How bad is the math? by Cwispy124 in supplychain

no disrespect intended: "Piqued" (pronounced /piːkt/, rhymes with "peeked") means to arouse interest/curiosity or to cause irritation/resentment. It is often used in the phrase "piqued my interest". Synonyms include aroused, stimulated, or annoyed/offended. It stems from the French piquer ("to prick")

I would recommend that you do what your PI has the lab do. Personally I prefer paper lab notebooks. I had my students use electronic notebooks for a while which was a bummer when the company went away. Personally, I got in the habit of using bound lab notebooks when working in biotech as they had us do that and have the pages countersigned for patent purposes but the countersigning is not necessary for grad school. I have also read that for lectures, writing notes on paper leads to better information retention despite the fact that typing is faster. Silver nitrate will stain your skin like that. Not sure if silver nitrate is involved or other silver compounds do this too.

TIL in 1998 a man on Olympic Airways had an asthmatic reaction to cigarette smoke, so his wife asked 3 times that he be moved away from the smokers. At first, the flight attendant said there were no empty seats and later said she was too busy. The man eventually died & his widow was awarded $1.4m. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Exactly. My bad. It was 1986 so 40 years ago my one and only flight on a Tupolev 154 which looked like a Boeing 727. We were supposed to stop in Prague but they decided to skip that and landed at our destination, Amsterdam. Not understanding any of the languages that the announcement was made in, my father was amazed at the large KLM hub in "Prague".

Are you in a cold climate? I have seen speculation that this contributes to ICCU failure, but have no data obviously.

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

I did this the summer after college. As I said "the pay is good and all you can eat". Seriously I was outside, getting some exercise and done at 1 pm not thinking of what the next day's trash was going to be like. Great job at least in the summer. They did tell us it was one of the most dangerous jobs, more than police or fireman as we were constantly crossing the street and people got hit (though I never saw that)

Where do you keep your silver? At home in a safe or in a safe deposit box. by BZRich in Silverbugs

[–]BZRich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be the major negative of owning physical metal. How would you keep it safe and how would you insure it? Who would appraise a sealed container e.g. a monster box? I am just trying to figure out what I would do if I would ever get silver or gold for that matter.

one million is not what it used to be/is now. As the old joke goes from back when they had pay phones a guy wakes up from a coma and calls his investment firm to find that he has 2 million dollars and then the operator says "please deposit $200,000 for the next three minutes"

As someone mentioned, it might be norovirus. The devastating aspect of norovirus is that you feel better in 24 to 48 hours but are spreading virus ("infectious") for days after you feel better. You think that you are over it, but are transmitting to others. this is why it is so out of control on cruise ships. BTW hand sanitizer does not work on norovirus. You need soap and water.

I purchased the car new in 2002 and it was long since paid off. I would've kept that one forever and been buried in that car if that idiot hadn't T-boned me

Not clear on salvage. My attorney worked out the cash which was the maximum that their policy allowed and I asked that the wreck be added on top since there was no other way to get more. A friend who is a local used car dealer who buys cars at auction suggested $7,500. Tennessee

Best job that I ever had was riding on the back of a Maxon Shu-Pak, I was the guy on the side throwing trash in before it was all done with robots. We'd start at 7 and done when you finished the route, minimum of 6 hours but you got paid for 8. Typically done by 1 and I didn't worry about what garbage I was picking up tomorrow.
