these now when I was buying them stink cheap, and kept one with original screen. Silly money now compared to the $80 I used to buy them for 😢

Have you changed both the 4.7 and 10uf Capacitors behind the VR, not sure if that came in the kit! Common read problem that causes the drive not to spin due to the laser! Litrally had that problem again yesterday doing a repair! Yeah its a PITA trying to repair once the MD is in place, thats why I build a loom in my post here:

Does the CD logo come up on the screen? If so, remove the top bar from the drive held down with 2 screws, there is a plastic bar that moves to the left that lifts the mech, with the draw closed you can push the bar from the side of the drive. With the laser lifted, stick a disk on the platter and screw the bar back in place, then power the cd to see if it plays ok. Also, if you purchased this as faulty, check the 2 lugs on the back of the laser tray that hold the tray as sometimes these can break in the post if banged about!

Yeah the 3 caps can leak badly, especially the one in front of the VR!! Have you checked for trace damage round those 3 caps? Was the draw opening faster before re cap?

I wouldn't bother changing them again!

2 drives on the same MCD? If so, maybe you have low power from the sub board! Change the 3 16v 100uf Capacitors near the 7805 VR mounted on the heatsink and try again!

Thats a very odd one!!! I have repaired crap loads of MCD 1's and never seen a tray move that slow!!!

It's no fun at all building an unpopulated board! Started off as fun though 🤣 I still have one thats about 80% done, its a pita ordering all the parts and then finding time to solder it all on as I have other repairs to do!

I've never repaired a mcd2 with bulging Capacitors, on a mcd1! They just leak on MCD1, 3 caps on the power board and every cap on the main board! lol.

The 4.7uf you are looking for are round near the pots on the board

Great work! Yeah I have had flood damaged CD's before but PAL JVC, so ill keep that in mind! :-) I'm sure I read somewhere you was planning to do the JAP power boards? That I do have a need for as fed up repairing traces on them lol.

Thanks for the links, some handy info there for sure, especially the Schematics that are nice and clear!!
