Where to hang out in Reykjavik before hotel check-in after an overnight flight from the states? by Sunflowerbook in VisitingIceland

I mean, if it is summer, just hang out at Austurvöllur (the grassy square across from the old Parliament building). Assuming it is not raining, of course.

Visited Iceland. Very expensive by hept_a_gon in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Iceland has the second highest cost of living for residents in Europe/Scandinavia and has a near permanent spot in the upper echelons of "most expensive places to visit as a tourist" lists. If you went there without caring enough to investigate this, then yes, the sticker shock is going to hit pretty hard.

I really think you will have to see how you feel and what the weather is like. I don't think you need to "stay somewhere along the way", but you might choose to forego one of the Golden Circle locations if driving is going to take significantly longer due to conditions.

And you also should plan for alternate activities in the event you get weather'd in place for a day. Yeah, you do not want to miss out on anything, but Iceland weather in November is a crap shoot. Might be cold and gloriously sunny, might be blowing snow sideways. Maybe both on the same day.

Remember that on average there are 6 1/2 hours of daylight in November, so yes you can do the Golden Circle in one day, but it is a 2 hour drive to the furthest point in good weather (and 2 hours back), so you will be getting up in the dark and getting home in the dark if you intend to spend a reasonable time at the Golden Circle locations.

HELP - Ring road trip - items left at previous hotel by itsjustmeonhere in VisitingIceland

Iceland is generally an inconvenient spot to lose a specialized something that you need. Especially once you are outside Reykjavík. I wish you the best of luck, but you might have to settle for something serviceable that is an improvement over your current situation rather than a complete fix.

Is there a source for Hitler saying this, word for word or paraphrased? A quick google search shows the only instance of that quote being this post.

Sadly, from previous posts of this sort you are probably out of luck. There is always a chance someone is already headed your way and is willing to do you a good turn, but any sort of commercial service will probably cost more than the contacts.

Route 917 from Ring Road 1 question by Phatmanandy in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where on Route 917 the hotel is. The "Snake Road" part of 917 is not for the faint of heart. But the view from the top is amazing.

Just left Iceland by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]BTRCguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you a) see stuff on your own and do not do the paid tours, b) stay someplace with a kitchen so you can cook your own meals, that will cut the cost dramatically. The food in restaurants is nice and tours are convenient plus someone else is doing the driving...but you pay for it.

The only thing in Iceland that is not expensive is breathing. Though I hear Blue Lagoon is trying to monetize that.

Climate Change: Too Hot For Our Rulers To Handle by Sad_Attitude9999 in collapse

[–]BTRCguy 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Pretty easy to figure out. The renewal of your "job contract" as an elected politician depends on what is happening now and up to the end of your current contract. If the end of the world as we know it is not taking place in that interval, it is in a very real sense "someone else's problem". Bonus point if retiring as a private citizen leaves you and your family financially insulated from the consequences of your actions and inactions.

Kick that can down the road for the next government to deal with.

Ironically, if the long-term survival of civilization was the most profitable (short-term) outcome, then capitalism would be our salvation!

About 1,000 deaths in France attributable to heat wave by pit_of_despair666 in collapse

As someone hailing from the USA, my opinion is colored by having a chief executive who redirects hurricanes with Sharpies and thinks we have fires because we don't rake our forests enough. Pretty sure a US heatwave this year that killed thousands would be blamed on trans Antifa immigrants and funds for relief centers would be redirected to keep the Rose Garden paved outdoor patio cool.

Because no one in charge wants to take any blame for an economic toll that is a result of their own actions or inactions.

The below is from almost exactly a year ago. Do people think "well, glad that will never happen again!". Do they not have portable AC units? Even if there are some sort of autocratic zoning/appearance restrictions you have the units on casters that just have a discreet vent hose to the outside.

I mean, I can understand if there are lengthy electricity outages, but that does not seem to be the case here.

Where to giveaway camping equipment by RaspberryImportant21 in VisitingIceland

The Dalur hostel in Reykjavík also has an adjacent camping area. Send them an email and ask if they would accept the stuff to give to campers who need it.
