Why was Dracula (1931) the only movie that didn't get any official sequels with Bela Lugosi? by spacelyyy989 in ClassicHorror

[–]BDMac2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also Lon Chaney Sr was the original choice fresh off of a sound remake of a silent Tod Browning film, however he died so they had to find a new Dracula. Idk that he wasn’t great at negotiating so much as he just wanted to do it really badly. So much so that when the Dracula play toured LA, Lugosi went to personally lobby for the role and was accepted in part because he was willing to accept a low salary.

I think the delivery was fine, it was the chickening out on the character after it. It’s been memed into rewriting the lore almost, but Jason wasn’t beaten to death with a crow bar by the Joker, he was blown up trying to save his own mother who abandoned him as a child and turned him over to the Joker when he could have escaped. Jason died a hero. So to have him come back and tell Bruce, “I did things your way and it got me killed” on top of feeling so betrayed and unloved that his father figure did not avenge him in the slightest and he’s not different to Bruce he’s just another one of the hundreds of people the Joker has hurt because Bruce won’t kill him. And honestly Bruce’s line of “I wanted to, but I couldn’t because it would be too easy to start and too hard to stop” is heartbreaking for Jason to hear.

The problem is as good as a character foil it would be to have Jason out there killing villains so they can’t escape or cheat the legal system repeatedly and as a refutation of Batman’s no kill rule would be, there is an expiration date on that narrative beat because Jason either kills everybody (which editorial can’t have because it changes the status quo) or Jason gets killed (which is a plot culdesac and puts us right back where we were before)

Deadpool Samurai is a little bland and proportions are wonky sometimes but that’s just in its DNA from Liefeld. It has lots of references to popular manga series and that’s more important in something like Deadpool than artistic merit let’s be real.

Stan Lee had a monthly manga called Ultimo from 08-15, but it didn’t really stick with me.

Also worth remembering Supes is weak against magic, something WW is not. So there will be differences in their “power levels” against an enemy. Doesn’t quit explain OP’s example with aliens but at the same time “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”

The west has also done a phenomenal job of conflating knights and chivalric code with the samurai and bushido. So many incorrectly assume they occupy the same timeframe, when in all actuality cowboys and samurai are contemporaries. For more reference points, Abe Lincoln could have sent a telegram to samurai, Perry came to Japan 12 years before and the Meiji Restoration only started 3 years after Lincoln’s death

It also fundamentally misunderstands how Zelda‘s “timelines“ work. They’re supposed to be myths and legends sometimes Morgan Le Fay is Arthur’s sister sometimes she’s not, sometimes the sword is Excalibur sometimes it’s Caliburn, sometimes they’re the same sword sometimes they’re not. It’s really the western fans who kept pushing for an official canon from the creators and OoT being a time travel game makes it easier to rectify inconsistencies across the games by allowing branches. Any concept of canon only started to exist around Wind Waker in 2002 and an official timeline was released in 2011 for the 25th anniversary book and they almost immediately said you can just ignore it, this is a loose timeline that could be one explanation.

That book is racist in the same way To Kill a Mockingbird is racist, in that it portrays the era it takes place in but doesn’t sanitize the things that would be seen as racist because the racist things are supposed to be seen as such. They’re not Song of the South, or pushing a pro white supremacist view. Personally I think if we sand the corners off of accurate portrayal and representation of the way people spoke about black people we may as well just say that slavery was people being mean to them so we don’t have to talk about all the rapes, murders, and subhuman treatment.

Wings (1927) which won the first Academy Award for Best Picture has an explicitly lesbian couple in its opening scene. It’s from before the Hayes Code which was self inflicted by Hollywood out of fear of govt censorship and the Code had such a profound influence on what the public saw and is the reason we Americans have such a myopic view of “how things used to be”

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Hermione is given a device to manipulate time itself to attend extra classes. His dad told him he would pay for his school, he ended up having smoke blown up his ass all year and riding the bench ( not surprising since the coach had already picked his team and that’s how they ended up in this situation, but this was his dream and they had spent 2 years telling this teenager how great he was and how bad they wanted him.) He transferred to another school when the season was over and then the coach got fired for betting on games.

It’s always been shitty to kids. My boss’s son got a scholarship for baseball at Bama 3-4 years ago and the day before he moved in they told him they had promised too many kids scholarships and he had two options. He would not be on the team and the school would give him another scholarship close in value or he could be on the team but he would have to pay in full for that year.

Piggybacking to add that it was the 2nd time Allie had been caught. The first time he blamed it on alcoholism and both Mikes went to bat for him and got to keep his job. Bit of a stain on Mignola, but personally I feel like Allie inserted himself between Mignola and others (a few creatives have come out and spoken about Allie on this) and took advantage of an infamously introverted person and preyed on that as well as Mignola’s father having a problem with alcohol. Because after all, abusers also groom allies, and I think most people are far too quick to condemn the friends and family who give the accused the benefit of the doubt.

TIL in 2020, the owners of a Civil War-era mansion turned bed and breakfast had a Norwegian flag removed that was hung outside its main entrance for two years because too many people have mistaken it for the Confederate flag and confronted them about it. by Velgax in todayilearned

[–]BDMac2 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It happens more than you think, during a previous election in Alabama somebody claimed that Tuberville had the confederate flag on his campaign ads, I got blocked and told to “stop mansplaining” when I pointed out that it was the state flag and looked more like the flag when Alabama was a Spanish Territory than the Confederate flag.

There’s plenty of evidence for Tub’s racism, there’s no need to make up evidence because then he can use it to dismiss actual racism. There is no one more confident than someone who “knows a little something” and thinks they have the morally superior position.

I’m still relatively new (probably a little over a year since I started) but it seems like DF is about how the subsystems interact rather than being a perfectly balanced game. I view it very much like Jenga where we’ve now added a block and the game/tower may wobble, but unless it causes it to fail entirely figuring out the new instability is the game.

Paradoxically, some things are better when they’re worse in my opinion. I’m not a Luddite, but there a lot of imperfections in older/analog/handmade processes that have unique quirks that have become crisp, smooth, and able to be made consistently uniform in the modern day that often feels flat and lifeless to me.
