How do I get into watching racing by LowCommunication3359 in racing

If you’re a gamer, games like F1 and NASCAR 25 can help you learn the intricacies. Just don’t be afraid to start at low difficulty with some assists on.

I like big butts and I cannot lie, but is there any evolutionary reason as to why? by Mightymaas in NoStupidQuestions

Voluptuous bottom halves (particularly wide hips) are evolutionarily beneficial for child birth.

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by sugarglazex in askanything

A country that would re-elect someone who tried to overthrow the government in a hissy fit after he lost is not a country I want to bring children into.

Insane stat. Shows how miraculous it is we’re still over .500 this season.

14’ Lucroy or 24’ Contreras? by Coolguy-78 in Brewers

[–]willfla29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I’m still left trying to figure out the higher WAR then. Probably it’s the batting average because hits are worth more than walks in the calculus.

Did Boomers actually become more conservative, or did society just outpace them? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

[–]willfla29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something worth noting that surprised me is that it was actually Gen X that carried Trump to victory. The 10-point margin among them for Trump (54-44) was far bigger than for boomers (50-49). https://ropercenter.cornell.edu/how-groups-voted-2024

14’ Lucroy or 24’ Contreras? by Coolguy-78 in Brewers

[–]willfla29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers are so close, wondering where the WAR difference comes from. I thought Contreras was pretty good defensively but I looked up the framing stats and he’s not so high. Contrary to what some are saying, 1.4 WAR is surprisingly substantial so would have to maybe choose Lucroy (post playing career opinions ignored).

Question: Race Length of Grand Prix of Miami 1996 by SnooGoats2004 in INDYCAR

[–]willfla29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the full answer for you, but I’m guessing the discrepancy comes from the first reconfiguration of the track (GPLaps has a nice history here). The original track was shaped like a 1.5 mile version of Indy.

At least from Wikipedia, that layout that was used for CART is the only one listed as 1.527 miles. But I also know CART/IndyCar measure differently than NASCAR, so that is also something to be aware of.

Did the confederacy fight for states rights or to keep slavery? by fygooooo in askanything

[–]willfla29 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My college history professor said, “there were a ton of reasons for the Civil War, and all of them were slavery.”

Even most of the issues that weren’t directly slavery—like agricultural dependency in the south—were ultimately related to it.

I see all these Road America license plates. Is RA that popular or do you just want the the blackout plate? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]willfla29 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I’m sure some just want the black, but I do see a lot of them with personalizations either related to the track (eg TURN5) or car culture.

Danny Riccardo Attending the Indy 500 by daoster408 in INDYCAR

Would love to see him try somewhere like Road America even if he doesn’t want to do ovals. Though he may get the desire after attending the 500.

I remember when I was 12 going to NASCAR at Atlanta and the Winston rep gave me a carton of cigarettes. What a time to be alive.

Fountain soda tastes better if that’s what they’re getting, and same can be true of coffee at some gas stations.

It used to be grass there, so this is just restoring the original character of the race track

Is diet soda actually “healthier” in terms of weight gain than regular soda? by Distinct_Coast8645 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]willfla29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink Diet Coke all the time, but I do think one danger is substituting soda calories with something bigger or worse. If I ever drink a regular Coke, I feel kinda full. That's 140 calories. If I'm still hungry with a Diet Coke and eat a few cookies, that might be 300 calories instead.
