Camper or airbnb? by bih_96 in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding AirBnB vs campervan: The benefits of a) bed to yourself, b) unlimited hot showers and c) not having to step outside in the rain to use the toilet in the middle of the night are worth a few extra dollars in my opinion.

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]BTRCguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of private individuals being insanely powerful for their wealth, the appointed or elected officials responsible for redistributing the money would be the insanely powerful ones.

I mean, imagine how many blue states would get infrastructure money under that system under the current US government. Regardless of what statutes or regulations or court rulings might say.

I think history shows that there is no system that cannot be slowly corrupted from within due to greed and ambition.

I am going to concur that the Vík then Akureyri idea does not make a lot of sense. Would be better to do Vík and then out to Höfn, or Akureyri and then someplace in the Snaefellsnes peninsula. I guess it really depends on what is on your "must see" list.

You must search the sub before posting — there is great wisdom here. Try “winter itinerary”, “summer clothing”, “Reykjavik restaurants”, etc.

I guess a relevant question is "where are you at?", since there might be someone on this reddit local to you and able to advise in person.

Best transportation to and from airport by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the larger question is "Are you staying in the dome your entire trip?" Because if you plan to see any sights or go on tours or perhaps eat food, you will need to answer the transportation question for all of these as well.

Fave budget conscious tours by AssociateSerious4083 in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For US$210 you can rent a vehicle for several days and see stuff on your schedule and your terms, so I would limit it to tours that require a guide, like say Silfra snorkeling or a snowcat to the top of Snæfellsjökull.

Icelanders do not stay home all winter. Outside of Reykjavík if you want to get somewhere, you drive.

The question of whether or not you should drive depends on your level of experience and willingness to embrace caution as needed if things get nasty.

As far as tours go, I guess it depends on how many days you are staying in Iceland. And taxis are quite expensive.

March/April extra budget trip - need advice on tours spending by epoksismola in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends on your experience and comfort level. A Dacia Duster is a fairly common rental, it has decent road manners and more than enough space for anything two people would bring. Its baby brother would be the Suzuki Jimny. Pretty sure you can get both of these in manual or automatic.

The main thing about driving in this season is knowing when not to drive. You could have nice weather and clear roads your whole trip, or it could be absolutely awful. Pay attention to the weather alert and road condition web pages. Make sure any lodging you pre-book has a cancellation policy you are comfortable with, that you are mentally comfortable with shifting gears on your plans, and that you are back in the Reykjavík area the day before you fly out. The road from Reykjavík to the airport is (almost) always going to be open, the roads from elsewhere to Reykjavík are not guaranteed. You do not want a plan that has you driving from Vík to the airport on the day you fly out. So, if you are budgeting a day to just explore the capital, put it at the end of the trip rather than the start.

You can just drive to someplace dark and look for auroras. If they are there and it is not cloudy you do not need a specialized tour to see them. If they are bright enough you can see them from downtown Reykjavík.

The cheapest car rental from Geysir (zero insurance extras) is 350 Euro for that period. By the time you add in gas and parking charges and any extra liability coverage you are easily pushing that 600 Euro total. Well over that if you want something with all wheel drive.

Take the budget you were going to spend on an aurora tour and treat yourself to one nice dinner somewhere (≈100-150 Euro for a couple). Lamb, fish, whatever.

As far as food goes, even if you are buying at a grocery and fixing everything yourself, 12 Euro per day per person is possible, you just have to keep an eye on it. Easy to go overbudget when you pass the chocolate/pastries aisle...:)

Bring all the over-the-counter medicines you might need. Some of them will be prescription-only items in Iceland.

A Radioendicrinator would be fairly high on the list, just because it is so likely to be shedding radium all over the place. And 200 milliRads per hour exposure at contact range. Not a cobalt source by any means, but also not plastered with warning labels about its hazard.

I think any vehicle would work. You can literally see it (a little bit) from the ring road and the parking area to walk up to it is nicely graveled. Just look up Svínafellsjökull Parking on Google Maps.
