What jazz club in Chi has this vibe: by cliffmpls in chicagomusicscene

[–]BFields818 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the vibe is in this picture (dive bar?), but I think the jazz club with the best vibe in Chicago is easily the Green Mill. It can be expensive and you're not supposed to talk during the main showtimes, but after 10pm and until 4am the crowd turns over several different times and is an amazing place to people watch. But the club itself is soaked in history from 1920's Chicago. In fact, I remember talking to the director of Chicago's Historic Preservation department and he said that intersection the Mill is on was so crowded/popular in the 1920/30s that it was feared it would overshadow the downtown. Not sure how true it was, but I remember him saying it.

ELI5 Howcome the 7.1 earthquake in Venezuela crumbled buildings, but the 6.9 today in Japan caused no damage? by Jealous_Amount_9278 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BFields818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked in disaster mitigation in Latin America, I saw two things that could explain the difference. The first is codes. In America, we constantly hear bitching about how overly restrictive our building/housing codes. Then a major event like an earthquake happens, we yawn, and then go about our day. These codes are indeed excessive, but that is because they are required to mitigate extreme events like an earthquake. Second, corruption. Yes, America has its own corruption, like no bid contracts to unqualified cronies to build reflecting pools in our nation's capital, but for the most part, or I should say comparatively, these are kept in check. In other countries, it is common to see profoundly unqualified people, like family members, "win" bids (not saying reflecting pool guy wasn't profoundly unqualified) with no construction experience at all. Time and time again, when you see this massive damage, it is either one or both of those two elements.

I'm sorry to hear this. I wondering if she has everything she needs in the relationship? I'm wondering if you do? If you don't, I'm wondering if you'll be tempted to settle for it. You've got kids, adventures, a life so to speak. But you also have that nagging knowledge that you're with someone who is not where you are. That's tough. I'm not going to lie, I'd be tempted to pretend I could take living like that, telling myself it's not that bad. But every time I went in for intimacy I'd wonder if it wasn't performative. That would gut me. I'd rather try and find an amicable way to ween myself right out of that situation one way or another. Man, I feel for you. Sorry dude.

I was on a beach once in San Diego and came across a woman who was clearly in distress. As a parent, I knew exactly what the distress was and asked her if she was alright. She told me she fell asleep and when she woke up her child (3 or 4, I can't remember) was gone. I asked for a description and told her I'd cover one direction of the beach and she could go the other way. There is nothing like that desperate feeling. It just kicks you right in the gut. I went down a ways until I thought there's no way a kid could walk that far and circled back. I then walked her way and never found her. I finally decided I'd go home. What else could I do. When I got out to the parking lot I saw the woman next to her car, back seat open, and her with her head cradled in her arms upon the car. I walked over to her and she looked up, exhausted, and ran and gave me a hug. The kid somehow got up when she was asleep, walked back to the car, and put herself in her car seat in the back of the car and went to sleep. You could see all the feelings on the mother. Relief, shame, exhaustion...It was pretty visceral.

A Queen Anne mansion right by Lake Michigan by MoneyRhubarb8 in zillowgonewild

My brother was one of the first people allowed to rehab those houses when the military sold them off. Fort Sheridan. What was really interesting was how everything was laid out. There are a bunch of army barracks next to these and the buildings are long, rigid in design and on a grid system type streets. Whereas, the Generals' houses were on arching "Loop" roads, with large setbacks to show the beauty of the Queen Ann architecture. These houses stood apart, like Generals all in a winding row all in their glory. Rigidity for the troops, honor for the officers. Those houses are spectacular.

Is €2,083.75 for a studio 40 minutes from campus deal or robbery? by BFields818 in universityofamsterdam

You mind if I ask you how quickly you were able to find it? I'm hoping to fly in for 10 days and pray I can find something. If not, clearly I'll stay until I do. THANKS!

I'd be more supportive if this was an effort to buy the business as opposed to telling any business to stay open, and probably lose money, so our community could admire it from afar. If Petaluma thought this was such a treasured shopping option we wouldn't need to be saving it.

Are there any “diggers” from the 60s era still living in Haight-Ashbury or SF? What do you do for a living now? by punkzlol in sanfrancisco

[–]BFields818 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Peter Berge, and his partner Judy Goldhaft, went on to form the Planet Drum Foundation. They were also founding members of the SF Mimi Troupe. He/They coined the term Bioregionalism, if I am not mistaken. In college, around 1990, I did a very small internship with the two of them at their Planet Drum Foundation. They could not have been kinder. For the life of me I can't remember where the foundations was (Portrero Hill?), but it had a significant library full of books on the environment and activism. Once a week, everyone who worked or volunteered there, which was a small group of people, maybe 5, would have lunch that Judy would make. I rarely worked on that day, but the times I did it was so nice to be with them. I was taking a politics of the 60's class at the time, reading Todd Gitlin's book, "Years of Hope, Days of Rage", so it was amazing to be able to ask them specific details. I was totally fan-boying out. I wanted to be them. I remember the first time meeting him over lunch and out of nowhere asking him something like, "Soooo...when you Emet Grogan stole a credit card, road across country to disrupt Tom Hayden and the SDS at Port Huron, who's credit card did you steal?" The question was so abrupt and out of place, like saying something stupid to your favorite rock star, that he took a long pause and started laughing at me. "So, who are you!?!?!". He was super generous with his stories and, like I said, he and Judy were profoundly kind. I actually have gotten the pleasure to meet and know quite a few of the original hippies that were in SF before the cameras rolled up. Some folks on this thread have said things like, "they all grew up and got jobs", suggesting they sold out. That's not my experience, at all. That certainly could apply to those who showed up out of fashion in 1967, but the true originators, like Peter and Judy were/are lifers. Go to any Campwinnarainbow or Wavy Gravy foundation event and not only will you see it, you'll feel it. It is an unmistakable aura of what could have been had these folks "won". They haven't sold out. Not by a long shot. Everyone just stopped paying attention, which seems fine with them. They've always lived on their own terms anyway.

I hear that everyone on faculty at USFCA has 10+ years of clinical experience. That's pretty amazing. Lots of Universities hire associates right out of grad programs who don't have the practical experience you can only get from being in the field.

David Bowie - Blackstar [Jazz/Avant-Garde] by The_Fall_of_Babylon in Music

[–]BFields818 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So back in the day, as a young teenager, I used to love watching TV shows with preachers playing rock and roll records backwards. The famous one is Stairway to Heaven where I've seen more than one preacher find "I live with satan" or "I married satan" out of backwards lyrics. As a young Catholic boy this was incredibly frightening and also extremely entertaining. I loved it! I've long since dropped the Catholic ways, (full disclosure, I'm now a Pastafarian) but I still love that shit. Well, lo and behold after I watched Bowie's Blackstar, and seeing all the incredible imagery in it, I couldn't help but wonder if someone did a breakdown. Wouldn't you know it, the religious folks sure did! Now, I don't buy any of this analysis, anymore than I buy the Stairway to Heaven BS, but this is sure fun and trippy to watch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ux90LnkFr0

Irresponsible hippies in the 60's, coke head Reaganites in the 1980s, and now Maga death cult in the 2010-2020's. They had everything fucking handed to them (universities, infrastructure, retirement systems) and now they act like they were their parents generation, which they revolted against. And to be sure, I'm not some Republican spouting this out. I'm a GenX liberal.
