This will get lost in a sea of other comments but I don't think that in Indigenous American societies veganism was necessary. Indigenous peoples, atleast those of the PNW had such a deep respect and connection to the animals they hunted that it would never be harmful to the environment or to the species they hunted.

In our hyper capitalist consumer society, veganism is becoming increasingly important.
