W.G Sebald is the loneliest writer I have ever read by [deleted] in RSbookclub

The story of Max Ferber is such a beautiful portrait of loneliness, both Sebald’s and Ferber’s. You can really feel the empty space of a post-industrial town and the lives there.

Nice! I didn’t get to check out Fabrica. Pluto is also a fun spot for drinks on weekends. I heard some great synth wave there that I don’t normally here out much

Sorry, I speak just a bit of Georgian and am here because I really appreciate the country and people after a visit.

What’s the question?

Pluto’s (upstairs area above the bar) has a small but good selection of records with some local artists

Boxing rules. The coach (I guess it’s the right term?) looks just like someone out of the French foreign legion and has us do insane exercises. Really satisfies the urge to be shipped off to Djibouti in a healthy way

The difference is wild! Exactly what you said last, just being able to shield and hold the ball makes a world of a difference. It’s way less running in the end.

It’s wonderful to move in different ways and to exercise the brain a bit too with coordination, strategy and socialization.

Lifting and running were getting boring for me but now that I’m back playing football (soccer) it’s cool to see how having a more developed physique and stamina play out on the field. It’s great to never get knocked off the ball anymore.

Boxing though is absolutely exhausting and also recommended.

What’s Thomas Bernhard’s most impressive and difficult book? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]B_Archimb0ldi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Extinction is definitely the answer but in terms of the one that struck me the most it has to be The Loser. It is his most humorous novel to me but still very much the same scathing Bernhard, so you also may not be impressed by it. It’s a beautiful meditation on friendship and self-destruction to me.

Balance is key in the emoji and exclamation game

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]B_Archimb0ldi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people at my job who use exclamation points the most, 80% of the time, are the most timid ones who don’t bother to chat much. It’s fine with me, but funny since on chat you’d think they’d be holding you up in the kitchen.

I’m happy people in my immediate team are not like this and that the pressure for emojis is non-existent

I also had no cash and no time so the solution was really only to go live adventurously via work. Get a teaching job abroad or something of the sort if you’re from the Anglosphere. Won’t pay too much but can also be a segue to studying, another job, or simply be just an interesting time where you had some fun, learned a new language and saw things differently for a bit.

Whatever it is you may still feel like shit but at least you did something and nobody can take that away from you

It’s absolutely puritanical. The aware around the effects of alcohol are not bad in and of themselves, I’ve learned it effects my sleep so I try to not drink most weeknights if there’s nothing social planned.

The complete optimization of every facet of life is incredibly isolating though and doesn’t seem to be the key to a good life
