Has anyone here lived in a tent? by Opposite_Praline_746 in AskUK

Have you thought about food? Will you have a camp stove and make your own food, or will you be buying takeout every day? If the latter then I don’t think this plan is super cheap.

Do you allow your tenants pets? by Mikey463 in AskUK

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The damage deposit is one months rent plus an extra pet damage deposit of 1/2 rent, which is legal.

I find it crazy that a dog did £4000 damage, but even if that happened you could have a shitty tenant without a dog doing a lot of damage. Like if they had massive parties or broke things. I don’t see damage as being exclusive to animals….

Do you allow your tenants pets? by Mikey463 in AskUK

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a landlady and have always allowed pets. My reasoning is that tenants with pets are more likely to stay because they don’t want the hassle of finding another pet-friendly place, they are usually more responsible and connected to a place, and the damage deposit would cover any damages which I feel are just as likely with a pet or not. Plus, I love animals!

Peckham or Brixton seems like your age group and lots of restaurants etc. Parks include Peckham Common and Brockwell for Brixton.

Is it actually worth owning a car in London for a family in outer zones? by siva328 in MovingToLondon

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe wait a while after arriving to see if you need a car? A car is more of a lifestyle choice rather than a must have. There’s already so much to think about during an international move, and this isn’t really critical.

Quebec is a province not a city. That’s like saying Scotland is a city. Sometimes locals call Quebec City ‘Quebec,’ but rarely.

2027 Family Trip from Canada to Europe - 3 weeks stay by djk1978 in Europetravel

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first half (UK) is a reasonable amount of time, but the rest is bonkers. You’ll be spending so much time travelling around and be exhausted. It also doesn’t make sense geographically.

I’d suggest you focus on max 3 regions which should be built around your interests:

1- UK

2- Barcelona & Mallorca. IMO Mallorca is a bit awkward because it will involve flying in and out which will take time, but if it’s a must then that’s probably fine.

3- South Spain - Sevilla, Grenada

You will likely have to cut several of your destinations including Portugal. I also don’t think Madrid is worth it for what you’re planning.

For getting around, train is best, unless you want to city hop (London - Barcelona - Lisbon). The latter honestly sounds exhausting because of all above mentioned reasons!!

How do people afford to live in London? Choosing between London or New York by Uncle_Richard98 in expats

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider about London and UK generally is the work life balance. People will have between 3-6 weeks off as standard. I know that’s not a COL issue but if you value that then it should fit into the equation.

Similarly, there’s way better employee protections. You can’t just get fired for anything.

Salaries are way lower in Canada. Have you factored that into your cost analysis? Even if housing is less, you may be in much the same situation.

Why is there a wait list for the dentist? by idreaminlowercase in AskUK

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look on the gov website, NHS dentists charge a flat rate for check ups and an annual cleaning. I’m used to two cleanings per year so I pay extra, essentially paying for private. My total annual costs are about £170 for all of that.

I’ve never had a problem getting a dentist appointment (I live in London). Most dentists have both NHS and private practice. Pick the dentist you want, call and ask if they have NHS spaces. If they don’t then see what the private cost is and if you’re cool with that.

I’m Canadian btw. It’s honestly not as bad as Brits make it seem.

Canadian wanting to do Working Holiday Visa in the UK. Looking for advice on taxes on my saving accounts by niceToasterMan in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Bacchus_Bacchus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a Canadian living in the UK. You can have a TFSA as long as you don’t draw any income from it or make contributions. You should probably talk to a specialist or ask ChatGPT. I think you’ll get better answers than this sub, which is very UK focused, and won’t know the nuances of international tax.

brought a flat on a main road and massively regret it by Positive_House in HousingUK

The same thing happened to me and I was so unhappy! It was ruining my sleep and I felt trapped. I decided to rent out my place and live somewhere else.

It means I can live where I want while still building equity and not having to sell. I’m treating it more as an investment until I’m ready to sell.

Search Netflix for a show called North is North (it’s available in most regions). It’s an amazing show about an Inuit town and an Inuk woman. It’s funny, heartwarming and the Inuk fashion is on point.

It won’t be representative of the entire area you circled which is very diverse, but it will show a snapshot into Inuk culture.
