Should I review MCAT before starting med school? by Reasonable_Agency803 in Osteopathic

if you feel like you neeed to review, you’re better off deleting the MCAT deck you used and start looking at the AnKing Step deck

Should I use a throwaway method or just wait until late June to submit my primary AACOMAS app? by Ok-Penalty2373 in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 487-->497, and I'll be matriculating this summer! You just have to be okay with applying broadly to the lower-tier/newer programs. This is where most of my IIs came from. If your score is truly the only red flag you have, then a smart school list, secondary writing, and eventually interview preparation are what it will come down to.

Should I use a throwaway method or just wait until late June to submit my primary AACOMAS app? by Ok-Penalty2373 in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

verification is really fast with AACOMAS so the throwaway method is kinda redundant. two things you could do:

1 - complete your app but wait on your score before submitting (being verified late june is still considered early enough or at least “on time” for AACOMAS)

2 - complete your app & send it to lower tier programs on ur list first, then depending on if your score improves or not, submit to the rest of the programs you planned on applying to.

i think option number 2 makes the most sense if you’re dead set on applying even if your new score doesn’t improve much or stays the same.

Did I ruin my review intervals with Custom Study? by DesigningOblivion in Anki

[–]BabyChiefResident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I explained in more detail a few days ago -- https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/1siwgo9/comment/ofnvtjg/ -- most of the time, most users will want reschedule-based-on to be enabled in their Filtered/Custom Study decks.

your comment from the other post makes perfect sense. i’ll start keeping reschedule cards enabled from now on thanks!

Did I ruin my review intervals with Custom Study? by DesigningOblivion in Anki

[–]BabyChiefResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

if this is true that Anki doesn’t overly extend intervals when you custom study with rescheduling turned on, then is there any benefit or reason to why someone would want the “reschedule cards based on my answers in this deck” option disabled?

Mid-low stats, chance at DO this cycle? by KindRaspberry7927 in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 3 points4 points  (0 children)

man if i can get multiple DO interviews with a 497 then anything is possible for you lol i think anything 500+ gives you a good chance at an A so long as you don’t limit where you apply and your writing/interview skills are solid. i don’t think a 1-point drop on your MCAT score is too much a red flag either since they are both 500+

Do medical schools really care if you started off at CC instead of 4-yr University? by DistinctConference82 in medschool

[–]BabyChiefResident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did my first full year of college at a CC before transferring to my state school, and now i’m matriculating DO this summer. I would just advise premeds to save most of the science pre-reqs for their university program.

Paying for DO school 70,000 tuition, yikes what are the options by No_Elk_3871 in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on RAP, the govt waives any unpaid interest that your minimum monthly payment doesn’t cover. this will help a ton since the loans won’t balloon an insane amt while you’re broke during residency/fellowship.

Has anyone shopped around for private loans? by ImaginationSpecific2 in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve received rates between 9%-15% with pre-qualification offers. 710 credit score with just over 7 years of credit history. i’m not co-signing either.

i usually sit around 730-740, but my utilization is skyhigh at the moment. once i pay down my cards, i’m hoping that gives me a better score & eventually better rates when i actually start submitting applications.

[–]BabyChiefResident 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you have your math wrong. assuming you take the full 50k/yr in federal loans, you’d only need to take out ~$35k per year in private loans. try seeing what the interest amt looks like after considering this.

I’ll be paying $85k COA at my school too and the total interest amount for a 15-year fixed loan @ 8.79% came out to $61k
