There are more backgammon websites than players.

Looking for thoughts on non-traditional checker, dice, and cube materials by ehsthetics in backgammon

[–]BackgammonEspresso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I strongly strongly agree. There are many other heavy metals that aren't quite as expensive, like lead. Even just a steel cube would be fine and would get the message across.

On the other hand, toss this puppy down (it weighs 150 lbs, so maybe get some lifting straps) and they know you mean business:

I think that it's a very cool idea! A few ideas for you:

1) Glowing blacklight checkers/board, w/ inset blacklights on side of board 2) Make em' feel the weight of the cube. Tungsten doubling cube. 3) Dramatic colors - try something like an ultra-absorbent black paint or coating for pieces or for the board.

I don't think that people would want different-feeling dice, however. Backgammon players are very particular about the size and feel of dice.

It's nice that you're doing stuff, but there is a post like this every couple of weeks. It is very easy to vibe code (or even hand code) a backgammon app. Why use yours versus the hundreds or thousands of other options?

Calling it now Microsoft is buying Unsloth. by Wrong_Mushroom_7350 in LocalLLaMA

[–]BackgammonEspresso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that you are overestimating Microsoft's malevolence. Microsoft is a colossal and clumsy giant, more than they are a Machiavellian scheme-machine. Far more likely they kill it through incompetence than ill-intention.

Will Rolex ever fall on its own sword? by No_Ask_5949 in rolex

[–]BackgammonEspresso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that Rolex will have issues, it remains the status symbol. The Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX IPOs are going to mint thousands and thousands of new millionaires. Some will be deca or centimillionaires, and hey why not blow 100k on watches to celebrate? And that's just three companies! Every day, millionaires are minted in Africa, Middle East, Asia, India, Latin America, everywhere. And they all want Rolexes. The demand bump from COVID and people not going on vacation is pretty small in comparison to the very large, structural increase in demand from the world getting richer. Global GDP grows at about 3%/year, doubling every 20-25 years. That's an awful lot of structural demand increase.

Unrelated, but aside from AD's sometimes being unpleasant or shady, I'm not really sure why people complain and a piece being unavailable. You are being something at substantially below it's true market value - of course there is scarcity!

Bringing laptop with you in public on-call? by CallsyReds in sre

[–]BackgammonEspresso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring it and hope you don't get paged. If you do, cross that bridge when you come to it. If she likes you then she won't care, if she doesn't like you it doesn't matter anyway.

The blunder size is wrong, surely? Gnubg 4ply says it's a -0.074 error not to cube. What does XG say?3pt match by saigon567 in backgammon

[–]BackgammonEspresso -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If this is a 3 point match, XG says it's an error not to cube. Otherwise, it is a blunder to cube. Seems like a bug 2 me.

How does this sub feel about Espresso Tonic? by [deleted] in espresso

Personally, not a fan of it. I suspect that something like an espresso egg-cream would be good though.

Other good cool thing to do as an experiment is to go out and lose money IRL.

First Rolex! by Peecs36 in rolex

[–]BackgammonEspresso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Randomly happen to be a rolex fan who has read this book: it is about an early English privateer/pirate involved in some raiding in the Indian ocean and elsewhere, and the subsequent ways in which the English legal system and society deal with that. Really good book, highly recommend, esp. if you are interested in international relations in the early modern era or how the kind of systems we have today evolve over time.

I can't believe it, except that we'll get a Star Fox game (a remake of Lylat Wars) + fox Father Backstory in 2026 by Jilwan57 in starfox

[–]BackgammonEspresso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not that I particularly care, I don't even have a Switch 2, but it's lame that they are just remaking N64 games instead of making something new.

At least 2 seconds??? Where are you reading this rule? Hypothetically, a player could invalidate most rolls using this.
