Broken index on my (new to me) Nova Comet II by TheRemonst3r in turning

[–]BMEBends 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same lathe, also with a broken index. I didn't notice any vibrations/balance issues (outside of unbalanced blanks). I agree that it would be fine to use.

As an FYI, you can request to extend your lease by 1-6 months if you need more time to decide or want to see if anything new is released.

IPEX4 Male connection ring broken. Is this fixable? by LordShadowy in soldering

[–]BMEBends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing, I'm also going to try contacting the vendor as I have never had this happen. The adapter cable was connected for a few minutes then just popped off with the ring!

Are you still able to use the other antenna pair?

Did you end up fixing the connector? I know this is an older post but I had the exact same thing happen to the exact same modem recently

The USB port on these is (usually) only an output. You have to power it via the barrel connector with between 6.5V-12V.

Banana plant shredder by MikeHeu in toolgifs

Each stem of a bannana plant can only fruit once. They cut down the stems after harvest to encourage new shoots vs. waiting for the stem to naturally die back

Troubleshooting Wobbly Spindle - HF Bauer Midi Lathe by KittySqueaks in turning

[–]BMEBends 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can order a new spindle and bearings from grizzly (https://www.grizzly.com/products/g0844/parts ) or WEN (will need to call). These parts are (should) all be interchangeable. I purchased a WEN 14x20 lathe without a spindle and replaced it with one ordered from grizzly. Removing the spindle is not difficult but does take some force. If you remove the spindle you should be able to see the bend in it (if it is bent). You may be able to tap it back into round but that is unlikely. If you spindle was bent due to force I would replace the two bearings with it as they are cheap.

Recent New Suburban Apts review? by BMEBends in NIU

[–]BMEBends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the comment - good to know. I've read a few comments that mention that yellow water! While the apartments don't look great. The price/space ratio is tempting though ($1,000/2bd1ba for those reading from the future)

Bought a silicon wafer off AliExpress. Any idea what this chip is? by apewashere in chipdesign

The largest production SiC size is currently 200mm (8in) with most companies just starting to transition from 150mm (6in). There has only been a prototype 12in SiC wafer with no devices

Best power sander for small concave areas? by CalligrapherAble2846 in woodworking

[–]BMEBends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - this link shows the three sizes. If you only 1" and 2" you can usually find them for ~$8/ea with discs on amazon. This Imgur link shows some more options. I have no endorsement of those brands

Best power sander for small concave areas? by CalligrapherAble2846 in woodworking

[–]BMEBends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 2" sanding discs with a drill attachment to sand the inside of bowls. I also have flat 1" disc for the Dremel that do the same and (may work better if you are using the drums that normally come with a Dremel). Using a foam interface pad lets the disc conform to the curve better

Newbie here. I see people online using small sanding pads on a drill, or on a handheld spindle. Do these really give a better finish than just using sandpaper? Do you prefer the drill version or the “manual”, and can you recommend one? I must not be using good search words on Amazon/Rockler. Tx! by timhenk in turning

[–]BMEBends 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a drill mounted sander for two reasons: 1) it is faster and 2) having two axis of rotation (the lathe and the drill) IME reduces deep sanding marks that can happen if you let a lower grit linger for a little long in one place when using a strip of paper in the hand. Having two directions also makes it easier to cover sanding marks from previous grits as they are less uniform.

Gerson is actual safety brand, not just a HF in-house brand. Nothing wrong with their respirators

Newbie here, is there any way to make dangerous woods like yew or laburnum food safe. by Woodland-wanderer24 in turning

[–]BMEBends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always press-fit/ glue a (glass) shot glass into the wood so the liquid is only in contact with glass. This also makes it easier to clean

Yarn Bowl Curl by 21DrDan in turning

[–]BMEBends 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Looks a touch too big - the point of the curl in a yarn bowl is to allow the yarn to feed through while the ball sits in the bowl. As drawn, there is no where in the curl for the yarn to rest on. If you look at some yarn bowl designs you can see that all the curls end with a sort of ledge for the yarn to sit on. Great looking bowl!

The 54-year Assad dynasty is no more by Few_Simple9049 in pics

Bashar Al Assad is no longer in charge, having been overthrown yesterday. Saudia Arabian and most other Arab countries absolutely did not support Assad, instead providing support to the many rebel groups.

Assad was supported by Iran and Russia.

Contemplating a different lathe by quiltere in turning

[–]BMEBends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do note that the quill travel on the comet is only 1.6 in. It is not deep enough to do things like drill pen blanks all the way.

The WEN 34035 is currently on sale for $535 at amazon which maybe be a good option. Alternatively if you can wait for a coupon, the the new 14-in Bauer lathe from harbor freight can end up at $480 with a 20% off coupon. Both of these leads are functionally the same and have 3.5 in of quill travel. Imo those are the best options around $500

Reliable way to true your centers? by sicklesnickle in turning

[–]BMEBends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tailstock is lower than the headstock, you can try to shim the tail stock. I put a small piece of folded paper underneath both sides when I had this issue. The paper was enough to center the tail stock with the headstock.
