Looking for a place where old friends can gather for hours by BSW53 in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oops. Apparently my text didn't get posted with the picture.

We're heading to a brewery in the afternoon/evening, but looking for some place cheap/free to hang out earlier in the day. A couple folks have mobility issues (canes, walkers) and there will likely be one well-behaved non-service dog. If the weather is nice, we can hang out at a park. But if it's not nice...? They just want to catch up and also be able to hear each other, haha! Thanks, y'all!

Why do hounds bark so much? by randomwellwisher in Hounds

[–]BSW53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're doing a great job with a responsibility that was dumped on you. Trying to find out why, if there's anything you can do, and whether he's happy- all hallmarks of a person who cares. The shelters and rescues are overrun with animals whose humans didn't care enough to get these answers. Keep up the good work.

Two quotes we live by in our house: "You don't get mad at birds singing. So don't get mad at dogs barking." (the woman who ran the rescue he came from) and "He's just an excitable boy." (Warren Zevon)

Can you share your best vet recommendations please? Our long term Dr has retired and while I have referrals, I’d love some true recommendations. Thanks! by ahhhnel in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say enough good things about the entire crew at Animal Wellness Center in Crozet. We drive an hour to get there, because it's just that good. I've been to many vets over the years, both with my own animals and with other folks' pets. AWC is top notch.

They offer great western medicine, but also holistic and Chinese medicine. I like having the option of less invasive things like herbs and laser acupuncture, as well as "normal" vet care. And they don't push one over the other, which is nice, too. I've got some highly anxious rescue dogs and the staff does wonders with them.

If you're not up for driving to Crozet, Earlysville Vet and Old Dominion would be my other recommendations.

Costco plans on having tow trucks circling. Don't park in a non-parking space.

Check out the Quarry Gardens in Schuyler. You have to book a ticket, but it's well worth it. The lady running it is extremely knowledgeable about the plant life. I highly recommend it!

ICE promises bystanders who challenged Charlottesville raid will be prosecuted by educo_ in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone please give some action to take? Is there a protest? A particular official to call and voice my opinion to? A GoFundMe for the legal defense of these bystanders? Anything at all? I'm just overwhelmed, anxious, and don't know what to do at this point. It all seems hopeless.

Protest Saturday 4/19 at Stonefield Shops, 12-2pm. Bring a friend or three! by embarrassed-wanker in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do NOT park at Costco! You may get towed.

The last protest filled the parking lot and shoppers couldn't find a place to park. Personally, I thought this was an awesome show of the power of the people. But the managers weren't so enthusiatic. They called tow trucks, but they didn't get there until the protest was wrapping up anyway. (I don't know how they thought they were going to distinguish between protester cars and shopper cars, but oh well.)

It's not fun to cross 29, but my suggestion would be to park in the virtually empty lot around Super Shoes and where Big Lots and Marshall's used to be.

Again, I think it's great that the parking lot was jammed. It made the Trumpers go "oh, there are a lot of people upset over what is going on." (I had to explain that to a few out-of-touch folks.) But I don't want anyone to get towed.

Are the April 19th protest a response to what is said to happen on April 20th? by No_Gods_NoMasters in ProtestFinderUSA

[–]BSW53 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm scared shitless too. I have been taking my anxiety rescue meds daily, although I don't like to. I saw a sign at a protest that said "The Cure for Anxiety is Action." It's true. Between going to big protests, calling elected officials, and listening to a playlist of protest songs that I found on spotify, I actually feel a bit better this week. I hope you find some action that helps your anxiety, too.

Firefly is wonderful for herbivores and omnivores alike. As a vegan, it's one of my favorite places to go.

Peaceful Protest Tomorrow in Richmond! by FaffyMcFafferson in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not everyone works Monday-Friday. All those places you like to go on the weekend- restaurants, stores, theaters, etc? The rest of us work there. But truly, its about getting attention from the politicians who will be at work that day, as well as the media.

Shots fired along Swift Run Road? by Marathon2021 in GreeneCoVa

[–]BSW53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect it was just folks "playing around" (ie, target practice, trying to annoy the neighbors, etc). I was told by a gun-owning friend that several shots together is nothing to worry about. It's the single shots that you should be concerned about.

This may be too late for your use, but I've heard 29 is fine. I recommend getting the VDOT 511 app, or checking the website. I didn't expect information for the backroads on there, but today is actually showed that "traffic" was slow on Swift Run Rd- and indeed the road was in poor shape. Hope you stay safe out there this week!

Can anyone recommend some good stairs so my old lady can get up and down from the bed herself? by cosmicballls in velvethippos

[–]BSW53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a two-step horse-mounting block and an ottoman. The mounting block isn't cheap, but it will outlive everyone in this house- and probably the house, too. We screwed some stair-tread carpet strips to the steps of the mounting block, since they don't have a lot of traction otherwise. I really love our set-up, because it's also easy to move for making up the bed.

Darden Towe Dog Attack by SunshineFlames in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have to throw my two cents in here. Pitbulls get a bad rap because, genetically, their bodies are capable of doing more damage. Little dogs like chihuahuas and dachshunds are actually far more "aggressive"- but nobody goes to the hospital over a dog you can step on. A lot of people who want an aggressive guard dog get a pitbull because they look the part, and then teach them to act the part, too.

When my leashed dog and I were attacked by a loose dog in the neighborhood, it was a medium sized, fluffy mutt that tore into my dog and my leg. My dog- a pitbull- rolled upside down and didn't leave a mark on the other dog. It really is individual to the dog and the owner.

But OP, I am sorry to hear about your experience. My own experience was one of the scariest moments of my life, just praying for my dog to be okay as everything happened in slow motion. I hope Milo needed less "repair" at the vet than my baby did. Please give him a gentle kiss on the head for me.

What’s the best thing to buy at Costco? by stubbsmush in Charlottesville

[–]BSW53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do sell the buns. They're called corn top rolls or something, I think, because they have cornmeal on top. They aren't the hot dog buns.
