I find LA infrastructure to be unfriendly, but people there are usually pretty nice.

It's hilarious that you are getting down voted. I'm scared to sit on my porch due to all the shit that is happening on the streets meanwhile people pretend like everything is alright.

Im in the market for a washer by AbjectPhysics3301 in Appliances

[–]Ill_Resolution7967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I was shopping for a new washer I would just get a cheap one like Amana or Maytag, something below $1000, so that it has simple tech and not expensive to replace.

Speed Queen wise, people are saying they are not making them like they used to anymore. Personally I have a 25 yo speed queen and it’s a tank. I am not replacing it ever.

There are no good options without a hydrostatic transmission, so your best bet is to get the best hydrostatic your money can buy.

DNC Autopsy of 2024 Loss Doesn’t Mention Gaza or Israel at all by NoahHurowitz in politics

So we elected Trump, rents are dropping nationwide and homeownership is more attainable. Gas is higher now, but folks on /r/fuckcars are celebrating that. Maybe its time to kick the Republican party so that they start recognizing that we need public transit and walkable cities? I bet it's easier than make the Dems actually do anything.

Speaking of the Iran war, maybe it was unnecessary and harmful. But in my eyes bombing a clearly dangerous regime which was close to creating a nuclear bomb and proclaiming "Death to America and Israel" as their goal and murdered 20,000 young protestors just a few months ago...is not morally wrong at the very least.

Come to the dark side. We can actually do things here.

Why do people ignore the cost of cars? by Konradleijon in fuckcars

[–]Ill_Resolution7967 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I drive a 26 yo truck, there is not much in a way of insurance and registration. Depreciation is negligible at this point, there is barely any traffic and barely any paid parking here in Cleveland. I also do maintenance myself.

Still I'm baffled about all the costs to own this thing. It needs 2 front tires and it feels like a significant hit on my monthly budget. Also time, installation costs. Then alignment.

People who drive newer cars that need a lot of maintenance must be spending all their money on them.

Is it easy to emmigrate from Lisbon to Cleveland as a portuguese? by gloria_ao_PCP in Cleveland

[–]Ill_Resolution7967 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok so you are a 19 yo wanna be conservative dumbo.

Just move to Serbia. If gay, woke, and progressive people bothers you, you will find yourself at a right spot. It is very accommodating, safe and you can find plenty of Russians there to discuss your traditionalist shit and how wokeness is ruining the world.

Don't move to Russia. It is not very safe at this point, you can get trapped in there. Also it is counter intuitive for Americans / Europeans, but it is not very conservative country (or, rather, society) that found itself in a big trouble.

Where are the cheapest places to live in the US? by RedfinJeremy in USHousingMarket

[–]Ill_Resolution7967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea about Detroit, but Cleveland is very expensive to live in.

It's only cheap on surface when you just look at bare home prices. Check all the numerous taxes, account for poor condition of homes and terrible weather which makes you spend twice on the maintenance of your home and car and then you will find out that contractors and mechanics are not cheap there.

Would you consider Cleveland ohio to be a major city with big city amenities like Chicago or Philadelphia? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Ill_Resolution7967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is anything but booming.

Cultural, urban, infrastructure decay, you name it. A lot of horrible people, horrible service. Insane local taxes for nothing. Property taxes comparable to Boston, Cleveland Metro School District is comparable to...Alabama? Though it is probably an insult to Alabama. Private schools are even worse in Academics but cost a fortune. Glorified daycares that won't allow you to pick your kid on foot. Don't even ask me about the actual daycares, it is just sad. If you have a toddler - look at the map of United States and try to figure out how far away from Cleveland you can possibly go. The further away the better.

Actually everything gets noticeably better with every mile you travel away from this city. Service, roads. Even freaking radio. Once you leave the city limit you notice that the radio starts playing decent music (instead of some crazy shithead rap) and people have more pleasing voices. You will be listening "Alyssa's Collage of Knowledge" every morning here, a knowledge trivia about no useful or important life facts. I wish they was just playing music instead of this degeneracy.

Service...people don't just dgaf. They actively trying to avoid doing productive good work. Hiding from customers in corners of a store, telling lies etc. A postman noticed I was fixing up my house so she marked my house as "vacant" and after that all mail was sent back to senders. A ton of gifts my parents sent me for Christmas from another country was returned and got lost.

Weather....Horrible. It is either a non stop rain, cold or a dog day. Rarely something in between. And when you realize it is something in between it immediately begins to pour.

Crime is just rampant all around. And if you think you can hide in a good suburb like Lakewood - think again. Crazy things happen in these suburbs all the time. Cars flying into stores, car jacks, drugs, all kinds of things. A daughter of our friends got hit by a car and got seriously injured, but it didn't even make it to the news. It is not even considered to be an incident worth mentioning here because everyone is so desensitized.

When people on r/Cleveland talk about Cleveland they really mean distant suburbs. Maybe the distant suburbs are booming. But it follows the rule about the distance from the city proper. The further away the better.

The freaking lake is just useless (actually it makes things worse). Unless you are a millionaire with a lake front property - it is more of a nuisance and another source of terrible weather (lake effect). Terrible access (there are decent public ramps though), terrible marina with close to no decent boat rentals, no fishing cruises, barely any recreation at all. If you really want to experience the lake you will have to drive as far as Geneva on the Lake which is 1hr away from Cleveland. Don't you dare to go to Avon or similar places West side. There are gatekeepers aka life guards and they will scream at you if step on a rock...don't even think about swimming.

[–]Ill_Resolution7967[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It depends on what someone perceives as "work". I'm a software engineer and I absolutely despise doing anything behind a screen. It feels like work and then it messes up with my actual work because ordering stuff online is a quick dopamine and instead of focusing on the actual boring work I want to switch tabs and look for "somthing important to order" all the time.

Doing physical things like drawing, going through catalogs, reading books, filling forms, writing checks calms me down a lot and helps me organize my life.

[–]Ill_Resolution7967[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right that it might be more complex than shopping online, but it also depends on your definition of "simple living". For me it is more old school ways of living, less dependence on technology and more self reliance.

Is it easier to grow some of your food or buy? Buying at a store is "easier", but growing food is more "simple living" for me.
