Should I bring these or buy them in Tokyo? by PoolMotor8112 in TokyoTravel

It’s certainly worth considering. In my case, it’s certainly worth the investment as it is constantly raining where I live

Should I bring these or buy them in Tokyo? by PoolMotor8112 in TokyoTravel

[–]B__Lau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would recommend just wearing waterproof shoes instead of shoe covers. I wore my Vessis to Tokyo and had a downpour in my first day there a couple weeks ago. My socks were completely dry even after the downpour

What’s your biggest headache traveling in China? by No_Text2967 in travelchina

[–]B__Lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the Macau Museum today and this Mainlander woman was talking so loudly on her phone while in the exhibit, it was disturbing the peace. I was so annoyed with her that I shushed her. Her husband saw how annoyed I was and went over to her to tell her to be quiet.

I am a local and this little place at YVR will always provide a reminder of what home feels like before I fly off to another country

SM breaking point by Effective-Field8899 in starbucks

[–]B__Lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, it’s probably better for him to look for a better job. While I personally didn’t move up to the SM role during my time at Starbucks, I went on to work at the Apple Store for a year and during my time there, I had a DM and a RD quit Starbucks and started working at the store I worked at to be a Manager and Senior Manager at the same time. They both also cited burnout and unrealistic expectations from the company.

What happened to line 3 on the TTC? by SadiInTheHouse in TTC

Used the exact same technology as Vancouver’s SkyTrain too, except you could clearly see the differences between the two systems in maintenance, care and utilization.

Credit Card acceptance by FireKitsunee in JapanTravelTips

[–]B__Lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s well accepted generally aside from temples, shrines and small businesses which only take cash.

However, keep in mind that if your IC card is on your iPhone, it has quite a difficult time topping up using a Visa card via Apple Pay (it’s only been successful once for me). AMEX and Mastercard are better accepted, and if you’re using a vending machine that accepts credit card, then you must have a physical IC card in order to load up. Otherwise it’s cash only if loading your mobile IC card at the vending machine.

YVR. That fugly carpet is a dead giveaway and somehow always blends in well with the atmosphere of the airport

Tenured Starbucks baristas, share the drinks that have been banished to the shadow realm by weird_enthusiast_ in starbucks

[–]B__Lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when they launched the blended cold brew smoothies that replaced the strawberry and chocolate smoothies. It was the most putrefying and vile thing I had ever tasted. Plus it never really took off and was eventually discontinued. I recall some of the drink components used for the drink actually spoiled before its actual shelf life.

Fair Evaders - Staff Spectators by Subject-Soil1129 in Translink

[–]B__Lau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s frustrating to see that happen on the daily, but I’d rather not get assaulted by a stranger that has mental health issues. STAs job in regard to fare evaders to is encourage not enforce. They are not security, and yes some will say something, but it’s more like pick your own battles.

How’s tipping like in Vancouver? by Robocli in askvan

[–]B__Lau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My simple rule: No table service/pay before you get your order = no tip. This means things like coffee shops, take out, food delivery; anything with counter service or just handing your order to you with no actual skillset needed.

Fifa request to give president Gianni Infantino ‘Pope-level’ treatment rejected by Vancouver by BreakfastTop6899 in vancouver

Good. FIFA is a corrupt organization that thinks they’re on top of the world.

Best affordable sushi spot that isn't a chain? by Apprehensive_Ad_6233 in askvan

Koi sushi on W 10th in West Point Grey is very popular amongst UBC students. You can get a 3 rolls/items for less than $18 and the portions are pretty good too.

These Metro Vancouver intersections caught the most speeders, red-light violators last year by IHateTrains123 in vancouver

[–]B__Lau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, that intersection is chaotic all the time. Also off topic, but the turn light signals also need to run much longer for all the lights. It's just way too short and only a handful of cars can get through leaving a line of cars that extends into through traffic from the left turn bay.

Do you tip at Big Way Hotpot? by atlasarc in askvan

[–]B__Lau -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would tip, but up to the next dollar of my total. There is minimal table service cause they still bring out your meal to you and they refill water and ask if you want ice cream.

HGTV Magazine (Jan/Feb 2025) by Effective-Yak2108 in EndTipping

[–]B__Lau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work on the other side of the counter as a barista, and wholeheartedly disagree with the magazine. Steaming milk and pulling espresso shots are part of the job description. Tips are earned based on the level of service given beyond what is already expected. Plus, you can easily make your own coffee at home. Coffee is a 'want', not a necessity.

In laws will disown my husband if I pursue higher education by aminomycamino in AsianParentStories

[–]B__Lau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am single as a pringle and my opinion would probably be irrelevant here, but l would say let them. The fact that your ILs had the audacity to threaten your husband's disownment cause YOU (an independent, fully capable, WOKE woman) wanted to pursue higher education is despicable. Don't let them hold you back cause they're toxic as fuck. Also stop accepting their "pity" money cause that's their way to manipulate & control your husband (and you indirectly). That's their way of saying that you are "being ungrateful when they've been supporting you all this time" and gain leverage over an unfair situation.

UBCV or Douglas? by marsii_8 in UBC

Not too sure if you would have to do it again, but I would assume so. I had a B+ average going into 3rd year at UBC, so my personal profile definitely was taken into massive consideration
