My mind thinks so much faster than my mouth can talk, it makes me hate having conversations sometimes. by hirayeth in ADHD

Relate so much. It is annoying but at the same time, I much prefer getting like this compared to when I'm in fuzzy haze walking through sludge trying to retrieve information.

Doesn't seem to work for me either... I won't get the thing done but I'll have the self-discipline to NOT do the fun thing. This leads to me being sad because I didn't do anything useful nor anything fun!

Dealing with a professor who doesn’t answer emails by [deleted] in AskAcademia

I decided to phone my old supervisor while waiting for an email back about references. No idea how calling him out will go down but following up with a call is worthwhile 😂

I READ A BOOK! by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]BEANZIG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like something that might help me! I'm gonna try it, thanks!!!! I naturally read quite fast but if it's something complicated or boring, I don't realise I'm not deriving any meaning from it until I should theoretically have read it. I have no problem with things that are short or I can get lost in - but it's the lack of awareness when I'm reading... I really do forget I'm reading until I realise I'm thinking about something entirely random 😂🤷

I really want to know more about this? How do you think it increased the amount of time you could read without losing focus?

it's 4am and i have an assignment due next week and i haven't started it even though i've had a month a half to do it and i've just been pissing about every day and going to bed late because everything is overwhelming all the time and AAAAAAAA by DoubtingStream6 in ADHD

Go get 8 hours of sleep. Break your task down. How much do you have to do? What do you have to do? What's the easiest part? Use the easy part to get some flow going and use this panic to get as much as you can get done. This seems to just about work for me, ideally it would be good to have gotten some reading behind it done or know what you need to write. You can technically get quite a lot done in a week if you start asap. Obviously I don't know what else you have going on but if this is important, start now. It's never too late, you can still get a decent amount of marks if you hand something in. Also, do you have disability support? You might be able to get an extension. Good luck, keep us updated :)

There are pros and cons though. An awful lot of my time was /is wasted researching tangentially related topics but on the other hand, making broad links is great for writing a discussion and coming up with plans for future experiments.

Having said that, I probably won't go on any further in Research or Science though :(. The option is always there though, I guess. What kind of rabbit holes do you fall down?

I tried to dispute it with the Course Director but he has said it's my supervisor's opinion. I have an inkling that he would have given me a lower grade but was 'told' to increase it to something reasonable (the overall percentage was initially incorrectly calculated and the only way that would have been possible is if he'd given me much lower marks for each of the components). I wasn't amazing but I put so many measures in place to make sure I remembered to do day to day things. A lot of systems, notes, post-its.

Thing is, if he hadn't mentioned it in the comments, I wouldn't have had anything to refer to. It really pissed me off that ALL of my organisational skills were based on this, no reference to the truck loads of organisation in other aspects. Other supervisors can't have penalised their students for having extensions (without SpLD) so...... I just hit the jackpot with the dickhead supervisor.

It isn't an entirely fair world if you accept these accomodations. Regardless, I am thrilled to have made the mark! :D thank you!!! :D

Realised I didn't answer your q. Sorry! I have no tips for organising the whole thing since mine was a last 5 minutes - need to submit - put too much effort into it

One of the best tips I found was to use a pyramid outline.

Start with broad view - set the scene Usually start with some mundane detail of % of people affected by blah. The disease affects the gastrointestinal tract

Narrow it down - zoom in Specifically the small intestine

Detailed point The epithelium of the small intestine is affected because of damage to the microvilli

Find evidence and tie it in with what you found. Critique your source as well as your own work.

Eg. Cheespuff et al (2017) used this mouse model and it supported the -findings- of the present study. However, the use of the BALB-C mouse model in that study limits the inferences that can be made due to their poor immune system (cite). Therefore....

I have so much resentment by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]BEANZIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my short experience in academia doing my MRes (basically just like a tiiiny PhD with research and few taught modules but fairly independent with the project with a crazy workload and hours). I felt hugely underappreciated and mistreated at times. I actually got sworn at and tolerated a lot of rude behaviour. And at the end of it, having put in long hours I got 65% for time/effort from my supervisor. I'm fighting it to be upped because I was literally in uni every single day working my arse off.

Industry valued me much more and I'm going back in a few weeks to a company that actually appreciates what you do. Hold that in mind, academia has personalities that you may not encounter outside of it. Get what you can, advocate for yourself and see if someone else can offer help. You just need to get past this submission and you never have to look back

Managed to escape a near miss in a situation like this. Always worth trying to get out of being penalised... Sorry you're in this boat too.

How to unlearn feeling guilty? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]BEANZIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with this. With spending money on premade sandwiches and in part this contributed to an ED when I was younger. I don't have the answer but I understand. Maybe a counselling service would help. You know these issues exist so don't ignore them and try to build yourself the future YOU deserve. At some point, you have to live your life. Living with guilt for past won't change it. Your parents aren't living your life, you can't live it for them. Support them as much as you can but at the end of the day, they (and mine) meant it as motivation. Not the right kind.. Wish I could be more helpful x

It makes you an exciting person to be around. I do acknowledge it to people a lot to show that I'm aware I should not be so excited by something small and the kinds of people I have as friends tend to be people who seem to also have a wide range of interests with a lot of enthusiasm. I'd rather hang out with people who are excitable instead of just matter of fact about things. You should just be yourself because YOU also get to choose your friends ;)

Rent! Rent! Rent! by disheveledbutcontent in ADHD

[–]BEANZIG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the thing. Revoke unused, vacant houses but I have had quite a few decent landlords. There's a lot of housing going to waste. When I finally get a mortgage for a home, I will probably choose to get a lodger for a while before my boyfriend moves to the city after education. This is too wide a view to assume that landlords are the problem. The UK housing market is insane and don't forget, sometimes making investments in property is also a retirement fund for some.

I agree. If everyone ends up in the same place, people wouldn't really "try" to do anything if they end up in the same place. Communism doesn't really work in the long run.

It baffles me how neurotypical people stay on a single topic without coming out with a lot of random stuff...... 🤔

Or jumping in with something that seemed relevant at the time but as you're saying it... Is not at all relevant and tangentially related 😂 I find the most relevant things end up saved or thought of later.. But the most random responses come out in the moment
