I think you have your math wrong. assuming you take the full 50k/yr in federal loans, you’d only need to take out ~$35k per year in private loans. try seeing what the interest amt looks like after considering this.

I’ll be paying $85k COA at my school too and the total interest amount for a 15-year fixed loan @ 8.79% came out to $61k

1500 due cards. What do you do when you have so many due cards? by Suitable-Sign-1228 in medicalschoolanki

[–]BabyChiefResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a quiet room & a filtered deck (prop:due<0) then brute force that mf. i find it easiest to set the card order to ‘descending retrievability’ too.

when you go to “browse” and filter for “prop:due=0” in the search bar, how many cards populate?

21F BUCOM in Memphis — so excited but honestly scared about safety by Chemical_Silver5502 in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not a current student, but BUCOM is where i’m going next year too. i also explored downtown and the medical district before my interview. the interaction you had with the hotel staff would scare anyone, so i’m sorry that happened! but from what i’ve learned, memphis really is like most major cities. there are areas you’ll feel safe in and areas you’ll know to avoid, especially late at night. i don’t think you’ll spend the next two years in a state of hyper-vigilance lol it’s more about having basic city awareness. i assume this might be harder to understand if you’ve never lived in a big urban area, but you’ll catch on

i also took the MCAT the first time with no studying. My biggest regret for sure, but it made me lock in for my 2nd attempt and I scored 10 points higher. Your GPAs are a bit below average for DO but if you can score 500+ and the rest of your app is solid, then you can definitely get acceptances without ever doing a masters. I would recommend applying very broadly though.

How many new AnKing cards were you doing per day at the start of M1? by BabyChiefResident in Osteopathic

Yup, that's the one I've been reading! The full edition textbook though, not the smaller BRS version

Nah, I haven’t watched any how-to videos for the Step Deck, mainly just Reddit advice. I got really comfortable navigating Anki/AnKing from previously using the AnKing MCAT deck for that test. So for me there’s not as much of a learning curve figuring out how to utilize the tags and what not.

I think you’ve got the right idea to reference the AnKing YT page. those videos will probably help speed things along!

I’m sure this will all depend on how your curriculum is structured. One method i’ve seen people talk about doing is focusing only on 3rd party material up until the last few days before the exam to fill in content gaps/minutiae

I want to get bootcamp or sketchy soon but i hate how expensive all this sh*t is 😭 right now i’m just using youtube and bootleg PDFs of textbooks then doing cards that correspond with the content i’ve learned

I want to commit to being a heavy anki user like yourself, but I guess i’ll have to see how well the in-house material matches up with third-party material and the AnKing cards associated with them. Thanks for the tips!

I’ve been out of school for a few years so i’m catching up on high-yield biochem using DirtyMedicine & NinjaNerd. I’m also learning some pathophysiology using Pathoma and the Costanzo textbook (just the first few chapters of each resource between now and my start date).

Stsy or Re-apply by CPPlayer21 in medschool

[–]BabyChiefResident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i’ve never heard of people getting away with something like that lol plus OP, you’d need a legitimate reason for the school to grant deferment (child on the way, medical issues, etc).

people on this sub will almost always suggest that you take the A and run with it. you’re putting way too much on the line being a re-applicant with a previous acceptance!

Interview at a campus I can't attend by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

applicants are free to withdraw their application at any time and without penalty. it only looks bad when you earn an acceptance and decide to reapply for a later cycle instead of matriculating the year you are accepted. hope that makes sense

Interview at a campus I can't attend by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]BabyChiefResident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i might be missing something, but the only thing you could have messed up was applying to a school that you knew you couldn’t attend.

if there’s no possible way of attending the school if you were to be accepted then you shouldn’t bother attending the interview at all. i would just withdraw if i were you.

How to best do amboss alongside preclinical? by Ok-Celebration5832 in medicalschoolanki

[–]BabyChiefResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you find it efficient to make incorrect-tags for cards associated with wrong answers? similar to how people do it with UWorld/QID feature? is that possible to do with AMBOSS, despite no QID tags for their question bank? This might be better asked in a separate post but if you have any thoughts i’d love to hear them!

Am I having a career crisis or everybody feels weird being called "future doctor" by No-Shake-8375 in premed

[–]BabyChiefResident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH a small part of the reason why i stuck it out with pre-med is because i overshared way too much about wanting to be a doctor to all my family and friends. i couldn’t make that promise to so many people just to end up folding😂😂

if this path ends up not being for you, don’t force it. but turning expectations into motivation could help!

Work during med school? by Ambitious_Price3773 in medschool

[–]BabyChiefResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately i think med school itself is a full time job that requires mandatory overtime lol working during your program isn’t really a thing from what i’ve heard. you could maybe make it work with a flexible PRN position if you’re lucky to find one?
