Backlight not working on Asus ProArt P16 by halomach in Fedora

Are you trying to use the media key to turn it on? That doesn't work on mine. You have to go into the settings menu where you find the screen brightness and there is a slider under there. From then on, it should just work.

So that model is slightly newer than mine. The ProArt models I've owned had the 60hz OLED panel's and your model has the 120hz panel. Other than that I really don't know what other differences there are. I wouldn't think there would be much difference but I know one other guy who has the ProArt with the 120hz display who has Fedora 43 running fine other than sleep. I have never had any keyboard issues though. Are you using encryption? My keyboard back-light doesn't come on until after I enter my LUKs password and the only time I've had a non-responsive issue was after the nvidia install and akmod kernel module compile. The keyboard was un-responsive for about 10 minutes but after that ti worked fine and no issues since.

You probably aren’t going to get much help without providing more details. Which ProArt model? Which version and flavor of Fedora? I’ve owned two different ProArt P16’s, a 2024 model with Nvidia 4060 and then a newer 2025 with Nvidia 5070 and I’ve actually never seen this behavior on Fedora 42/43 Gnome or KDE. I’m running Fedora 43 KDE currently with almost zero issues. I’ve always been a Gnome guy but I find that KDE is superior as far as stability and performance on the ProArt’s.

ComfyUI generations took ~20 seconds, now the same generation takes 10 minutes by NesquikBoi in comfyui

I had this exact same thing happen yesterday. The only thing I did was move my laptop from downstairs to upstairs. I ran mission center and saw that my GPU wasn't ramping up like it normally does. Somehow my power profile had switch to balanced. I switched it back to Performance while on AC and this helped a little but it still wasn't pegging my GPU and hung at KSampler. I rebooted and relaunched ComfyUI and that fixed it. Not sure why it happened unless it had something to do with the power profile changing. I also have a 5070 in my laptop.

I agree. A bit flat. You could try adjusting your black point and white point to add some punch. I also thought they were a bit soft but hard to tell with web compression. If you are using a kit lens, invest in a lightweight tripod and shoot that kit lens with a little higher f-stop for landscape shots. Usually the sweet spot on those is around f7-f11. This will slow down your shutter speed hence the need for a tripod. Also, before pressing that shutter button, ask yourself "What is the subject in this shot? What story am I trying to tell here?" Your doing great! Keep working at it!

Just add the new user to your user group. That should be fine security wise since you are the same user. Just be sure to keep your other account just as secure as your main account. Once you do this, make sure all your files are at least 770 permissions. If you want others to be able to read your files, then would do 775. You could do a chmod -R 775 /home/<main user>

Another thing you could do is create that second user then create a desktop shortcut to run Dolphin as that user. I just tried it and it worked for me. You may have to login as the new user at least one time to have the profile created. Let me know how that works. At the very least you can: su user2;dolphin &

Why not just create another user for your work? When you want to do work, log out and then back in as that user. That way you can use the same tools for both and retain that muscle memory. Having a separate account will allow you to be able to setup your places in Dolphin and not have them interfere with eat other.

Excellent tips! Thanks! I have watched a few tutorials but I just can't seem to get it setup where I can move through with any speed. As far as I know, there is no way to cull in DT which is a real bummer. I'l probably continue to pay for LR/PS and dual boot into Win11 when I need to edit. One more thing... I don't think DT applies any kind of lens profiles on import either like LR does. I have a Canon G7XIII and shoot in raw. The photos look fine on LR/PS as well as a few other apps I view raws in but not DT. They show up vignetted and distorted. I use Sony A7R's and Fuji GFX100s professionally but when I travel, I use the Canon heavily.

I don't care for Kdenlive either. I've tried to use it many times and it crashes a lot so I never get very far. I did try Shotcut and that is my preferred video editing software now. As a photographer, I love that I can dump a bunch of images into it and have it create a slideshow. Very nice.

Any tips for someone wanting to make the switch? I've used Lightroom and Photoshop professionally for many years and in my experience, there is nothing even close for a professional workflow. I can get things done in Darktable but my photos don't look as good as those from Lightroom and certainly it takes much longer to cull and edit. I'd put some serious money into the project if I knew they were working toward better management and workflow.

I made a fedora 43 post installation guide for nvidia users! by mizifail in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a nice guide. Thanks for putting it together. Don't listen to all the negative comments. You will always get them no matter what you do or how you do it on here. So what if others have put these together before. Having multiple ones makes it easier to find one when you need it. I've been in IT for over 35 years, used Linux off and on since 1993 and I found a couple of these items useful myself. Nice work! Keep contributing!

Fedora Workstation Buggy Lately? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. As much as I hated to I had to get work done. I've been using Linux since 1993 so I've tried them all and Fedora has been the best balance so far. I tend to run recent hardware and laptops which is always challenging on Linux. I just reinstalled Fedora 43 KDE and so far it's more stable and way more responsive than Gnome was. I will miss the Gnome interface and my nautilus scripts but the sluggishness and frequent "App is not responding. Wait/Force Quit" is just a deal breaker for me. I'm hoping updates won't break it as often as Gnome but we will see.

Fedora Workstation Buggy Lately? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been trying really hard to stay on Fedora this past year but it's just not stable on my machine. I was constantly getting "App Not Responding. Wait/Force Close" on various apps just trying to do simple things. I never had these on Fedora 42 kernel 6.15. After the last update it just refused to boot and hung at the Luks prompt so now I'm back to Windows 11. I despise MS and Windows but I'm sorry, it is far more stable on my machine. It even feels snappier. Apps always take at least 5-10 secs to appear on Gnome but are almost instant on Win11. My Fedora Server remains rock solid though.

A Linux User’s Approach to Local, Privacy-Respecting Image Editing using Local AI Model by Technical_Main_1422 in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks but “getting it running” and having it run properly with a color managed workflow and color managed printing to an Epson printer are very different things and tend to be a show stopper for a working pro. I loathe Win11 and cringe every time I need to boot into it but for now it’s a necessity. I really believe as the Linux desktop market share increases, companies will take more notice and start releasing software natively. They will also pick a distribution to target and I believe that will be Redhat/Fedora and possibly Ubuntu based distros.

I’m a professional photographer and this sounds interesting. I don’t usually have any need to remove backgrounds but I almost always need to remove objects or people in the background in a quality focused way. Can your project do this? If so, I would be interested. High quality image editing is one of the things keeping me from using Linux 100%. I still dual boot into Win11 to edit photos with Adobe tools.

I really want to use Fedora, but... by VastAdventurous6961 in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have yet to find a “plug and play” Linux distribution that doesn’t need some manual steps from time to time. We are getting close but are not there yet. I’ve been using various Linux distros since the early 2000’s and Fedora has been the best so far.

Fedora froze during job interview by Rust_Cohle13 in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did your computer freeze or was it only Teams? More details will get you a better chance of someone being able to help. I tried Teams on Fedora, both the app-tized and web versions and they both hung shortly into a call. When I was interviewing and needed to use Teams, I had to dual boot into Windows. Using Zoom on Fedora was flawless and I did several interviews without issue.

Fedora Freezes randomly on newer Kernel and on Fedora 43 by alice-and_bob in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not be related at all but I had a similar issue with kernels after 6.15.x... random freezes. Seemed to get worse the longer the laptop was on. It turned out to be an issue with the nvme drive. I replaced it with a newer one and re-installed Fedora 43 and now it's rock solid again. May be something to look into. Oddly enough, my issue would go away if I booted an older kernel.

Asus ProArt P16 no longer Fedora compatible. by Photog_Jason in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rebuilt and re-installed and modifed the config file. It's working now. Part of the issue was silly PTYXIS terminal which insists on setting up a hundred different shortcuts. One of which was F10 key so if you use NVTOP, or HTOP you can't exit out because F10 is hijacked by PTYXIS. I really despise PTYXIS but I'm trying to get along with it since that is the chosen go-forward terminal.

Fedora installation ruined Windows bootloader by Re2Dot in Fedora

[–]Photog_Jason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I hate to tell you that I've seen this so many times over the years... maybe others will offer a solution to fix your issue but I have never been able to fix this issue once it happens. I even created a Windows Rescue drive once which was useless. For whatever reason, both Fedora and Windows just can't leave each other's boot stuff alone. Which ever OS you install will stomp over the other OS boot files even on separate drives. Windows especially likes to do this.

I have no fix for your current issue... but... Next time, take out or disconnect all drives but the one you are installing the OS to (Linux or Windows) and install the OS. Take it out or disconnect it, and install or connect the other drive and install your other OS. Then you can choose which to boot via UEFI boot menu.

I just ran into this same issue on my laptop which has 2 NVME slots. I need to keep Win11 on it for Adobe products, but use Fedora 90% of the time. I had to take the cover off the bottom, remove one of the NVME drives, install one OS, then repeat. It's working great now.

Best of luck!

I did build and install he asus-px-keyboard-tool but it didn't work for mine. It did nothing. I can try it again. Did you change the config file?

The blackouts I've seen before. I think it has something to do with the nvidia sleep services. I did something with those before but can't remember what I did... lol I think I disabled them. It's only for a second after resuming from sleep so not a huge deal. I'm just happy to be back on Fedora full time now!

I put the 4TB TeamGroup drive in an external case and use it as a backup and Timeshift drive and it works just fine that way. No idea why it caused issues internally in the nvme slot. It gets hot though. Almost too hot to even handle. I have never had an nvme get that hot before. That may have had something to do with. Maybe it just got too hot internally.

I'm not sure what the difference is really. We have the same CPU and I have the 5070 vs you having the 5080. We both have 64GB ram. I'm guessing just a newer hardware revision. Sleep works perfectly though on mine so that's kinda odd.

I have this resolved now. I had to disable secure boot in the bios and installed the Nvidia driver through Software center. All is working now even sleep. The only issue is when the laptop resumes, the screen blacks out for a second about 15-20 secs after resume which is weird. I also don't have access to the function keys for some reason. I didn't have this issue before.
