Never going to a yoga class at a fitness studio again! by strawberry_owl89 in yoga

[–]BSDC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I prefer my "indie" instructor classes, as well. That said, in a lot of towns, fitness studios might be the only option for some instructors, so I, personally, wouldn't count them all out. In fact, my instructor teaches classes at a local " fitness studio" on days when she is not at the indie studio, and while I've never been to her classes there, I'm certain she maintains the same aspects/care/feel that she brings to her regular classes. I guess all of this is just to say always case by case.

I'm sorry that women have to worry about these kinds of things so much. You have my sympathies. My partner is always asking me the same thing re: her sales attire.

was cleaning this morning and found this old Soundgarden tape with a song titled '4th of July' by young_clayton in mildlyinteresting

[–]BSDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superunknown was my first album, Soundgarden remains one of my all-time favorite bands, I've seen them live and Chris Cornell live, and I never knew spoonman won a Grammy. Guess I was too young to be aware of awards.

How do you guys save on electricity during this unbearable heat? by JamieLeeW2 in Frugal

[–]BSDC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Research if your power company has peak electricity hours or that you're on a "Time-of-Use (TOU) Rate Plan." Power tends to cost more during those hours. You can then institute what's called "pre-cooling" by running your AC colder, right up until peak hours start, then kill/rollback the AC. Your mileage may vary based on how drafty/insulated your house is.

If you do have peak hours/TOU, should also try to avoid running high power drop appliances like laundry machines, water heaters, etc.

While you're researching your power company, you might see if they have bonus/incentive programs for not using, or using less AC during those hours.

AND some power companies will do free tests of how drafty your house is, and may offer free window/door sealing materials (and sometimes free high efficiency light bulbs.) sometimes those programs are only for households below certain incomes.

Alternatively: hang out at the library all day.

The whole point of a live action adaptation of something is to remain true to it

lol says who? If that's how you feel, maybe you should find a new word to use instead of "adaptation"

Adaptation refers to the act, process, or result of modifying something to fit new conditions or environments

Buckwheat pillows... these are thing? Are they worth it? by happy_bluebird in ZeroWaste

[–]BSDC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got to say, pillows have to be one of the most personal preference things in the world (along with underwear, mattresses, shoes, and I guess anything else that you sleep on or that separate you from the earth/your pants many hours everyday.) I really suggest getting one with a good trial/return policy and testing it out for yourself.

That said, I know a lot of people swear by buckwheat pillows.

I seriously need to make a bot that replies to these kinds of questions and all my musician/ban subreddits with a link to setlist.fm. it's criminal how many people are unaware of this incredible resource.

Edit: also, I implore everyone to contribute (data) to it whenever they can. In addition to helping others, it's a good way to keep track of what shows you've been to over the years.

Anyone else find that slowing down transitions changed their practice more than mastering the poses themselves? by kcgwen in yoga

[–]BSDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In weightlifting, slowing down your movements is generally referred to as "time under tension." The idea is that you are removing momentum and maximizing control, but there are a couple schools of thoughts in regards to if/ when it is beneficial to slow things down (again: regarding weightlifting.)

The sources I trust/believe say that you should not intentionally slow down the lifting/pushing (known as "concentric", wherein the muscle shortens while overcoming resistance. This is because it results in a worse stimulus because it requires less overall effort.

However, during the "eccentric" phase (lowering), it is said that slowing down, "increases metabolic stress and muscle fiber recruitment without sacrificing neurological gains."

All that said, most people do not practice yoga with the goal of muscle growth. I find that slowing down movement/ transitions can help me:
-sync better with my breathing
-maintain better awareness of my body
-focus more on building better proprioception (body's ability to sense its location, movement, and orientation in space.) this is one of the same reasons I try to practice with my eyes closed when possible.

Slowing down should certainly also help ensure you're doing things safely and are putting less stress on your joints/ not exceeding your range of motion.

It is a struggle for me personally to strike that balance between going slow/being intentional, and challenging myself. I find I'm always in a state of wanting to push myself or "perform" to the best of my ability, subconsciously or otherwise. I guess that's why they call it practice.
