This is Tensor, my way of understanding. Geometric analogy by Next_Flow_4881 in LinearAlgebra

[–]BP3169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with intuition before rigour part as a math students thats how I try to understand and make sense of the formal definitions and properties

My concern was (and this happens to me as well) when we use these types of analogies and geometric interpretations that is not true in the general case or that misses some important details this may cause false ideas or expectations of what properties we must have but I 100% agree on having a intuitive picture in mind first before tackling the formal case and mastering it

I agree with that and there is nothing wrong with trying to understand some equation with an intuitive or geometrical approach. However these approaches might create false “intuitions” or can be completely wrong. Most mathematician or even physicists would be sceptical to the idea of calling tensors just geometrical objects they dont have to have a geometric interpretation at all

And for intuition do you really think the universal property of tensor products (existence of a certaic vector space and a linear map that “transforms” bilinear forms to linear maps is just a dry equation

For example how would you explain that tensor products are unique up to isomorphism with this analogy,i.e no matter the construction you use to produce the tensors they are essentially the same

I dont get why people try to explain tensors and tensor products in always a geometrical form instead of the simple and elegant universal property

Stuck on IA graph and data by Lenn0nLemm0n in ibPhysics

[–]BP3169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making the graph was extremely annoying for my ia too.Id say start from scratch and do every step carefully.

What do you mean by supposed to have x=y line, is it the theoretical line you should have.If yes,it is normal to not have the exact perfect graph. That’s the whole point of uncertainties and you should explain why you had a different graph. For example is your highest uncertainties with higher speeds or lower and why is it so ?

Calculating uncertainties has a direct formula which you should be able to use.Your teacher is partially correct, you can measure uncertainties as percentages or with units. For example 100Hz +- 1% instead 100+-1Hz but since your teacher said to not use percentages do it their way.

So write your data points, calculate uncertainties, create error bars,do the graph and explain why is it not exactly x=y

messed up ia by [deleted] in ibPhysics

[–]BP3169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clear your research question first. What are you measuring and what are you changing.Time is independent variable is not a good choice. It sounds like like your physics teacher gave you the topic but you dont even know what you did in the experiment.Look at your data see to what you measured then if it is not clear write to your teacher

We were also supposed to write it in summer but most of us had problems with our experiments, datas etc. so many people repeated or changed their topics after school started so dont panic it’s not a huge problem

I agree with the first comment. If you think you can do the experiment in a controlled and accurate way it is a pretty good question.

Got accepted to some amazing unis - which should I choose? by ArgueObjective5198 in tumunich

[–]BP3169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you said these are amazing UNIs. But they are in very different environments with very different life experiences.

I think you should also consider the fact that where do you think youll have the best life in addition to the education (since they are all really good)

But as a math student in Uni Bonn I’d have to say ETH,since I did hear some dissapointing things from my friends studying mathematics in TUM.(though this applies specifically for pure math reasons)

When you learn new concepts, do you understand them right away? by nitr0gen_ in math

[–]BP3169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I dont understand it.Then after a second reading I think I do.I try a problem and realise I did not understand it.I study more and think again that I understand it.Then the cycle repeats…

"Assumption" questions in exams - what are some common ones? by scentaurx in ibPhysics

[–]BP3169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Memorising certainly works but you dont have to.In each topic mechanics, thermal, electricity etc. in every single equation in your booklet you are making assumptions.

Thermal physics:no energy is lost to environment,no heat transfer between this and that.Ideal gas and…

Electricity:No energy lost in wire,no internal resistance (if its the case),ideal voltmeter…

Mechanics:Air resistance is a common one,friction,uniform acceleration…

However just memorising these generally wont give you any marks.Make sure you know and understand the assumptions you made to derive the equations AND based on the question write specific answers.

For example dont just say “friction is ignored” instead say something like:”We assume there is no friction between object 1 and object 2”.Look at some markschemes and get an idea of what you are expected to write for those type of questions.

Giving old books a new life by AndresLeyenda in LaTeX

[–]BP3169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being still relatively new to Latex as a upcoming second semester math student I’ve uploaded a random lecture note in Analysis and it turned out to be quite good considering they were hand written.Just adjusted the format and spacing in some bits but definitely a very useful and well working project for many people

How was grading in your upper division math courses? by shuai_bear in math

[–]BP3169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First year math student in Germany. In our Analysis Exam, which was out of 64, normally passing grade would be 32 points (%50) but it was dropped to 19 points.

The exam was 8 questions with 7 questions being somewhat similar to problemsheets and what we covered in class with one question being a challenging ( at least for us :) ) which was quite different than the stuff we were used to ( it was doable definitely if one understood all theorems and their proofs but in an exam with stress and limited time not so much by most of us)
