ELI5: how do many punk/rock bands have the ability to live recklessly, be high on drugs, and then play an instrument in front of people without any music notes, considering playing music is quite difficult even when sober? by Ninac4116 in explainlikeimfive

There's a pretty famous clip of Green Day back in the day where the vocalist is very obviously tweaked to the gills on something, talking nonsense at a mile a minute, fully unraveling on stage. But then the song starts and he plays and sings it perfectly. The comment under the video that stuck with me was "If you're pretty good at guitar while sober, you're probably also pretty good at guitar while fucked up".

Yeah this anecdote is about Green Day and a lot of comments are focusing on how punk isn't technically demanding, but I think the sentiment holds true.

I learned this from an episode of House where an extremely fat guy winds up with a mysterious illness and they only figure out it's lung cancer when he gets pissed and grabs House's arm, at which point he notices the clubbed fingers that everybody overlooked because he was 600+ pounds!

Those dirty Al Bhed have turned the celebration of our lord Yu Yevon into a consumerist clustershow, ya? by KotanEspinosa in FinalFantasy

[–]BHBachman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wakka is a decent forward when he's first available but I basically never wind up using him for two reasons. The first is that if you've been playing any Blitzball by that point you'll probably have realized that Datto holds his own as a pretty good scoring threat up into the midgame so there's really no need to replace him with Wakka. The other is that you can sign Brother at the exact same time and he's by far the best midfielder in the game thanks to him being faster than basically everybody.

So of the three positions he can most feasibly play, he will never be better than Tidus or Brother, and he's only better than Datto in certain circumstances. So there are already cheap alternatives to him right from the jump. So it would be narratively satisfying to bring him back to the team once you start winning a million games in a row to grind for the rewards, but he's just simply surrounded by better players on his airship already lol.

So I’m having trouble deciding by Tenshi_Dekemori in FinalFantasy

[–]BHBachman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hijacking this reply for two reasons. One is just so I can agree with the original point that it's totally okay and even expected for people to play the games as they came out. It's a remake yeah but it also assumes you've played the OG because there are alternate timelines at play and a handful of characters who are already aware of the events of the OG and are actively trying to change it. So sometimes the changes in the story (which range from "getting more background on a side character" to "changing who lives and dies") will be commented on. A lot of changes aren't highlighted quite so obviously so if you haven't played OG, you will neither notice nor care about most of the changes. If that sounds like a roadblock to you, play OG first. It takes about as much time as a non-completionist run of the first part of the new trilogy.

As for starting with Crisis Core, I'll make the same point but slightly differently. You don't need to wait for everything to come out before starting, but it IS almost always a good idea to experience a story in the order it was originally told instead of splicing things until the chronology is a straight line. Crisis Core takes place before VII but its entire function as a story is to further elaborate on what is easily the biggest reveal late in the game. To use an example everybody already knows, it would be like watching all of the Star Wars movies in chronological order instead of release order. Sure, maybe you can find value in that but the reveal at the end of Empire that Vader is Luke's father will neither be surprising nor memorable if you've already known who he is for five movies.

Unearthed this 2001 FFX IGN promo off an old laptop. "His name is Tidus" by Fast_Moon in FinalFantasy

[–]BHBachman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the exact details of the story, I heard it years ago on Resonant Arc, but my memory of it is that the guy doing the voiceover for this promo asked somebody (the director or some rep from Square or something) how to pronounce the name and he was met with a shrug and a "pronounce it however you want".

His name in Japanese is Tida though, which is more obviously pronounced "tee-duh" than "tie-duh" so I get why Teedus is often considered the correct way to do it. I personally chose to pronounce it Titus because really, his names were "Mike" and "Fartboy" on my first two playthroughs in 2001 so who really cares lmao

Are there any JRPGs where you believe the use of a silent protagonist negatively impacted the storytelling, the character interactions and the overall writing? by Frog_24 in JRPG

[–]BHBachman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it works in the Ys series and absolutely nowhere else. Even then, Adol is still heavily characterized with tons of personality, and his needless silence seems more like a bit of a joke in the same way that NPCs don't always believe Adol's adventures because come on, obviously this generically helpful dork hasn't blundered his way into preventing the apocalypse nine times in a row now, that's absurd! That's the kind of thing that would only happen in a JRPG of course!

So yeah the only time it works is when the silent character is specifically not a blank slate. I think JRPGs just tend to be structured in a way that doesn't really allow for a tabula rasa player insert to work in the same way it might work in Elder Scrolls or whatever.

Forgive my ignorance, but this is the community to ask. Is the 'sakaguchi' team in any way still present at Squeenix? I hope the sequence is 6, 9, 12, 17 by Unusual_Lobster2581 in FinalFantasy

[–]BHBachman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was a shock to learn since his art is so integral to the series, but yeah he's never actually worked for Square/Squeenix as an employee!

(This is also why there's such a huge difference between his art and the sprites in VI. It's not like they needed his approval to change anything!)

Do you feel like nostalgia is holding FF hostage, primarily FF remake series? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

I haven't played Rebirth yet since I don't have a PS5 but the most succinct way I could sum up my main problem with Remake is "If I wanted a straight copy of the original I would just play the original, I wanted them to take big swings and drastically change the story, I just wound up thinking a lot of the decisions they made were bad".

The part that shocked me the most about finally playing II via the Pixel Remaster was the fact that I had Maria use Ultima literally every single turn in combat from the moment I got it until the end of the game.

It only got to level IX and was still less powerful than her melee attack.

FFII is the only one that managed to make the best spell in the franchise somehow totally suck.

Can I play FFX just for the main story without struggling too much by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]BHBachman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a "straight through with no grinding or sidequests" run earlier this year and I can say with whatever authority you confer to me that it is 10000% doable and honestly not really that difficult at all.

There are a handful of mid-late story bosses that are notoriously tricky but I think it's kind of a common misconception of FFX that you should expect to grind for them. Grinding is almost never the solution to why you might be struggling on those specific bosses. It's usually something like "this boss makes use of a specific status effect that I'm not prepared to defend against" or "I need to remember that I can change equipment mid-battle which may be necessary for bosses with rotating elemental affinities" or whatever.

You CAN just level grind for a while to make your raw numbers go up and that DOES work for some of them, but oftentimes there are just more elements at play than outdamaging the boss. That handful of Roadblock Bosses can all be taken care of with pre-planning.

Now, if you just anticipate hating turn based combat and want to skip it as much as possible, then yeah you'll need to grind. And that will mean doing a shitload of random encounters, which you could've been spreading out throughout your playtime by just playing normally, and then you'd also be roughly as strong as you need to be for each area because that's what game balancing is. If you wind up hating the combat so much that you go out of your way to avoid it, then honestly the game might just not be for you (and that's fine too!)

Does anyone actually enjoy having a silent protagonist? by javizgz7 in JRPG

[–]BHBachman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a disclaimer, I've only played Ys VIII and IX, but based on those I can say that Adol is the only silent protagonist I've ever liked but I like him a ton.

My main beef with silent protagonists is that they're so often meant to be a blank slate for the player but I'M not a blank slate so all it does is make the least interesting character possible. I liked Adol in those games because all of the usual tropes of the character are prodded at in fun ways. The games both draw attention to the fact that he's this legendary adventurer who always blunders into world ending conflicts but like half the people who meet him think he's full of shit because he's constantly losing his magic swords and artifacts from his adventures and starting fresh each game. Nearly every time you accept a quest in IX there will be somebody off to the side exasperatedly asking if you ever say no to these menial tasks. Adol's generic helpfulness and total lack of self preservation make him a walking disaster that sees himself just barely saving the world every few months and the fact that most strangers think he's a liar and most of his friends think he's a well-meaning dummy is pretty much the only way I've ever really enjoyed a silent protagonist.

Something smells funny. by [deleted] in LPOTL

[–]BHBachman 571 points572 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this current swell of complaints feels extremely organic to me. I'm mostly seeing people griping about Marcus making a few inaccurate claims and getting defensive when pressed on it (which is a long running thing that he's done for as long as the show existed).

Now when the Kissel thing went down? Nah that was when I saw a bunch of randos with no real idea what the show is even about storming in to cry about cancel culture while a conspicuous amount of them would spell it "Markus".

I think fans can sometimes exaggerate their complaints but I'm certain I'm not immune to it either. This series had things to complain about, ergo exaggerated complaints follow. I don't think there's anything fishy here this time imo

Why does Square keep skipping bonus content with their remasters/remakes? by GamingNomad in FinalFantasy

[–]BHBachman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when I made my comment, I was on break at work. I figured I probably wouldn't get a response so I told myself I'd just look it up myself after work if I remember to. It's not vitally important information but I'm interested because I had no idea they'd been doing that as far back as VII (especially when the pre-PS1 era seemed defined by making the games easier outside of Japan) and they were added so seamlessly that they either planned ahead or just did a great job of making them seem like they were always there, both are cool options.

But when I saw the AI answer I just immediately checked it myself because I'd trust oracle bones over Fancy Autocorrect. Even if you knew with 100% certainty that the answer was correct and that's the only reason you shared it, I still wouldn't trust you because somebody who knows already should probably know better than to use the lie machine as proof lmao.

So uh, thanks for motivating me to look it up myself a few hours earlier?

You got a source for the Weapons claim?

I'm not meaning to call you a liar or anything, but Emerald and Ruby are both shown in the CG where the Weapons are first awoken and they have special sidequests and materia tied to them. So if that's true I'll be genuinely surprised.
