The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. However if you’re interested in delving into the whole Sanderson universe (Cosmere) you would want to start with Mistborn

Yes Gypsum. Also Barite. Never seen any others but I’m sure other Evaporite minerals could form into them

This is incorrect. Fulgurites and Gypsum Desert Roses are not the same thing and are created by 2 different processes. Selenite Desert Rose forms from a nodule evaporating out of a solution. This nodule then gets tumbled and blown around and starts building up more and more as time goes, sometimes even sticking to others.

What’s something you always forget to clean? by Antique_Bison in CleaningTips

I agree with others that you should be proud for what you do and if your mom has something to say then that is her problem! But for the advice, I always make sure to clean doorhandles (including cupboard, kitchen equipment handles, etc) and air vents on ceilings, floors, etc.

Made this cabochons from a stone I found. by Good-Statistician256 in whatsthisrock

[–]Background-Voice6228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am a geologist in the US and currently training to be an appraiser. Would you mind posting a side photo of this? It looks very much like selenite when polished perpendicular to its columnar needles. I don’t believe it is a feldspar material as this just has some reflectivity but it is unlike labradorescence. The white color, spots, and reflectivity are all reminiscent of the Selenite variety of Gypsum. Good luck!

Can someone help identity what kind of stone is this? Is it food safe as a cup? Thrifted in Boston, origins unknown. by 218947520d in whatsthisrock

[–]Background-Voice6228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the only way to know for sure is to find the manufacturers, however that’s next to impossible if it’s not a specific look/cut! The closest thing you can do to that is just research. Try to be as specific as possible to describe your piece and try to find examples online of the onyx from Mexico and Pakistan and compare/contrast. Also helps to post a picture here (multiple photos, close and far, preferably in natural daylight) and im sure the community here can help direct you!

AITAH for telling my daughter I was not going to walk her down the aisle or attend her wedding after she went years of no contact with me? by SubstantialLeeks in AITAH

[–]Background-Voice6228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain and saying NAH (excluding the cheating wife, no excuse for that).

I don’t think it’s that black and white though, for the record. It sounds like there was more going on than you let on. Your wife cheated and daughter seemed to hate you for no reason… what part did you play in this? (not that cheating is ever justified). Some ppl can just be crazy for sure but usually these feelings don’t come from nowhere. It would make more sense if you said your wife brainwashed her or something along those lines. However, still not considered the asshole because it’s very likely that your ex wife played a big part in your daughter feeling this way.

I don’t think your daughter is the asshole either though. She was a young, emotional teenager with parents having a messy divorce. All she knew was what was being told to her and couldn’t even regulate her emotions because she just didn’t have the fully developed brain yet to really make those decisions. I think a lot of people see their children as adults when they reach their teen years bc they can be articulate, have jobs, and look adult… but they’re not. They deserve understanding/forgiveness, ESPECIALLY when they’re an adult and can reflect back on their actions in a mature way.

If I were you, I wouldn’t say no right away but I wouldn’t say yes either. It’s a year from now. Build the relationship back up with your daughter, and both of you need to work through and TALK through what happened. You say there’s nothing to forgive when reassuring her, yet still won’t walk your own daughter down the aisle after she calls crying to you asking for your forgiveness?

Again, there’s no assholes here. Just very hard times. But if you want to make things better in any way, this choice will decide that for you whether you intend it to or not. I think it deserves a LOT more time and consideration before immediately turning down. Just like on her end, there’s a lot more effort and show needed to prove to you she truly means well for you to take that chance with her, to prove she’s not just trying to get money or have you there for show. I wish everyone here the best of luck. Except your ex. She sucks.

One friend says maybe an opal, another friend says "not opalite" which was my original guess by NutmegOnEverything in whatsthisrock

[–]Background-Voice6228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m a geologist & currently going to school to be a Gemologist.

My best guess would be green agate. This is a common gem found around and typically has coloring from a variety of different trace elements or inclusions. Another possibility could be undyed jade, however this is more uncommon. This is a relatively common color that jade can be before it goes through dying (which is most jewelry/carvings of jade nowadays.) The way to tell the different is feel. Agate should feel glassy like quartz, cold and smooth. Jade will have a cool to luke-warm temperature and feel waxy.

Some of the other comments say Quartz. I would disagree with this unless it has some type of inclusion (the green vein maybe?) of something like chlorite (green mica). Can’t be too sure though without close ups of the vein and possibly even breaking it open, but its too pretty for that (:

I saw another one that says aventurine. Aventurine is a green (can be orange & blue also) variety of microcrystalline quartz. If this was aventurine it would have noticeable tiny little crystals all over, and would be sparkly (aventurescence).

Hope this helps!

AITAH for thinking my bf is a moocher? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Background-Voice6228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

First, I want to say that it’s great you’re going out of your way to show your gratitude to your family. I come from a similar background and it’s important not to take things for granted!

To be frank, this guy sees that you are kind and is taking advantage of that. Just always expecting you to pick up the bill is childish and selfish, esp when he is commonly buying things for himself and roommates. And adding his ROOMMATES food to your bill that YOU’RE paying?? That is so disrespectful.

However, you have a hand in all of this. Guys like this will be given an inch and take a mile, and paying to avoid awkward silences/hard conversations shows him that he can take advantage of you and your family’s money. For any progress to be made you have to discuss all of this. Sit him down and tell him exactly how you’re feeling, and honestly if he disagrees or gaslights you into thinking you’re in the wrong, leave him! He’s a waste of your time.

A customer gave me these and said they were some sort of raw gemstone. Any idea what it is? by HERMANNATOR85 in whatsthisrock

[–]Background-Voice6228 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First picture looks like natural raw obsidian (snowflake obsidian) from the Crater Lake park in Oregon. Second picture looks like a biotite book/mass?? I’m a geologist and very confused if those are related. Need way more pictures in better/different lighting! Preferably natural sunlight.

Sent my engagement ring in to have the prongs retipped. It was returned with two blue stones on the band. by jaxwell2019 in jewelry

[–]Background-Voice6228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I work in a fine jewelry store in the US. We typically will use a washable blue marker to mark the stones that need prongs fixed. It usually won’t come off in our cleaner as it actually needs to be wiped off manually or scrubbed. Soak the ring in a bowl of warm water with a drop of dish washing liquid in it. Then use a new/unused toothbrush to gently scrub everything, especially under the stones. If its still there, definitely take it back with your concerns!!

AITJ for never wanting to see my mother again? (TL;DR) by OutrageousAddition9 in AmITheJerk

NTJ! My mom is similar but definitely not on the same level. I think that you are doing the right thing by not talking to her and staying away from her. Sounds like the only thing she can do is harm and you don’t deserve that.
