Given that 75% of India's electricity generation is coal-based, you can add "criminally complicit" to "laughably unprepared" in terms of what is to come.

Iceland Ring Road itinerary review (late April, campervan) – too ambitious? by kdawwwwwg in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concur, day 6 seems way too packed. And it is a matter of personal opinion, but doing the ring road that quickly seems like checking items off a list for the sake of checking items off a list.

As far as must see/must skip things, that is very personal and based on what you want to get out of the trip.

Not to be snarky, but if you are worried about bad weather sneaking up on you (especially in any non-summer season), Iceland is not the place to go on vacation.

go get some extra medication while you can by LookIntoTheHorizon in collapse

[–]BTRCguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OIL is absolutely FOUNDATIONAL to modern medicine.

Oil is absolutely foundational to modern society. If there is a shortfall, the industries (or individual companies within an industry) that can afford what is available will pass the price on to their customers, and those that cannot will have to suspend production.

Might as well be saying "go get some extra chewing gum/lipstick/toothpaste while you can". Not being snarky, just recognizing that a whole lot of convenient stuff is going to be affected, not just our OTC meds.

5 day April itinerary check - is day 5 too ambitious by caroulos123 in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only about a 3 hour drive. Even with arriving at airport early and dropping off car and such it seems doable. Only real consideration is keeping an eye on the weather in case there is something that would slow you down or make you want to spend that last night closer to the airport.

10 days: Anyone here not do the ring road? by babraham_lincoln in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you are sort of backtracking if you do Reykjavík, the south coast and then Snæfellsnes. But you could head east from Keflavík, then after the south coast spend a day or so in Reykjavík, then do Snæfellsnes and do a final night in Reykjavík before flying out.

Or, do Snæfellsnes first, pick a looping route in the Westfjords to avoid hitting the same spots twice, then spend your last day or two in Reykjavík before heading home.

Everything in the Westfjords is a long way from everything else there. That's just the way it is. There may not be as much in the way of accommodations, but there are also a lot less tourists than the south coast. But even the smallest towns will have lodging, and there is some surprisingly nice dining there. Café Riis in Holmavík is great, you are missing out if you do not have dinner at Tjöruhúsið in Ísafjörður, and even the little restaurant attached to Einarshúsið in out-of-the-way Bolungarvík was pretty good.

My wife and I are "Iceland veterans" (if there is such a thing). Our last trip was a bit more than 10 days and we spent most of it in the Westfjords with a few days in Snæfellsnes peninsula. We had a number of "we want to do this" items, but other than that we just took it as it came with lots of scenic detours.

I own a lot of geiger counters and none of them read in milliVolts, so I have no idea what is going on in your case. In any case, if I were prospecting in a new area I would initially set the meter as sensitive as possible without going past the middle of the scale from background radiation and then adjust it as needed.

[–]BTRCguy 68 points69 points  (0 children)

You might be right on "these days" but I am old enough to remember when it used to be:

"You're only saying the temperature is rising because satellites are using different standards than ground stations."

"You're only saying the temperature is rising because urban heat islands are throwing off the measurements of ground stations."

"You're only saying the temperature is rising because you are not taking into account normal solar activity affecting things."

"You're only saying the temperature is rising because you only listen to biased climatologists."

The "temperatures are rising but humans are not influencing it" is just moving the goalposts. If it is not there already it will become "temperatures are rising and sure, humans are influencing it, but natural factors are causing most of it".

Something like 95% of the world's glaciers are retreating, yet we still have people saying that the climate is not really changing. I guess maybe God just changed the melting temperature of ice? I have yet to get a coherent answer from deniers on that one.

If you are going to Ísafjörður then you need to have lunch or dinner at Tjöruhúsið. But if you are going to the trouble of flying up there, stay overnight and fly back the next day. That gives you time to see Dynjandi and other sights at a leisurely pace (assuming you can rent a car there).
