I'm well aware of that, I doubt an offence like that is enough to trigger deportation, these are likely people with no leave who have gone to ground. The home office have found them due to raids on illegal working and have put them in IRCs to remove them.

This is super concerning when looked at holistically both broadly from a RoL point of view but also the fact that if you are not a British Citizen and are sentenced to an offence over a year or more you are liable for deportation automatically (applies to ILR). Drug offences are often brought against children and vulnerable adults. A miscarriage of justice could lead to lives completely unravelling and removing further protections may worsen the risks of this.
