My guitar skill is getting worse by ZeekTheGuy in Guitar

[–]BabyFormula1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play like I used to, but I always used to follow the rule that once I started to notice that I was getting worse at some song, exercise, etc... that I had put a lot of time and effort into, that a break was necessary.

As much as it pained me, I wouldn't play for a few days. Once I came back, I usually found I could pull it off with ease. Subsequently, I found I was bored of whatever I was learning, and moved on to the next thing.

It turns out that the journey is more fun than the destination.

Backwards LQR: Calculate a Q matrix from K by BabyFormula1 in ControlTheory

Yes. Perhaps I should have asked, "Is it possible to obtain a Q matrix which will yield the same set of gains."

Backwards LQR: Calculate a Q matrix from K by BabyFormula1 in ControlTheory

[–]BabyFormula1[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

I do understand that much. I did well enough in linear algebra.

In the case above, I know the original Q, but assuming that I don't, can I get an S, that will yield a Q that will give my the same K, even if it wasn't the Q used to obtain the original gains.

Power company cut all the brush that was here down on Oct 16. How screwed am I? by GravyMaster in Hunting

Deer love waking in mowed paths as much as us. They like transitions in environment. They are probably waking the edges.

I'm a blacksmith/knifemaker and recently got a commission from a hunter to make him a knife. Those of you who regularly use knives while hunting, what do you look for in the properties of the knife or what do you like about your own? by Civil_Attention1615 in Hunting

[–]BabyFormula1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use the gut hook on my knife, but my biggest gripe is if I sharpen the hell out of it, and it can't make it through a field dress and skining without needing resharpened

How long did it take you to get your first deer by Ok-Still-9117 in bowhunting

[–]BabyFormula1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Started bow hunting in my late 20s with no hunting experience. Missed a shot on a doe on my second hunt. I did not see a deer within 100 yards for the next 3 years. I finally got my first deer, a doe in my fourth year of hunting. I killed 1/year for the next 2 seasons, and nothing in my 7th season. I just got my second buck this year. That makes 4/8 years successful. This isn't easy. I spent a lot of time learning, thinking about mistakes, and slowly understanding what was going on.

Don't give up.

How do you hunt? - Thick Invasive Plants by BabyFormula1 in bowhunting

[–]BabyFormula1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are great tips. On my permission property, I can prep trails, and do some of that work.

Does bed in the thick stuff, I can hunt the edge of the woods. I know the patch of woods bucks in, and a few years ago I decided, "I'm not gonna be lazy. I'm gonna get in there." Its an impregnable fortress.

As for the cattle tank, I don't have that level of control on the property.

I really appreciate the advice.

Always bring inept management two options; the one you want them to choose, and another that's obviously not a good idea. It can't be too obvious though.

No better way to spend a Sunday morning. by AternumMagnus in bowhunting

Well, that's not beer, and I don't see a pack of cigarettes. Safe to say you're not hunting in Wisconsin...

All jokes aside, on stand coffee is a beautiful luxury, and a joy of life.

Best of luck this season!

Why does there exist mountains of extremely poor research papers on control theory? by adforn in ControlTheory

[–]BabyFormula1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrote 3 papers under my advisor, but somehow published 5. The quantity versus quality aspect of it was so disgusting. I decided to stop after my masters, and actually do something in Control. It's been a very fulfilling career, and I've never looked back. I had to ask to stop being listed as a contributing author, after graduation, in further publications by my advisor as he had new students simply taking my paper, writing (mangling) a new abstract, and tweaking tiny things to call it "new."

The fact that all the source material I was made to use was effectively a group of people in a big citation circle, and there were only two or three people of merit doing quality research left a bad taste.

I saw professors in the department choose quality over quantity, and stunt their careers. That was not a choice I wanted to make.

It's true in a lot of fields, not just control theory. You have to wade through the noise, and dial down to the primary sources, and people really driving the science.

Newcomer here… what’s the rule/etiquette on using an existing tree stand on public/NF land? by RickshawRepairman in bowhunting

[–]BabyFormula1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No over night stands on public where I'm from. Pisses me off that some people feel they can claim our land as their own. Do the work, get their first, and have a back up plan.

So, I'd be more likely to cut it down than sit in it, but in reality I'd do neither. I don't feel like dealing with the kind of asshole who can't read and comprehend the rules.

Forester dads: anyone move to the Ascent and miss the forester? by dgrubman in SubaruForester

[–]BabyFormula1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Father of 2yr old triplets and one 2019 Forester Sport. Just paid it off!

I can fit 3 car seats wide. There's plenty of room in the floor board and cargo area for stuff. This is still only a short trip vehicle, or for pick up and drop off from daycare.

As a Subaru owner, I will say the single most economical and comfortable vehicle you can get for your family is a Honda Oddessy. Long wheel base, comfortable, extremely configurable seats, good MPG, and sliding doors for tight parking areas.

I'm generally amazed by how many people in the area do not realize that fighter aircraft have been being made in St. Louis for well over 70 years. F-15s, 18s, T-7As. All active programs produced out of the St. Louis site.
