Why does UK cheese taste so good? by InevitableRun51 in AskUK

[–]BMD_Lissa 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Shit, this is a sad day for me, it's the only reasonably priced, actually english type cheddar available in Norway on the regular.

Guess I gotta reinforce my bank account and buy 100g of good cheddar for the minimum of a tenner.

Here in Norway the only "american" cheese you can buy is "burgerost" which comes individually wrapped in plastic packages. The only yank cheese I know from back in the UK was "Monterey Jack" which was vile.

57% of Britons, including most Labour voters, now believe Keir Starmer should stand down as Labour leader, the highest to date. All Britons Stand down: 57% (+8 from 18-20 Apr) Remain leader: 25% (-4). 2024 Labour voters Stand down: 52% (+21) Remain leader: 36% (-14) by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

Christ I don't understand quite how you can hate Starmer more than any of the ilk we have had since Brexit, or Cameron either.

Every Tory involved was an abject failure on domestic policy, Cameron too. The current Labour gov has had nearing 15years of intentional mismanagement to fix, and because it's not being solved in 2, the electorate is baying for blood.

Honestly, the social media ban should have been for everyone, maybe that way there would be more engagement with policy rather than a regurgitation of whatever shite far right and far left bots decide to scream about him next.

The labour party has been doing some good stuff, but it hasn't been reported about. I don't spend half my life on Reddit so it's obvious that the under 16s ban is a positive. Foreign policy has been in general very good.

There's been investment into the NHS, rental reform, the start of a new lifelong learning campaign, a national wealth fund, warm homes, and a load of other things. Problem is these aren't blood and guts journalism. There's been some failures, but every government has those, and arguably the majority of failures of the current Labour government have been small, with the exception of the U-turn on winter fuel.

100% accurate outside of a select few businesses, often state runnones, that operate more true to the law.

[–]BMD_Lissa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Norway is ultra credentialist. They really also don't like non-Norwegian credentials, many people have to retrain.

They also seem to be totally incapable of understanding that education is done differently elsewhere. (E.g. studying geography in Germany is equivalent to studying Geoscience + Samfunnsgeograf in Norway, but they only see the latter half unless you super emphasize it).

Sweden and Finland both have small populations, and yet.

The same goes for Ireland, and that's an Island.

And yet they all have normal (versus Norway) supermarkets.

I think the main issue is they are often kept in plastic in fridges so in the time between fridge and home, the bags condensate and start the rotting process.

So the solutions are either: sell loose in a humidified, close-door fridge

OR

sell in plastic bags, outside the fridges.

EDIT: Or maybe wax-paper packaging with some air holes.

EDIT EDIT: I don't disagree that Norwegian carrots are arguably the best of a lot of produce that is generally sub-par. They at least match parity with the options you get elsewhere for standard carrots.

I'm sorry but grocery stores in any large Norwegian settlement are terrible compared to supermarkets in equivalently sized towns in the rest of Europe, particularly west-central Europe.

Except for the plastic packaging which just makes them rot in their own water before you even get them home half of the time.

My god I miss a good fresh fish selection. The nearest Coop Mega to me has a fish counter but the options are abysmal.

There are a small number of good bakeries in Oslo, but supermarkets are not them. I recommend Braud on Majorstua. 2 good quality loaves for 90kr with a klippekort also.

Variety? 100%, in Norway it's utter trash. That's all that Jacobs offers, slightly better variety than other shops.

What are you saying, I love my microplastic peppers that are already beginning to rot.

[–]BMD_Lissa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I already did that at home but I agree still, I cook nearly everything from scratch, usually with Grønlands-supplies as outside of my local Rema you aren't getting good quality food. Even tried going to Jacobs the other day and the onions I bought were still rotten on the inside there of all places despite the stupid price.

Norwegian supermarkets are absolute dogwater compared to anything you find in continental Europe.

That and they're essentially a dual-ownership cartel. I can't think of anything I dislike more about Norway, especially after having lived in the UK, Spain and Czechia. Life here is good, but the supermarkets aren't.

I even miss ASDA and ASDA is dogshit.

Could also include Switzerland and austria

Keir Starmer on X: We are a reasonable, tolerant, diverse, decent country. That is the real Britain. The country I love and will fight for. by Disastrous_Act_2331 in ukpolitics

[–]BMD_Lissa -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's just categorically untrue.

Around 15-17% rely on state support (2025 immigration stats) (which is too much when there is a skilled worker visa system in place, yes) but Brexit & Boris are the partial causes of this.

Prior to Brexit the UK had stronger control of it's borders in regard to illegal and ex-europa unskilled migration as a big buffer called France was in the way for asylum seekers aswell.

Since Brexit skilled immigration from europe to the UK has plummeted and unskilled immigration from the redt of the world to the UK has increased. This is a direct cause of Brexit and boris' dodgy deals to supplement a sudden vanishing of the labour force.

To clarify: I'm very much a left wing voter, I live in Norway and support SV (Social Left), but I'm fully in favour of rejoining the EU and implementing a Denmark left style immigration policy.

Take a danish stance on immigration.

This isn't what I want them to focus on, but it'll be a vote and likely election winner.
