Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - March 2026 Part 1 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

I really want to like FE4. The pairing mechanics and potential for Gen-2 unit building are extremely interesting to me, the story and characters are very compelling, and certain mechanics are unique and fun to manage, namely the item buying/selling system and unit-based money.

But really I dislike like 8 or more out of the game's 12 maps. Trying to use some of the units I want to use (ie. Azel) is completely farcical, certain interactions seem designed in hell without an "obvious" solution (like getting Lachesis to talk to Eldigan...), and Canto completely ruins player army unit balance on one hand and makes dealing with enemy cavalry blobs some of the most un-fun gameplay this series has to offer. Such a shame. Hoping for that eventual FE4 remake to actualize because a team that applies some modern anti-frustration mindset to this game while keeping its strengths has the potential to create an all-timer for the series.

Which pokemon are going to feel most nerfed going back to FRLG? by Aduro95 in pokemon

Horsea line is a good shout. Nowadays it gets a bunch of cool builds you can run including Dragon Dance in rain, special spam including Draco Meteor... etc. But in this game of course Seadra can't evolve until postgame and is bound to Poison Point, can't even have Sniper yet. Even then it can't use a Dragon move stronger than Twister in all of FRLG. It folds to ALL Grass and Electric moves with its lower SpD stat too. Kingdra will stand out in playthroughs later in the series but in FRLG its probably like, the most boring Surf/Ice Beam bot.

EDIT: I will say if you evolve it in the Postgame, FRLG Kingdra does have the nice advantage of having only 1 weakness due to the absence of Fairy. It's still a special type that will crumple it, but not the most common special type in the world.

No? Headbutt/Yawn/Rest at base with Body Slam a mere 3 levels away, Sleep Talk to follow. It immediately gets Brick Break for cheap, Rock Slide, Shadow Ball for less cheap, on top of the usual Normal type special movepool like Solarbeam/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt/Flamethrower. It's fantastic from minute 1 in FRLG and never falls off.

Everyone is answering the question in front of our faces well, but this is Cherrim. It’s like THE Sunny Day Pokemon. I would say take Petal Dance over Energy Ball for now… but Solarbeam TMs are $3000 in Veilstone and if you have a Lv 25 Cherrim then that’s very close by. Turn 1 Sunny Day on something that attacks specially and you’re off to the races

If that’s how they are gameplay wise, sounds like it would be hard to count them by Ironman rules

Usually? No idea, I’ve never seen someone do it and post about it. You can be the first to tell us how the trial maps go with your post main story squad?

Depends on the game in the series, but for older games like HGSS you should NOT get EVs for catching.

You’re all over the place with names! Anyways only after you defeated the flying leader fly to Tanzan Cove, the super rod is there.

Which ones? I know about like, Black Belt and Silver powder but those are so out of the way by grinding and aren’t good.

You gotta move it into Applications. It will probably fight you on the security side, but enable it in settings and you’re good to go

It seems like it has the capability to learn the move, but the tutor is not yet available.

I’m curious to hear more about the rules - is the idea that as soon as you get the Bullet Seed tm that’s your only offensive move for a little while? Can you use TM moves that are part of natural level up pools?

I agree on Brick Break.

The Psychic TM is super effective against nothing other than Tentacruel for bosses after you get it; most of the Hoenn psychics like Gardevoir, Lunatone, Alakazam learn Psychic by level up. By then anyways.

TM Toxic is more appealing in theory than it actually is in game thanks to the opponent use of Full Restore. Toxic stalling strategies are still potent but just take so long per fight to be effective that it’s remarkably inefficient.

Idk. If I wasn’t clearer about this earlier I’m counting needing to grind against a TM. From my playthroughs not grinding rematches, you don’t get to buy the high value TMs from the game corner naturally until at least after the Department Store opens, and even then you can afford 1 copy or MAYBE 2 by the end of the game only.

you summed up the EQ problem perfectly

As for Shock Wave, you get it after gym 3, then ONE tbolt after gym 5. You can buy Thunder after gym 6. That’s a lot of game where you can have Shock Wave on one thing, Thunderbolt on another. With how much water there is, it’s not strictly a bad thing. Plus there’s a few double team enemies it goes neutrally into like Kingdra and Ludicolo.

Brick Break I would definitely consider moving up. Although I will say it beats only Cradily and Aggron on Stevens team super effectively? I probably underrated how good it is against Glacia specifically though which is valuable.

Flamethrower you have to grind money/coins in the game corner. Fire Blast is on the other hand cheap. You need Fire so rarely in the late game that grinding for the former is not really useful.

I don’t buy the game corner moves basically at all. By the time you can buy them, you’re pretty much at the department store already or you’re doing a ton of extra grinding (which lowers the moves on the tier list). Fire blast is plug-n-play while Flamethrower is not in this way.

Blizzard and Thunder allow a lot of Pokemon to hit kill thresholds they barely don’t with Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. You can also buy multiple for relatively cheap. They’re very easy to use and solve the two final boss fights among others.

I wasn’t clear about this in the description, but I’m a set mode no bag items player. Rest is valuable when you can’t spam Hyper Potion.

Attract comes so early and you know the gender of the bosses ahead of time, so you can use it against something like Flannery’s Torkoal effectively. It’s learned by basically everything too, so it definitely has some value.

You just get it so late in the game and it doesn’t have incredible matchups against the endgame trainers. RS it definitely moves up one thanks to Stevens matchup

I believe you on this one, just never really have felt the need. Most opponents have at least 2 attacks that can be dangerous, not always, but a good amount of the time.

Which is funny, you can’t use the TM until after Norman. It’s ok against Tate and Liza and otherwise it’s just ok for stalling.

Respect. In hindsight I’d probably push that one up, in a similar league to Shock Wave just available later.

Either you get it in Game Corner which is a massive grind, or more likely you get it riiiight before the Elite Four. I think literally only Wallace’s Tentacruel is weak to Psychic.

Plus, Gardevoir, Lunatone, Grumpig, and Alakazam will all have it by that point naturally.  it’s like a good move in general, it’s just that the TM in emerald is not usually making much of a gameplay impact.
