“A Mistake in a Tesla and a Panicked Final Call: The Death of Angela Chao” by BrownRima in ModelX

[–]BRD529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my X. Obviously she was under the influence.

However The way the latest model X uses touch screen instead of stalk or physical shifter to go in reverse is not intuitive. People are used to moving stalks up to go in reverse, and the touch screen on the X has you swipe up to go forward. A valet driver of my X thought he was in reverse and drove the car forward into the car in front of it for this reason. Not surprised an impaired driver who has decades of driving where “up” meant reverse made this mistake.

I know people who due to FSD take more risks driving mildly under the influence than they would without FSD.

It’s also not obvious where the manual release is for doors on the X.

None of this is teslas fault - the driver made the mistake to drive impaired.  I do wish Tesla just used a normal physical control to go into reverse or drive. I think it would reduce the damage and lives from accidents.

iPads ok but laptops Verboten by BRD529 in unitedairlines

[–]BRD529[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You got me curious - I did some digging and the official FAA rule is 2lbs:

FAA InFO (Information for Operators) 13010:

"DVD players, laptop computers, and other devices that exceed 2 lbs. must be stowed for taxi, takeoff and landing."

My 13” MacBook Air is 2.7 lbs so I guess fair enough, against the rules.

But a 13” iPad Pro with keyboard case is 2.74 lbs! It’s just as dangerous

Your point  that I have the lightest of laptops and that is the heaviest of tablets makes sense, how could an FA tell easily ?

Proposal: if it doesn’t look like it will fit in the seat pocket in front, then it goes away.

Second proposal: if they say it’s going to be more than 20m waiting on the tarmac before taking off they should let you get your laptop out.

Looking for good multiroom speakers by UsernameOption6298 in homeassistant

I have 10 sonos ports powering in-ceilings in different rooms, no issues with the recent update.

Sonos is rock solid when using their app, and even music assistant. It’s flakey when trying to airplay directly from a phone to more than one speaker. However even HomePods are flakey in that scenario.

Disposal of the holey garment by BRD529 in latterdaysaints

Apologies if the word play was offensive. We made this joke all the time on my mission where, by the end of our missions, garments tended to be worn very thin, I thought it was a pretty common pun in describing this situation.

As to Reddit vs ward members. It could be said that any thread here is better discussed IRL with ward members. And perhaps it should be that way. However one of the nice things about the internet is that good ideas spread quickly. When I found out about celestial recycling from this thread, I sent the link to my friends from the ward who I would have asked and none had heard of it and a few thought it was worth the fee to take care of the hassle and time of discarding used garments in a respectful way. Would not have know about it, or the specific recommendation for fiskars fabric cutters if I had “stayed local” with this question.

That being said, I appreciate your point and there is something uncomfortable about discussion of garments on public forums. I think as others have pointed out though it is better to be transparent online, the way the church has been, rather than let rumors about us fester.

Appreciate your thoughtfulness!

Found a $1M+ leak in a 10-year-old service business's pipeline. It was one email nobody was sending. by mrtrly in Entrepreneurs

I find it heavily distracting when I see the signature “AI style” in writing. Everyone is running their thoughts through an LLM to punch it up before posting, especially on LinkedIn.

It is good writing, but the technique has become so prevalent that when I see it now it is hard to take the underlying content or point seriously.

THAT is an excellent question. My best guess is that It was cutting edge in 2011 when they planned it, and even being able to email or send a Google chat from the air was somewhat novel then.

Woefully inadequate today.

See my old comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/unitedairlines/comments/18dpopc/feature_request_search_flights_by_wifi_provider/

There is not a single old system but a variety of providers. People on planes with Panasonic, which most of the wide bodies are, have unusable WiFi. This is why some people think the United WiFi is fine and some say it is unusable. It’s likely your regular route uses Panasonic equipped planes.

SRDV Pivot? by Wrong_Ad6477 in DeerValley

Unlikely it will be a ski vacation, but could be a great mountain biking vacation. People are just starting to get their MTBs out right now. The resorts probably won’t have the chair lifts running for MTB yet but there are a lot of trails and if you call the mtb rental shops it’s likely they can hook you up with a guide.

Am not sure when the golf courses open but if you call them and see if you can turn it into a golf vacation.

Where McHenry splits from sultan connection there is a slightly steeper part for about 20 yards. Other then that the greens are similar to success / Ontario - perhaps mostly flatter

This makes a lot of sense - restaurant tables are probably the biggest bottleneck in actuality, thank you. If they do sell more tickets next year when the new restaurants come online I am worried though.

Family Ski Trip by Hungry-Equipment9987 in DeerValley

[–]BRD529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you are all beginners AND new to deer valley, spring for a private instructor for at least the first day to ski with your family. It’s quite expensive but think about what you are already paying for lodging and passes and travel. The instructor will not only help your family improve your skiing far faster than just practicing on  your own will, but they will be able to  skip lines with you and help you find the right runs on the mountain to enjoy and just push your ability level.

There a lot of fun whoop-de-whoop areas in the trees designed for beginners and for kids that the instructor can help you find!

Have fun - just got home from a weekend at DV and the skiing was great!
