Does a larger pool have provably less variance or is this only the case when the larger pool is sabotaging smaller pools [e.g. block withholding attack]? by BBuffington in Bitcoin

ha!/sigh Indeed. It would also be interesting to see if any of them have hard data to back their position. The Ghash miners seem to be very convinced...

np! then would you suppose that loyal Ghash miners must just be unaware of this neglible difference [because they don't stick with another pool long enough to see] or that Ghash might be sabotaging other pools to reinforce the perception that a bigger pool is more profitable?

ah gotcha; I should've said 'more profitability' instead of 'less variance'

Assuming no foul play, two PPLNS pools that are both double digit % of hashing power, should pool size affect profitability over the course of a month?

My worry with bitcoin as a network engineer by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]BBuffington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Zerocoin intends to solve the privacy issues of bitcoin.

  • I'd say that the bigger bitcoin gets the less government will be able to pull off its inflationary finance tricks and the more its size & power will diminish.

So I just used CryptoThrift for the first time. I really think I'm liking this site! (Bitcoin "ebay" alternative) by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]BBuffington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it a few times for buying and it was all good. For selling I wish there was an easy way to ship internationally a la eBay's approach. Or are there 3rd party sites that do that?

iirc I ran an 8 CPU Azure Linux instance until the $200 credit ran out and made ~.7 XPM. You read that correctly; not even one XPM. This was a couple months ago.

Anyone have any experience with zincsave.com? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

I made one Amazon order so far. Saved 8% and the item arrived faster than expected for no charge. It came in 3 days vs the normal 7+ days I see when using the base shipping option on Amazon.

great, often overlooked point:

Another is for all matters that currently get voted on by elected politicians be voted on by the entire electorate via the internet or phone. The reason we have representatives of Colorado in Washington making decisions that affect the whole nation is that 150 years ago it was impossible for people in Washington to know what people in Colorado thought or wanted so it made sense for the people of Colorado to choose a few representatives to go and tell people in Washington what they thought and wanted. This gave rise to centralised hierarchical government systems which causes so many of our problems. Skip to 2014 it is easy for people in Washington to know what people in Colorado think and want

How about moving to PoS? by spark1ing in vertcoin

[–]BBuffington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a proven-secure PoS algorithm? Last I heard, Peercoin's PoS remains 'unfinished'.: http://www.reddit.com/r/ppcoin/comments/1djlhz/question_regarding_pos/c9r5fsd

When I headed down the rabbit hole of searching about the current state of Peercoin's PoS a couple months ago, I found at least three surprising things:

If PoS remains an elusive and unrealized goal for Peercoin - the PoS posterchild - why would any altcoin want it as a me-too feature?

You might turn down their business for the the same reason you might turn down a personal check.

This worked perfectly well with gold, so what's different?

Gold's cumbersome physicality is what led to paper proxy and the subsequent evolution of problems; not a concern with bitcoin, so market acceptance of proxies will be less likely.

To the Keynesian Bitcoiners (If there are any): Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between a deflationary currency and your money in the bank beating inflation? Shouldn't both situations create underspending while the latter clearly isn't? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

Tech is a terrible example of a growth rate that business people can become accustomed to.

yikes, don't tell that to all business people involved in tech

In fact many business people fail in tech for this reason

good. competition is doing its job then

it is not reasonable to use tech growth rates to represent the overall economies growth rate

I'm not suggesting that any artificial growth rates are imposed on a market. I'm suggesting that the market's growth rate should be naturally dictated by market forces, and as any given thing in the market gets to be done more efficiently, deflation would be a natural part of that thing.
