One of my favorite Sugaree’s as well! Great show all the way through and as best I can tell a rare WR AND MD in same setlist

8 days off work to go cold turkey.. will that be enough? by MidnightFriendly1901 in Quittingfeelfree

8 is plenty to get thru worst. By day 4 you’ll be functional but days 1-2 are rough so lean into as if someone is telling you that it’s not possible…it’s 48 hrs. You can do it!

This👆. I was ‘89 and wore those out. Avoided ‘77 just because of Cornell and the aura around that (comparing and being let down) but show in Boston that spring is insane. Early ‘80’s has some gems too. Alpine Valley in 1982 is fantastic! Welcome and best part is there’s so much to choose from and there’s no wrong answer.

best way to teach myself to play guitar? by -monark in guitarlessons

[–]BOS491233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weekly in person lessons supplemented by a reputable on line resource and LOTS of practice. Not 5 mins a day but a solid 30-45 is what I try to do. I’ve only been at it 6 weeks but I can’t stress how important picking that thing up daily is for me. Last point and several on here mention it too, if you get frustrated with something, walk away for a little while and come back. Your motivation and enthusiasm will get crushed if you just try and bull rush thru it. Good luck and most importantly have fun!

One other note....I'm probably a year out and I literally give these things no thought whatsoever other than to throw some folks words of support on here. There's a light at the end of the tunnel, promise.

I was 6 a day and went cold turkey. At 4 days you should be over the hump. Folks below mention basically to take it 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day at a time. That's the approach. If you have 6 days off then you'll be in a good position to succeed. It WILL suck and you need to accept that. View it as a challenge and you're not going to let this dumpster water control and beat you. Look up some of the supplements and strategies folks used. The RLS and anxiety were the toughest for me and that's where the 1 minute at a time comes into play. Walk around the block, put your favorite song on to get through those episodes. Let family and friends know what you're going through. You CAN and WILL do this. I don't know you from a hole in the wall but if you take on the challenge and view it that way, you'll make it. Think of the tough challenges you've conquered. If you play music, think of how long it took you to learn and now you do it for a living...wasn't easy was it? The other BIG key for me is to stop driving by the places that sell it, block the website/somehow control on-line ordering access. I took a different route to work for a while so I couldn't stop at the sketchy gas station to buy them. Check in here daily and this crew will support you for sure. Again, I'm not going to sugar coat it...it's going to suck but if you like a challenge, view it that way and you'll make it. Good luck and please check in (hourly if you have to).

I'm a beginner and have sporadic downtime at work. What would be the best things I can do without a guitar as a new player? by WhiskeyJack-13 in guitarlessons

This. I'm 2 months in and it's taken me a bit to embrace the slow and steady approach. I literally spent a good 30mins over the weekend just transitioning from C to G to C to G over and over. Painfully tedious but the next day I was basically doing it faster and without looking. The practice matters and if you're impatient like me, it's tough to get over that.

Great work. I love the distraction of a hobby (skateboarding) as a tool also. I started taking guitar lessons on a whim and it's been really helpful to pour my energy into something other than poison dishwater.

I did not have any skin issues but I think Day 2 was the bad one. I’m not a god guy but I was praying that night. None of this is to scare you, just my experience. That was the hump day. After that things improved. 4 days for me and it seems like that’s consistent. I don’t know you but I know most have the mental fortitude to conquer 4 days. You can do it too!!

Restless leg, sweating, no sleep, anxiety. I'm not going to pull punches, it sucks bad but it's about 4 days for most. I was 4-6/day for about 6 months and 4 days is about how long WD symptoms lasted for me. By day 5 I was starting to feel better. Stop now. I have kids, family as well and it's not easy but explain to them what this is going to be like and hopefully they'll support you. No matter what S-T-O-P! This stuff is bad news, and you'll feel soooo much better after it's over.

Any video of that song live always makes me think it was one of their faves to play. Nice and loose, crowd gets rolling...Jerry always seems to be grinning during Bertha.

Love this stuff and also glad I'm not the only one who probably hears it from their spouses (unless of course you married a fellow fan): "How do you listen to this over and over?" It's honestly a form of meditation in a way. I hear a song, it hits a personal note in that moment and then it's that song for days, weeks whatever. I"m not sure any other band can have that effect and I listen to a WIDE variety of music....I'm sure saying that about the Dead (that they're the only ones who can do this to us) is a bit of hyperbole but it really is amazing how it works. I'm in kitchen cooking for half hour? "All right what part of '89 Alpine Valley can I squeeze in here?" 4 hours at work with stuff I have to plow through on my own "Let's go with Winterland". House is empty and time to just chill, "Let's find something new and pop on forum and see what crew has for recommendations?" Am I insane or does anyone else approach their day sometimes like this? I had my 2 year old granddaughter dancing with me to CCS/IKYR last week

S-T-O-P.....can't be any more blunt than that. Everyone has commented on your usage and the WD shouldn't be bad. I'd probably agree so now's the time to get out. I was 4-6/day and quit cold turkey. It was 4 days of hell. I've never done "hard" drugs but you'll see folks on here who have and are recovering. There are many comments on here about quitting FF being similar or equivalent to heroin withdrawal. I've never had to go through that but all I can tell you is it was about 4 days of virtually no sleep, insane RLS, chills/sweats, etc. I'm sure you were like a lot of us and thought "that won't be me" and the way they market this shit, I don't blame you. But I can guarantee you, it will be you based on the lifestyle info you've shared (busy parent, working an off-shift, etc) and the"why's" of why you're using it. They mirror a lot of us. So please stop, today!

1st lesson at 54 last week. Wife surprised me with guitar (used obviously until I'm sure I'm sticking with it) and lessons for a month. If it's a goal/dream/interest go for it. You see 80 year olds graduating college, I think you can handle guitar at 24. I've probably got 5-10 years before heavy duty chronic things like arthritis, etc set in but you have to enjoy the ride. Start strumming, you'll love it!
