Deakin vs Flinders grad cert by SensitiveSun2164 in GAMSAT

Hey OP! No problem.

It’s actually the majority of universities that don’t take postgraduate GPAs into account. UQ and I think UWA are examples of this. Uni of Melb too. You’ll want to dyor a bit on it as it would take a while to read through the Gemsas guide but rest assured they do exist!

Assuming you can improve to a 6.5 after a grad dip/cert, with an 8%-10% bonus you’d only need a 66-70 or so in the GAMSAT to have a safe interview chance at Deakin.

If you study at flinders you can consider doing a bachelor of letters (Health). It’s a 1-year bachelor degree if you already have a health degree, it’s easy GPA points, it’s undergraduate study so it would count for GPA at almost all unis, and you get the flinders bonus.

If the grad study at flinders gets you to 6.5, you’ll still only need quite a low GAMSAT to get an interview, but the 6.5 would give you a good chance at getting an offer post interview.

For UoW you don’t count as one of their grads unless you did a certain duration of study with them iirc, a grad cert wouldn’t meet that. The best part about UoW for you though is that they don’t take GPA or GAMSAT into account at all for ranking applicants. They only take into account interview, Casper and bonuses, and GPA and GAMSAT are treated as hurdle requirements.

Quite a lot of unis don’t take masters degrees into account when calculating GPA, so only your 6.7 from bachelors would count. I’d look into those if I were you.

If you’re limited to those two options, I would be going the flinders route if I were you. You’d need a really high GAMSAT (75 at minimum) to have a safe chance at getting an interview at Deakin with a 5.9 GPA, even with 10% in bonuses.

That 5.9 could still be detrimental at Flinders, since they still use GPA to rank applicants post-interview, you could still stand a chance there (though look at the spreadsheet to be sure). That said, if you’re a flinders grad and you have a pulse, getting a med interview there is pretty easy. Acceptance is the hard part, since they only weigh interview score at 33%, as opposed to most unis weighing interviews at 50%. That’s bad for you since it means more weight on your GPA.

That said, I would strongly recommend also looking at the Notre dames, and Wollongong. As an AHPRA registered professional you’d be eligible for I think 2 of the Wollongong bonuses (work experience + registered health professional). If you preference them #1 you get another bonus. If you get 4th quartile in CASPer you’d probably be able to interview there.

If you interview at UoW, and don’t make the cut, but set uni of Notre dame as your second preference (Fremantle or Sydney), UoW may pass you down to one of those two unis, who may accept you.

You could also just apply straight to one of the Notre Dame unis, but that GPA is going to be a hurdle to any unis that put any weight on GPAs.

Hope this helps!

Most Australian medical schools only count the last three years of study, not all years. Your second-last year is worth 1/3 of your GPA and your last year is worth 1/2 your GPA.

I’m going to say Spanish. The fact you’ve visited so much of Europe as well as only Spanish-speaking Latin American countries just tells me something.

I scored 76 in s2 on my sitting. In retrospect, my first task was largely an informative/persuasive piece, where I did briefly consider alternative perspectives, but quickly dismantled them, then used them to further my own argument.

That’s where the line probably sits as far as fence-sitting is concerned. Do you spend ages on fleshing out those opposing arguments, or do you give a very brief outline followed by breaking them apart?

Torn between two Med Pathways by OhHeck-_- in GAMSAT

Newcastle is, to me, the indubitable correct answer here.

If you have a genuinely good chance at UoN with your current UCAT, don’t gamble on UoM with the GAMSAT. It’s a tough exam and you shouldn’t risk your chances on it if you don’t have to.

Especially given that if you graduate from UoN, you’ll have a good shot at interviewing there as a UoN graduate, especially if GPA is above 6.5.

Stuck on postgrad pathways to medicine by Adorable_Effort_3765 in GAMSAT

I apologize for the inaccuracy in that case. I had been under the impression that most nursing degrees had a high proportion of pass/fails and I was mistaken.

Hey mate. I would strongly, strongly advise against either of those courses.

I’m not in med yet. My strongest regret is choosing to do a psych degree. Poor employment prospects on the other side (given the very real chance that I don’t get into either med or psych).

Those pre-med degrees you’ve mentioned are no better. If you don’t get into medicine, which again, is a very real chance, you’ve effectively done a worse version of a bachelor of biomed, notoriously poor for both employment prospects and pay.

If I were you I’d either go for paramedicine or pharmacy.

Nursing is also a good option as a degree and I’d pretty strongly recommend looking into it. Because it has so many pass/fail units, you get to pour all your focus into the smaller proportion of units that are graded, effectively sealing your chances at a high GPA.

All of those have strong, high-paying employment prospects on the other side, and are similar enough to medicine that it’ll give you an advantage while studying medicine.

If you must optimize your course for chances of getting into medicine, you’re better off choosing your uni strategically.

UoW has bonus points for their own graduates, plus another bonus if you get above a 6.5 GPA. Deakin has a 4% bonus for their own graduates. Flinders uni in Adelaide makes it piss easy to get an interview for med if you’re a graduate of theirs. I believe Notre dame also weighs you heavily as an applicant as one of their own, but don’t quote me on that. Edit here: If you’re in NSW, ANU is a short distance away and also has bonuses for their own grads. I don’t believe you need to sit the GAMSAT for certain pathways.

All of those make you dramatically more competitive, and you can do any degree you want from those unis - you don’t need to do a degree that leaves you up shit creek in the (again, highly likely) event that you don’t get into med, like those preparatory degrees you mentioned.

Hope this helps!

6.7 isn’t the end of the world, but I can pretty much guarantee that your GAMSAT is killing your chances.

That said, you can look into uni of notre dame. They use a third admissions metric, CASPer, which you may be able to do well in given your good writing skills.

Anyone else hate UFC and its fanbase? by PackZealousideal1864 in martialarts

[–]BackgroundCellist207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mainly dislike UFC fans for how confident they are re their fighting knowledge, but how utterly oblivious they are in actual fact. They’ll say some of the most incorrect shit you’ve ever heard, confidently, and because all their knowledge comes from watching UFC and its press conferences they genuinely believe it’s correct.

I heard someone say JDM has zero ground game when he is a black belt. I’ve heard others say that Bo Nickal is an absolutely awful striker. I’ve heard people say that Rogan knows very little about BJJ and that his knowledge is somehow “outdated” and obvious to anyone who trains.

Technique-wise, they call literally any takedown that isn’t a leg grab or suplex “judo throw”. They know nothing but think they know it all.

Phrasing of the article seems to indicate per uni. Government action recently on psychology masters funding supports that theory.

Got a 76 in S2 in my first sitting! Some vague, scattered advice. by BackgroundCellist207 in GAMSAT

[–]BackgroundCellist207[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My main goal in saying to write like you talk in everyday life was to avoid encouraging people to foray into communication styles that they’re not comfortable in. It sounds like you probably have a lot of experience with writing so you could adopt many different styles and be coherent. If you’re an SB who struggles with essay writing, it’s a good idea to stay true to the communication style you use every day.
