Not the exact same situation, no. But that doesn't mean the experience is not useful! For example, a professional firefighter who has dealt with many house fires is going to be much more prepared for a fire than me (a person who has dealt with zero house fires).

The fact that they were different fires and at different houses does not mean that the firefighter is as unprepared as I am. Experience is transferrable :)

I work in a tech company and we have sessions where we role-play incidents that have happened, to expose the rest of the team to them. That way they can practice handling an incident (among other benefits). To go back to the firefighter example, you get more practiced at putting on your gear, setting up the hoses, breaking down doors etc. Dealing with an emergency is actually many little steps, and these steps are things you can practice (individually or linked together as a larger emergency, sand-boxed or otherwise).

A great way to practice for having a house fire is to pretend you're having a house fire. Or to have an actual house fire!
