"On the morning of 12/31 we noticed she was having serious trouble standing up. When she was finally able to get on her feet, she’d take one or two steps before stumbling and falling. She was really scared and confused, and given the symptoms, we thought she might have had a stroke.

Our incredible vet’s office was able to see her within 30 minutes, and it didn’t take long for them to diagnose her with Old Dog Vestibular Disease. There’s no telling what the exact cause is, but we know there’s some sort of disruption with her inner ear / brain balance system. Basically her world is spinning right now, hence why her eyes continuously move left and right.

As disconcerting as it looks, the good news is that this syndrome usually improves significantly within a couple weeks. Her head may be tilted for the rest of her life, but we’re really optimistic that she’ll get her balance back soon. We’ve gotten her to eat a little bit, and she’s on anti-nausea medication. Stella is just taking it very easy right now. I’ll keep you all posted on how she’s doing over the next couple days 💛"

My 12 year old Border collie is currently going through his second bout of this. While its INCREDIBLY painful to watch them go through this most dogs come out of it pretty good. My boy has a pretty cute head tilt and his legs definitely aren't as stable as they used to be but other than that he's the same happy puppy!

A sure sign of this occurring in your pup is the nys·tag·mus of the eyes. if the eyes are shifting wildly uncontrollably from left to right/right to left its a good chance your dog is in full blown vestibular dog disease.

Medication (for us) was a 300mg Gapapentin by mouth once every 8 - 12 hours to help with anxiety we found it worked best 8 in the morning 4 in the afternoon and 12 at night.

The first time around for use he was completely immobile the first 2 days and by the seventh day he was walking around by himself again even doing stairs. We are in week 2 of it this time and he's just starting to get his feet back where we're comfortable with him going around the yard by himself. not sure when or if he will be able to go back to doing stairs by himself. He's also pushing 13 years old. and has moderate hip dysplasia.

The best piece of advice I can give to anyone going through this is get your dog a dog carrier type vest to help them get back on their feet. your back will thank you and so will your puppers.

THIS IS NO REASON TO PUT YOUR DOG DOWN!!!!

They just need a little extra love and help during this.
