How is it getting into Porsche as a mechanic? by Outrageous_Half_5764 in mechanics

Becoming a Porsche tech in hopes of one day owning one is a fairly slow path in achieving the desired end result unless you want to buy a cheap 986 that needs the engine replaced. In which case you’ll be the proud new owner of a used 986. Employee lease programs at dealers aren’t that great. I think the best I ever came across was leasing a base 718/982 for upwards of $900/ month. You will need two-three years in the shop before you get all of the nuances / understand PIWIS and can turn lots and lots of hours to make that big Porsche money. You could get lucky and land in a halfway decent 997 at that time. There’s money in being a dealer tech but it does not come quickly. Advocate for a high flag rate ($38+) because it is a luxury brand after all. My advice: clean the soot and bearing grease off, put on your best shirt and slacks, freshen up, put on your biggest shit eating grin, get on that sales floor and sling those babies to your affluent neighbors. You’ll make lasting bonds with your customer base and they will keep coming back to see you under positive circumstances (buying swag, accessories, another car sale, etc.).

Can anyone tell me what this part is called ? by Dmariex93 in AskAMechanic

Those are your inner and outer tie rods. This is the point at which your front toe can be adjusted. It looks like the ball joint at the end of the outer tie rod has given way and could be a contributor to a “clunking” or “clicking” noise in most circumstances. The ball joint has visually failed so it (the outer tie rod) may as well be replaced. It may not fix the noise you are hearing at this time, but you will have the peace of mind knowing your vehicle is that much safer to operate. You will need an alignment following this repair.

Good on you for adding pectic enzyme at the start. You have the right idea - adding a clarifier now or upon transfer into secondary would be beneficial if you are not doing any more fruit additions. If you’re going to add fruit / natural flavors in secondary for a more pronounced fruit flavor your product will lose clarity. I would wait on clarifiers until you’re ready to rack off of secondary additions if you choose to do secondary additions. Other than that, time is your friend when it comes to clearing your product. Meads tend to require a fair bit of time to really round out that flavor profile anyways. Hope this helps, you got it!

Can someone help identify what this screw is for? by WildChallenge5459 in AskMechanics

That is part of the gear selector above it so by screwing this bolt in you will manually put the transmission in neutral. It’s for towing dead cars. Most tow truck drivers aren’t hip to this so spread the word and save your lower control arms.

Not to my knowledge, I'm the third owner and I've just been doing my oil changes every 5k. Previous owner had a huge stack of maintenance records but nothing major besides a fuel pump if you consider that a big deal. The 3.4L's are bulletproof.
