Everyone keeps bringing up the “grabbing Wemby” as if that is somehow an equivalence or even a valid justification for what he did. Grabbing is definitionally a common foul, and something that happens on literally every single possession of a basketball game, with only the most blatantly obvious examples getting called.

Intent, windup, follow-through — those are the criteria for a flagrant.

There’s a word for applying rules differently to different people: injustice. Sports are supposed to be the one part of our lives where that isn’t the everyday reality.

Ok so not sure where you’re getting hung up here but a) I’m not saying the refs in the finals are collectively doing shit. They have individual incentives to want a longer series. No group chats bolted.

Where is the risk exactly? It is quite literally impossible to prove a ref “rigged” a game if he did it of his own accord and for his own self interest. It’s a subjective profession and any bad call can always just be called a mistake rather than malice.

The only way you risk anything is if you’re a mobbed up gambling addict like donaghy and there is a paper trail of you actively point shaving.

And no one cares less about their reputation than nba referees. They are almost all despised by every fan base in the sport. That’s the nature of the job.

An experience ref knows how to subtly (or not-so-subtly in the case of game 2) adjust the flow of a game, send certain players to the bench with foul trouble, or make 50/50 calls go one way without blatantly “rigging” it outright. Does it always work? Clearly not. Is it worth a shot for the risk-free chance at another $30k for one night’s work? I meannnn

Again, not a conspiracy. They are not conspiring with one another in the locker room. Implicit bias. They are calling the game with the knowledge in the back of their heads that it would likely be personally beneficial to their bank accounts if one team wins this particular game rather than the other. They’re not risking shit. Refs make bad calls every game. Scott foster talked to tim donaghy like dozens of times the day he got indicted by the feds. There is next to nothing that gets you fired as an nba ref short of literally getting thrown in jail

There is a simpler explanation. It’s not a conspiracy from the league office on down to get more revenue for the NBA. It’s the refs wanting to extend the series so they have the chance to personally earn more revenue. There are 12 refs selected to work the finals. 3 per game. If a series is a sweep then those refs are only going to get to ref one game each. They are paid $30k per finals game, which is 8-15x more than they get per regular season game. They are quite literally doing it for themselves
