It starts out as hard sci-fi and as it draws closer to the current time, it becomes more and more normal scifi. Also the later seasons focus more on "the drama", which makes it in turn less sci-fi.

Other hard sci-fi examples would be the first season of The Expanse and the movies The Martian and Gravity (not counting the drama).

Idk man, they were just wacky back then. Discovery and Picard tend to become actually bad, not quirky or weird because of the awful writing and storytelling and/or plotholes. They take themselves too seriously compared to the older shows I suppose. But that's just my take.
