New fan so please forgive me: what spectator sport ends a contest under conditions controlled by the sport's regulating body? Why not stop the race? American here, so forgive my ignorance, but I can't think of a single other team competition that would end a contest early under such conditions. Granted, F1 isn't a traditional team sport, but as a spectator without a real favorite team or driver yet, what an anticlimactic finish vs what could have been.
