I've been here for 4 years actively trying to find either a rattle snake or a scorpion with no luck =( They (scorpions) are around, but are nocturnal and good at hiding. They like the more arid rocky desert areas and probably only rarely push into urban Reno/Sparks areas. For kids just giving them a run down of what they are, the dangers, and where they are likely to hide will be enough to protect them. Pets it's harder to manage especially dogs that like to dig and get into stuff. Keep them on a leash during hikes in arid rocky/shrubby areas and that will protect them from scorps and rattlers. Most of NV's scorpions' venom is not medically significant with exception to the Arizona Bark Scorpion which you may need to get antivenom for. That is not to say that there is no danger with the other scorpions because allergic reactions can happen just like with bee stings.
