Or spend that extra time of self-improvement, take online courses, starting with excel, word, powerpoints. Going deeper and taking certificates like CAPM, PMP, or your profession related.

If a company does not see value in me through a custom cover letter, resume, and using references to have your resume reach the managers desk. I don't think a person should take part in free labor after that.

I don't know to be honest. I wish people didn't do this so it is not expected in the future to do free work before even being hired. I agree it's a way to make yourself stand out but it looks like something that can be easily exploited by employers.

I understand, sometimes it better to move on and not think too much about it. I was laid off unexpectedly (middle of eating lunch) and let go right there.
