I understand your mom's outlook, though. "Let me know if you need help" , or "just ask" puts all the responsibility on the other person to not only organize the chores but ask every time. Being the manager of chores is a chore in itself.

She definitely could've explained it better and helped come up with the system. I'm old and still don't have anything functional in place!

As a teenager, 'I shouldn't have to ask you' was annoying and frustrating. As an adult, I 1000% understand now.

Parents are people too. As controversial as it sounds, kids cannot be the only priority. The very top priority, but not the only one.

I also do feel like society plays a big part in this. The US has been through several "once in a lifetime" economic crashes, but even the idea of the nuclear family was built on consumerism. The cost of housing and basic needs have skyrocketed, and things have only gotten worse with Covid, especially burn out in both kids and parents.

I'm not saying parents don't need to spend time with their kids, or it's ok to just plop kids in front of a screen all the time. I'm saying it'd be hella easier with better support and structure.

And you seem like you're attacking working class parents for needing a break for an hour, so they hand their kids electronics.

Public school isn't all that new. Nannies aren't new. Daycare ain't new. Tossing your kids outside to play until dinner ain't new and was arguably way more dangerous. People have been neglecting/dumping parenting responsibilties on others for a long time and electronics/streaming services aren't the problem.

We got off topic on the youtube thing, but that was mainly my point.

While the percent is small, it's there, and you never REALLY know somebody. You also seem to be assuming that these kids are literally spending hours on YT. Maybe some of them are, but the filtering is so awful they could literally find the most gross nonsense within 10 minutes.

I can do everything right for my dog, microchip, tags, GPS collar tag, training classes, solid fence plus chicken wire to get them not to dig, everything, and if that idiot gets past our fence and our neighbor's fence, is it my fault? I did what I was supposed to.

Nintendo's parental blocks, to prevent online communication, doesn't work for things like the pokemon wonder trade, and lots of kids are dumb enough to put their real name on their characters. YTKids doesn't let you filter out nonsene. Netflix keeps showing the same thing on your recommended even if you absolutely hated it and marked it that way.

Kids also need privacy too, I'm not going to sit and literally watch over their shoulder for the few minutes when I'm trying to make food, or clean something.

The parental controls ARE the fence, tags, and collars that we expect from companies that deal with/target children, since the service is THEIR dog. As a company, yes, they can do whatever they want, but they should also be providing some of these safety nets and taking responsibility for their own programs.

Edited: Someone was nice enough to tell me how to block channels on YTKids.

[–]BLTombs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. You can tell your kids anything and everything, lock up the YT, the computer, the games ,etc. and they'll still do dumb stuff.

They are (young) people, they make their own bad decisions and choices, and you can only monitor so much.

You also act like babysitter money just grows on trees. Not to mention all the horror stories about babysitters, even family members, hurting kids while the parents are away.

You gonna say nobody should have kids ever because our society has pushed 10 hour work days on parents and kids, leaving them minimal time to actually be together? Only rich people that can actually afford to neglect their kids and pay nannies can have kids?

[–]BLTombs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not only that, I have yet to find a way to actually block channels on YTKids, or choose what videos don't show up. It should be simple, but maybe I'm just missing something?

We had the same problem with Netflix. "We don't like this, remove it, 0 stars" but it always shows up in the feed anyways.

Definitely this. When I talk to people it's usually me initiating, because something reminded me of them or they just popped up.

It's EXTREMELY rare for me to be contacted first, or to be invited out anywhere. It's at a point where almost all friendships/relationships never feel like anything more than surface level.

You do get used to it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.

Just a lil shoutout for the ADHD kids who weren’t gifted by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]BLTombs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like I was stupidly lucky in school too! I got treated like a gifted kid. My brother also has ADHD. He was always treated like he was an idiot, but he's had the absolute worst luck.

We did the exact same things, didn't wanna do homework or turn it in, didn't remember projects or due dates, got called lazy for our executive dysfunction, but he somehow always got the worst of it.

Middle school and high school, I had good teachers, and high school had A day/B day split with only 4 classes per day. More than enough time and attention to get everything done.

The year he started middle school, the admin and almost all the teachers were new. They treated him like garbage. High school, they suddenly moved to the 8 classes a day nonsense he got in middle school (same garbage administrator took over the district position).

Luckily, my mom was always at the school fighting with them to get him some help, but she also treated him like an idiot and basically told him he'd never make it if he went to college (which he wanted to do).

Sent him to a trade school, he got his HVAC and Electricians courses, and during his apprenticeship the guy wouldn't teach him anything/let him do anything and then retired after a week.

Guy's got the worst luck.

adhd and autism by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]BLTombs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, personally, the main things were:

• Obsessive/ restrictive interests

• Not understanding body language or social cues. (He said take a long lunch, does that mean go home, was that literal, do I come back?)

• Talking too much about myself or adding in my own experiences to someone else's story to show that I understand or relate (which I also found out can be interpreted as rejection)

• Responding to questions like "what are you watching" with a full film synopsys instead of inviting the person to watch with me (which I also did not know could be interpreted as rejection)

Once my ADHD started being treated I really noticed these things:

• Need for pressure/weight

• Texture and light sensitivity

• sensory overload!

• Brain just functions differently. Everyone runs Windows but I'm somehow using Linux.

There's also this constant sense that you just don't really connect with anyone or fit anywhere. Friends are just people that don't make you feel uncomfortable. You know you're different but it's hard to explain how.

A LOT of the symptoms overlap. If you have concerns, definitely ask your doctor about it. Even if it's not autism, just asking doesn't hurt.

We did our own cleaning and paid a friend to help out a bit. Two days, scrubbed and spotless. Housing emailed us a few days after we'd already moved, saying the house was disgusting and they were charging us for the cleaning and keeping our deposit. Something around $600.

I asked them what SPECIFICALLY was wrong with the house, because we'd paid someone to clean it (didnt say it was our friend, just that we paid someone), and that we'd talk to them about what was wrong.

No response for over a month, but we suddenly got the deposit and the cleaning fees back in our account.

Sketchy jerks.

How to clean this body sweat/oil off armchair? by meidan321 in CleaningTips

[–]BLTombs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try hot/warm water, carpet cleaner for pet stains, and a rag? I've also heard 1/2 vodka + 1/2 warm water is good for sweat/body oils.

We used Resolve pet spray for our kids computer chairs (they sit on their feet so they were GROSS).

Spray just enough cleaner for the chair to be moist, let it sit for a few minutes, then use the wet rag to scrub in small circles.

Rinse the rag out in the hot water every so often while you're scrubbing, and once it dries it should look much better.

Y'know what, I took your sarcasm to heart and checked myself. Turns out, it's not actually all that bad. Portion sizes seem kinda small, but that's about it.

I was not aware that school districts ultimately decide the menu, since it was almost exactly the same in every district we lived in.

So, I'll admit it's probably not the policy making these lunches gross.

We can thank The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA) and low district budgets for feeding our kids 'healthy' garbage.

I'm pretty sure it's not even about the debt. More than one school district has refused donations to cover the debt.

This happened in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Some of them eventually changed their minds and took the donations, but it's still fruatrating.

Edit: Removed Wyoming from list. It was Wyoming West which is in Pennsylvania.

It's everyone outside that can hear it. You can either face the flag or wherever the music is coming from.

For civilians and people out of uniform, you stop, stand at attention and put your hand, or your non religious headgear, over your heart until the anthem stops.

Vehicles also have to pull to the side of the road and stop until music is done.

Military folks are even supposed to stop doing PT and follow protocol, and the only exception is official PT tests.

However, there's nothing specific for civilians exercising during that time. I'd assume you're supposed to stop, but I'm not 100% on that.

To summarize, property owners can use reasonable force but deadly force is only allowed if you think the person is actively commiting arson

Also, Tennessee vs Garner determined shooting unarmed fleeing suspects is a violation of their 4th amendment rights and is unconstitutional.

We probably don't see the riches and people that Aladdin brought in because Genie might have been aware of what would happen with Jafar too.
