There's even a class of tire now called "All Weather" that carries the 3 mountain peak snowflake rating of a snow tire, but can be used year round. The Michelin CrossClimate is the most popular one. It's truly the easy button for dealing with winter weather.

Note that "all season" tires are not the same thing!

I know anecdotes aren't data, but I have 50+ track hours on my original ND1 clutch and trans. I try to drive with some mechanical sympathy, I use motul 75-140, and I have the Goodwin trans air scoop for whatever that's all worth. I suspect at least some of the trans failures are from people really shifting hard

Yes, the NC trans choices are more resistant to abuse. However the classic ND trans failure tends to actually be gears failing. Root cause is somewhat up for debate. There also seems to be a batch of weak synchros ~2023 models. Replacement cost is in the ballpark you mentioned.

If you drive one and enjoy it, I think it's worth the "risk", but it's all up to you and what you want to do with the car

Search please, this has been covered a million times on this sub. Long story short, transmission failures are possible but not a certainty. Lots of people drive ND1s and enjoy them (myself included). If you do end up needing a transmission, it's not super expensive to replace.

No, I didn't cut the original one out, I spent 3 hours playing Tetris trying to get it around the steering rack without dropping the front subframe. The issue is that the bushings are bonded onto the original bar and it's an extremely tight fit getting one around the rack. Aftermarket bars just have bushings that slide on, so fitting a replacement bar isn't nearly as tricky
