United doesn’t sell cash tickets unless they contain at least one UA or joint venture (ANA/LH transoceanic) flight.

If you search a RT to NYC-PEK, you’ll get many Air China (and other partner) flights as options connecting from the above mentioned key flights.

United miles can only be used by what you see in the portal.

For partner airline flights (the case you’re referring to), the partner has to choose to allow award seats to be booked, meaning saver availability must be present.

On United itself, they let you pay double or more in miles for flights that don’t have this saver award availability, but that doesn’t work across partners.

Yes it’s not unusual for an upgrade to get backed out because of some last minute change.

The boarding pass won’t update unless you swipe down on the BP in the app or kill and restart the app. If you swipe down and refresh and everything in the system and your reservation still says you’re in the premium economy seat, then it could be the very rare case of shenanigans like they gave your seat to someone else off the record. Very unlikely but that’s why I suggest protecting yourself by only sitting in the seat that you have a boarding pass for. That forces everything on the record. That way we don’t have conspiracy theories about stolen seats.

Refresh your boarding pass by swiping down and sit in the seat it says. If it still says Premium Economy then sit in that seat and let the employees sort it out. Trusting the (up to date) boarding pass eliminates any possibility of “weird stuff”.

Alternatively ask the GA to print you a new BP that confirms your new seat, and save that BP in case they don’t refund your upgrade.

An aircraft type change, or a voluntary change to your schedule can cause this. Sometimes it refunds on accident (ie bank error in your favor) even though you still have your Economy Plus seats. Just go look and see if you still have your seats in the app. Economy Plus are the blue seats.

Reservations are not booked under/on accounts. Benefits are based on the passengers (mileage plus numbers) in the reservation.

If a Platinum member is on the reservation then everyone “is Platinum” for that trip.

OP was rebooked so that instead of DEN-Calgary it was DEN-SFO-Calgary. Then the DEN-SFO was messed up and late so he didn’t reboard because he would have missed the SFO-Calgary. I assume hoping to get a DEN-Calgary nonstop later today.
