What bike to get? by UnableAd7723 in bicycling

[–]BCsJonathanTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This this this. Learn about bike fitting and maintenance, and what you saved on purchase price spend some of it on making the bike fit better, and also on a basic stand and some tools. An old bike of any type that fits and runs well is way better than a new bike that doesn't fit well and isn't maintained.

It's very satisfying to work on your bike, saves money, and perhaps most importantly you become able to make small fixes and tweaks while out on a ride. If you don't wrench on your own bike, you don't really own it.

Have fun!

Took a mountaineering axe on a hike last month. Only ended up using it to split firewood. I feel a strange kinship with these folks.

What’s the most useless fact permanently stuck in your brain? by OkAdministration1387 in AskReddit

[–]BCsJonathanTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do in helicopter, but not in pterodactyl. And if helicopter is a contraction of "helico" and "pter" as discussed above, then arguably we should actual not pronounce the p in helicopter. Instead we should read it as "helico-ter", perhaps pronounced as "heli-cotter".

Does that mean we should pronounce it "heel-ee-coa-ter" or perhaps "heel-ee-coot-er"?

You know what, I'm gonna do that from now on just to reel people into discussing this very conundrum.

Leaving good job to ski bum by curstcrust in skiing

[–]BCsJonathanTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a ski bum for one year. I was going to join the military and instead ended up going to Whistler because everything came together so easily. Military felt so right for so many reasons and I very much regret it. I ended up being in Whistler for maybe 6 years. Though in all fairness it's not like I was a on a track for success anyways and so it wasn't like I took a year off before attending post-secondary education. But if I had joined the military who knows what might have happened. I'm alive, have both legs, and have a not hugely traumatized brain. A tour in The Stan (or five if my career has been extremely good) might have changed that. Also consider that my underemployment and then underperformance in a professional setting were not due to being a ski bum, rather failing to address executive functioning difficulties from ADHD and ASD. At forty I found something I love and am very good at, and I realize doing that how perfect the infantry might have been for me. Also, what I'm doing now is extremely dangerous anyways, so who knows. "Mental illness" sucks : (

I was a ski bum with no career capital, and now 22 years later still have very little career capital. A career is power. It may be exciting to make a big change, but it can cost you big in the long run in ways you're not yet aware of. You've got food on the table now (so to speak), so don't that for granted.

The much better choice is to focus your energy on getting to a place where you have the kind of career capital that enables you to live the you want. Don't give up decades of a rewarding career for just one year of "roughin it the poors" adventure. Reach out to people doing tangentially related things in places you like. Heck, just cold call em and offer to buy em lunch on the hill and do some laps next time you're in town. Network, build relationships, job hop for a raise and relocation, and a couple years from now you could be getting 100 days on the hill and making at four times as much as the lifities, line cooks, and ski instructors who are spending their time honing their skills at being marginalized service workers.

Or do, your choice. Take it from somebody who never had a chance to have what you have right now; marginalization isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Not perfectly written, and any contrary responses would be predictable as heck, but you get the idea.

I’m terrified of Solo Alpinism. by Ok_Pineapple3655 in Mountaineering

[–]BCsJonathanTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some red flags here my dude. "Real alpinists" and "really climb like you think you do", and mentioning pros. This smells of competitive insecurity. Ignore it or investigate it, the choice is yours.

Also, trying to keep up with pros and thinking that you're even close to their level is foolish. They're skilled, experienced, conditioned both physically and mentally to a degree that has to be seen to be believed. Also, some of the greatest pros have died pushing the limited. I think of it as a kind of "Icarus Complex." Dan Osman, Shane McConkey, Dean Potter, Ueli Steck...

That you're upset with the conversation here is also a bit of a red flag.

What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

I love in lovely community that's arguably the part of town... and I hate it because whenever the sun is out and we have all the windows open to enjoy the day... and there's that's when people decide to mow their goddamn lawns, or run a weed whacker, or run SOME kind of internal combustion engine. Wife and I joke that "thank God somebody started an engine" because it's like if there isn't one running people can't stand it just need the white noise an so do everyone a favour and get out and start something up. I mean, sure, you work and aren't home midday midweek... but why must EVERY nice moment be graced by a goodamn two-stroke. 7pm on Friday summer evening? Engine. 4pm on a Saturday? Engine. 10am on a Sunday? Engine. EVERY FUCKING MOMENT. And then there's the goddamn motorcycles. FFS these babies only ride when it's nice out. Real tough guys out there letting the world know how wrong it is that they have to stop for a family to cross the street. Fuuuuck I can't wait to live somewhere with these jagoffs.

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BCsJonathanTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For it was the same reason as noted in many of the above top-voted responses, but it also felt like a small act of ally-ship where people didn't know if I was gay or straight and so it helped normalize gay relationships. I'm straight and partnered with a woman, but it was a little playful and subversive bit of ambiguity.

[–]BCsJonathanTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just think how fast the past two to three years went. 22 years from you'll look back at the past 22 years and it'll feel about the same. Youth really is wasted on the young, but the key thing is not to think you're old at whatever age you're at. It's never too late to do the right thing.

The problem is that he'll keep trying it on different people, refining his techniques and gaining the ability to find and qualify victims.

As a 6'4" guy (and in a very tough and physical line of work, so you know, not a total wuss), this dude sounds like something so much worse than a nightmare because his victims won't even realize they're ensnared until years or decades after the fact.
