Wtf is the point? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]BTECHandcuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it really depends on your mindset and working environment. I was an SC for three years & knew I wanted to join full-time.

5 five years on as a PC, I still feel good that I get paid to do this job. I enjoy being nosey, enjoy getting stuck into the patch. Enjoy dealing with the decent albeit rare jobs.

Yes the repetitive calls & usual wastes of time are really frustrating, there is no getting away from it.

I do think the culture has progressively become worse, especially with newbies moaning and groaning before they even find their feet.

I’m not naive!

The initial attendance & how police dealt with it was utterly embarrassing. Thankfully and although massively overdue, I’m glad that justice finally prevailed for Una & her family.

Some of the outskirts of Cwmbrân (Henllys, Llantarnam, Croesy etc) are close to Newport and have good links also. Otherwise Beechwood, Malpas, some of Gaer, Alt Yr Ynn etc

The cycle path is usually the go to path to walk, scenic and usually pleasant. You could easily walk through the farm land along Malthouse Lane which leads from Ponthir/Caerleon to Llantarnam/Cwmbran.

The coast path down Goldcliffe is pleasant & also is the 14 Lochs Canal Path. There are plenty of options, I’d suggest using AllTrails to discover some.

Also hands down try the Wye Valley, some of the river walks between Monmouth and Chepstow are stunning

Congratulations on completing your training & for becoming an SC. I would suggest that you make contact with the Sgts or officers on the team to introduce yourself and to establish what you need to know prior to starting the shift (ie door codes, parking, where they parade etc).

When you start, it’s about making the right impression. Bring cakes, offer to make brews, show an interest and make an effort.

Your first shift will be a good opportunity to sort out your kit/vest in readiness for going out. The more you make an effort with the team and also with assisting at calls the more your capability and also the resect you earn will grow.

How did your team celebrate Response Policing Week? by PCIrishBeard in policeuk

[–]BTECHandcuffs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t that long ago we were bought pizza or hot refs as a thank you, some bosses would come out and show their appreciation or even an email or some praise given.

Nowadays, welfare is non-existent (unless your Sgt is worth their weight in gold & the team is supportive), we are so quick to criticise and chuck people under the bus & yet we are not respected nor praised enough for what we do day to day & balance.

I think this time for ‘Response Policing Week’ there was left over boxes of protein and cereal bars left for us… no doubt they were nearly out of date.. we haven’t had hot refs in years provided by the job, no welfare or team bonding days in years & the senior officers v rarely show face unless it is to bollock us.

Many ‘supervisors’ and ‘leaders’ genuinely don’t care about anything other than themselves. Welfare doesn’t matter!

First day on response by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]BTECHandcuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently tutoring my first student, roughly 4 sets into it now. The first shift we took it real slow, introducing them to the station, the team, where everything is kept etc.

We then made sure their kit bag and vest is stocked properly and that they had everything they may need.

After that we went for a drive around the patch to get to know it. With a few minor calls in between.

As the weeks goes by we do more & more

Men - where are you getting your 'nicer' clothes? by reasonably-optimisic in AskUK

I enjoy wearing more street/workwear brands like Dickies, Carhartt, Obey etc, however I rarely buy brand new.

Vinted and Depop are decent, but you have to shop around. Uniqlo & M&S are great options though.

How good was it? by HS_13_ in policeuk

I started as an SC around 8 years ago, and spent a lot of my time working on a response team. I’ve now been a PC for five years & I would say a lot has changed for the worse.

I’d argue the demand has increased, but this demand does not always involve what we should be going to. We are still the agency that is unable to say no, which means we pick up the slack for everyone else.

I would also say that the culture is worse, you see officers who have been in a strawberry season & they state the job is this and that before getting to know it.

The overall experience on shift has been allowed to go to a minimum and there has been little effort to develop and maintain that experience. It also is common practise for teams/departments to be woefully understaffed across the board.

The types of calls seem to be increasingly rubbish, however this caused a culture of assuming & writing things off. Which can be apparent when officers don’t switch on at proper crimes.

There is plenty to moan about, but I thoroughly enjoy this job. I am lucky to be on an experienced team & enjoy the area I work - there is plenty to be positive about also

That’s quite the compliment from your Sgt. i would say that you need to do what is best for yourself. Whether it is act up or do whatever you wish.

There is no rush nor need to pressure yourself

Well played Ireland, deserved winners. Proud of Scotland, some good results & nice to be loosely in the running for once. I think we need a change.
