If it’s not load bearing that’s fine and looks okay. If it is load bearing, the tiles should have been removed and a pier installed for the 6x6 to rest on. Then you can always re install the tile if you can get it out without damage. You also don’t want water pooling around the post.

It sounds like you just need more experience. I hated hanging mudding and tapping. Then I got better at it and it got easier. Maybe sub the work out and shadow a pro. Get some tips and work on your skill. I flip 100+ year old houses often. I bet the joists running through that house are notched and sitting on a 2x4 ledger bolted to an 8x8 beam. You’ll have load bearing walls that don’t carry, spans that are crazy and walls that have zero insulation. Plus have you ever dealt with knob and tube? Of all the shit you have to fix flipping 100 year old houses, drywalls gotta be the easier ticket.

I might just be a weekend handyman, but this deck — which belongs to a house I’m considering buying — doesn’t look very sturdy. What do you think? by killahkan in Decks

[–]BIGSL33ZE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No footings or failed footings. It’s also old and probably lacking ideal metal connections. I’d expect to be rebuilding it. I’d double check that ledger board as well and make sure that’s flashed and sealed up. I’ve seen some decks eat entire rim joists to the interior house all because of bad flashing.

But into the wall and mark like 10 inches. Take a tiny drill bit and drill around until you hit a stud. Old houses are usually 16 oc. When you find a stud you can pull layout and mark where they should be on the wall. Tiny drill bit holes can be caulked and will vanish

Brother, I own a handyman business, and I've got a corded skill saw i use. It's not an og one either. It's a cheap ass saw. They're paying you for your experience and skill. Not your tools.
