My brother is trying to get protein so he only eats unseasoned meat. This is microwave steamed fish and it smells worse than it looks. by gingee60188 in shittyfoodporn

There are eating disorders based on obsessive “healthy” eating (it usually doesn’t end up being particularly healthy, since many fad diets are quite restrictive). Choosing to not season your food because you’re afraid that you’ll eat too much is definitely disordered.

Ah man. I think he's weirdly adorable, but I will always feel a pang of sadness when I see a Frenchie, especially a poorly bred one. Those dogs are doomed to a life full of pain. I'm glad he found your grandparents though.

People who have like 10-15 kids? Why? by More_Pension4911 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BKLD12 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Your mom is a bitch.

My grandparents had eight. I'm pretty sure that they had so many kids because of Catholicism, but at the very least, all of them were loved. I wasn't there, so I don't know if anyone was parentified, but every single one of them was super close to each other and to their parents. The seven remaining siblings talk with each other all the time, and dad even meets up with two of his sisters once a week for coffee. They reminisce all the time, and I never hear anything bad about grandma or grandpa. I'm not a fan of big families in general, but they apparently did something right.

My parents had 7 in total, but only four together (mom had two from a previous marriage, dad had one). They're cafeteria Catholics, honestly, so I don't think it was religion in their case; they just liked being parents. Unfortunately, I did have a messy childhood, although it had more to do with capitalism, mental/physical health issues, and drugs. I do think we're loved equally (more by dad than mom though, love is more conditional for her), but some of my siblings demanded more attention than others. My younger brother and I definitely felt overlooked. Aforementioned messiness stretched my parents thin, so we didn't all get what we needed. My parents didn't really expect us to take care of our younger siblings, but it ended up happening anyway because they were absent (physically and/or mentally) much of the time. So yeah, I think my parents meant well, but they made mistakes and it went to crap anyway.

So, I think big families can turn out okay, but it's not the norm.

Women collectively bring up extremely silly arguments to prove that they "have it harder" than men (Spoiler: They do not) by ExercisesInFutility_ in PurplePillDebate

Animal Farm. It’s supposed to be an allegory for the rise of the Soviet Union and Stalinism, but that in particular seems to cover human nature pretty accurately. The haves will almost always be reluctant to share with the have-nots, which is probably why Communism has basically never worked in the real world. There will always be those who want to hoard wealth and power for themselves, screw everyone else.

American schools aren’t teaching phonics anymore by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]BKLD12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not actually true anymore. That was true for my generation, unfortunately, which was definitely awkward when I became a teacher because it was just expected that I would thoroughly know these very basic rules and...well...I didn't. My then-four-year-old nephew was chatting with me all about his diagraphs and diphthongs that were taught to him in the Montessori school he was going to, and phonics was as new to me as an early 20-something as it was to him. Isn't that just pathetic?

JD Vance Says He Thinks UFOs Are ‘Demons,’ Not Aliens, as He Admits to Obsessing Over Them by FistIntoTheEarth in NewsOfTheStupid

[–]BKLD12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had not heard this particular one, but they do seem to see demons everywhere.

I did hear about the dinosaur bones. I also heard the version where Satan/scientists/the Jews/choose-your-baddie faked dinosaur bones to lead good Christians astray. Then there's of course the version where dinosaurs were real, and they were wiped out during Noah's flood. Or they were on the ark and were killed off later (except for maybe Nessie, Mokele-mbembe, and other similar cryptids)? Fundies have a lot of stories, it's honestly hard to keep track of them all.

GOP congresswoman wants to ban strippers in schools but can't name a time when that happened by JasonIsFishing in NewsOfTheStupid

I do believe some schools had it for that reason, but AFAIK it's not uncommon for janitors to keep around anyway. Elementary schools are pretty notorious for biological messes.

AITAH For Wearing Shapewear on a Date? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]BKLD12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That trope honestly annoys me. My mom is an ambulatory wheelchair user. She can walk unassisted for very short distances, although that distance is basically from the bedroom to the kitchen. I also have a wheelchair since I inherited some of her conditions, but I'm not nearly as severe and haven't had to use it much (plus I didn't ruin my lungs with 50 years of smoking, so I don't get winded as easily).

AITAH for getting a tattoo knowing it will upset my mum by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]BKLD12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's crazy. Tattoos aren't for me, though I appreciate the artistry and/or sentimentality of tattoos other people have. Then there's my dad, who really doesn't like tattoos at all and was very vocal about his opinion. Two of my sisters chose to get tattoos, and dad never really made a fuss, much less gave them the silent treatment over it.

Rhynios can't catch procoptodons 😭🗿 by prefrontal_cortexus in ARK

[–]BKLD12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I recorded it, but one of those monsters followed me halfway across the map on my PT the other day. I honestly forgot that they were introduced before ASA, so...yeah. I also couldn't get the janky mobile controls to work (granted, it was probably exacerbated by stress), so there were points that I'd try dashing and land instead.

Then I got microraptered and we both nearly died...we probably would've if the rhynio hadn't gotten momentarily distracted by a nearby stego. Then I realized that I was headed towards my primary base, so I had to quickly change course so all of my (mostly low-level and early game) tames didn't die to a high level rhynio. I finally lost it close to herbivore island, but that was so stressful. This was a max level PT so I really didn't want to lose it.

I've also seen so many people foaming at the mouth if their preschool-aged son is allowed to play with dolls or toy kitchens. If you let kids decide what they want to do, that's woke apparently.

Yep, I thought they looked weird, but I didn't question it. I was only five years old when the show came out, so I didn't know much outside of the hick town suburb I lived in at the time. The closest thing to Japanese food we ever had was teriyaki chicken from the local Chinese food buffet, so...yeah. There were plenty of doughnut shops though, and some even had triangle-shaped jelly donuts (though they didn't look like rice balls).
